[name]Long[/name]-time lurker, first-time poster with a question for the hive:
I’m expecting my second daughter this [name]July[/name], and would like some unbiased input regarding potential name choices. My first daughter is named [name]Beatrix[/name] [name]Caroline[/name] and we call her “[name]BeBe[/name].” For the new baby, we are looking for a similar mix of classic and playful, ideally a longer name with a short, fun nickname.
Currently, our favorites include: [name]Josephine[/name] ("[name]Josie[/name]") – probably the front runner, [name]Louisa[/name] ("[name]Lou[/name]"), [name]Francesca[/name] ("[name]Frankie[/name]"), [name]Juliet[/name] ("[name]Jules[/name]"), [name]Dorothy[/name] ("[name]Dottie[/name]" or “[name]Dorie[/name]”), and [name]Mirabelle[/name] ("[name]Mira[/name]"). Any thoughts/ideas for names with that type of feel?
Also, I’m a little stumped for middle names that go with [name]Josephine[/name]. Our last name is two syllables and ends in an “-el” sound. I’ve been considering [name]Josephine[/name] [name]Ivy[/name] and [name]Josephine[/name] [name]Eliza[/name] – any other ideas?
First off, [name]Beatrix[/name] [name]Caroline[/name] is lovely! I have always liked [name]Tabitha[/name] ([name]Tabby[/name]) or [name]Matilda[/name] ([name]Tildy[/name], [name]Tilly[/name], [name]Mattie[/name] etc) paired up with [name]Beatrix[/name]. From your list I like [name]Juliet[/name] and [name]Mirabelle[/name]. [name]Josephine[/name] seems like a very serious name compared to [name]Beatrix[/name], but if you love the name that doesn’t really matter anyway. [name]Josie[/name], short for [name]Josee[/name], is a common nickname where I live, so it doesn’t seem to have the same magic that [name]BeBe[/name] does. [name]Louisa[/name], [name]Francesca[/name] and [name]Dorothy[/name] are nice.
[name]Beatrix[/name] with nickname [name]BeBe[/name] is adorable, assuming it’s pronounced [name]Bee[/name]-[name]Bee[/name]. I love all of your choices for the new babe.
I think [name]Josephine[/name] is a lot more popular than [name]Beatrix[/name], otherwise they match up lovely. [name]Little[/name] [name]Josie[/name] might be miffed at some later point in her life that [name]Beatrix[/name] got a rather rare name, as compared to [name]Josephine[/name]. Something to consider. Otherwise, I really like it, both the full name and the nickname.
Franceseca nn [name]Frankie[/name] is really cute, too. I feel like [name]Mirabelle[/name] with nn [name]Mira[/name] has a different feel than [name]BeBe[/name], though? You could also consider nickname “[name]Fritzie[/name]” for [name]Francesca[/name] if you want something frillier and girlier (which might match better with [name]BeBe[/name]). That’s what we’ve been calling my little [name]Winifred[/name], and it’s nice and zesty but sweet.
[name]Dorothy[/name] nn [name]Dot[/name]/[name]Dottie[/name] is cute, too! [name]Dorothy[/name] and [name]Beatrix[/name], what a fun little sib-set!
[name]Josephine[/name] [name]Ivy[/name] “[name]Sorrel[/name]” would be really cute.
[name]Beatrix[/name] [name]Caroline[/name] is beautiful, from your list I like [name]Josephine[/name] and [name]Dorothy[/name] best. Personally I prefer [name]Dorothy[/name] over [name]Josephine[/name] but that’s just becaUse I think [name]Dottie[/name] is adorable!
Thanks so much for the great ideas! [name]Tabitha[/name]/Tib and [name]Matilda[/name]/[name]Tillie[/name] are actually two of my favorites, but unfortunately my husband was not on board. I think my biggest hesitation when it comes to [name]Josephine[/name]/[name]Josie[/name] is the popularity factor. It’s not over-popular (for me) right now – particularly where I live – but I wouldn’t want it to go much higher. [name]Fritzie[/name] is adorable though.
Welcome to the world of posting on nameberry! I too love your daughter’s name, very beautiful.
Suggestions
Audrey Claire
Louisa May nn Lulu
Penelope Jane nn of Lola
Jemima Katherine nn of Mimi
Josephine Antoinette nn Jodie, Jo Jo, Josie
and lastly Dorothea nn of Dolly, combo Dorothea Mary
I like [name]Josephine[/name] with the nickname [name]Posey[/name], vs [name]Josie[/name]. I also love [name]Louisa[/name] and you could do [name]Lulu[/name] or [name]Lucy[/name] as a nickname. I think both would work nicely with [name]Beatrix[/name]/[name]Bebe[/name].
Some middle name options might be-
[name]Josephine[/name] [name]Kate[/name]
[name]Josephine[/name] [name]Clare[/name]
[name]Josephine[/name] [name]Rosalie[/name]
[name]Josephine[/name] [name]Elise[/name]
[name]Josephine[/name] [name]Mae[/name]
[name]Josephine[/name] [name]Maeve[/name]
[name]Josephine[/name] [name]Iris[/name]
I think [name]Juliet[/name] is the best match with [name]Beatrix[/name]. I also think [name]Henrietta[/name] nn [name]Hattie[/name] or [name]Theodora[/name] nn [name]Thea[/name] or [name]Teddy[/name] would be cute.
I have a 4 year old [name]Beatrix[/name] who we call [name]Bebe[/name]! Her 2 year old sister is [name]Eloise[/name]. I’d thought about maybe using [name]Lola[/name] as a nickname but we’ve mostly just been calling her [name]Eloise[/name] or sometimes Elo (rhymes with hello) or [name]Lulu[/name].
I’m 10w with number 3 and am considering the following names if we have another girl: [name]Annabel[/name] ([name]Bella[/name]), [name]Charlotte[/name] ([name]Charlie[/name]), [name]Penelope[/name] ([name]Penny[/name] or [name]Nella[/name]), [name]Francesca[/name] ([name]Frankie[/name]).
I read your post, and when I got to [name]Josephine[/name] ([name]Josie[/name]), I swooned and thought “That’s the one!!!”. Then I read [name]Mirabelle[/name]. I have a [name]Mira[/name] (my husband calls her by pet-name [name]Mirabel[/name] occasionally) and I love this name as well. You can’t got wrong. I love the sound of both, but I like the thought of non-rhyming [name]BeBe[/name] and [name]Mira[/name] vs [name]BeBe[/name] and [name]Josie[/name] (although that is a very small and insignifcant point).
Like I said, you can’t go wrong. It’s a great list! Good luck!
I definitely say [name]Juliet[/name]! Its french for [name]July[/name], and since she’ll be born in [name]July[/name] it works so well! My youngest daughter’s middle name was suppose to be [name]Juliet[/name] because she was going to be born in [name]July[/name], but then she arrived early and was here in [name]June[/name] and it took the fun out of our chosen middle name, so we went with [name]Olivia[/name]
Maybe [name]Josephine[/name] [name]Blythe[/name]? Or [name]Josephine[/name] [name]Elise[/name]?
Other suggestions for the first name:
[name]Cordelia[/name], nn [name]Cora[/name], [name]Cory[/name] or [name]Delia[/name]
[name]Edith[/name], nn [name]Edie[/name]
[name]Adelaide[/name] or [name]Adeline[/name], nn [name]Addie[/name]
[name]Aurora[/name], nn [name]Rory[/name]
[name]Lydia[/name], nn [name]Liddie[/name]
[name]Margaret[/name], nn [name]Maggie[/name], [name]Maisie[/name] or [name]Mamie[/name]
Also, [name]Juliet[/name] is not the French word for July. July is Juillet in French.

From your list, I like [name]Josephine[/name] best, but I’d also suggest [name]Genevieve[/name] ([name]Genna[/name], [name]Vivi[/name], [name]Evie[/name], Nevie), [name]Eleanor[/name] ([name]Nora[/name], [name]Nell[/name], [name]Nella[/name], Nory, [name]Wren[/name]), and [name]Miriam[/name] ([name]Miri[/name]).
