Baby sister for Leonidas

We aren’t sure yet if we are having a girl, but we had such a horrible time trying to find a girls name last time for our surprise gender baby, we thought we’d get a head start, just in case!

We want a name that is very uncommon (shocking) and will go well with big brother’s name, [name_m]Leonidas[/name_m]. He gets his name from the famous Spartan [name_m]King[/name_m], so we feel we should find something equally as epic for our next one.

Some of my favourites last time around were [name_f]Eowyn[/name_f] (strong literary character), [name_m]Rogue[/name_m] (love the nn [name_f]Ro[/name_f]) and [name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] (love the mythical metaphor).

My husband LOVES the name [name_u]Jericho[/name_u] - and we actually were there in [name_m]Israel[/name_m] a few months ago, so now it has an even stronger meaning for him. I also love the nn [name_u]Echo[/name_u], so it’s a possibility, but I still hear mostly [name_m]Jer[/name_m], which is my ex boyfriend, so sort of weird for me.

The only name we fully agreed on before was [name_f]Willow[/name_f] - which has no special meaning to us, but I do like the nn Lo.

Middle name will be [name_f]Carolina[/name_f] (pronounced [name_f]Caroleena[/name_f]) - it was what my [name_f]MIL[/name_f] always wanted to name a girl, but she had all boys and never had the chance.

So what do you think? suggestions?

[name_f]Romilly[/name_f] [name_f]Carolina[/name_f]
[name_f]Romilda[/name_f] [name_f]Carolina[/name_f]
[name_u]Nike[/name_u] [name_f]Carolina[/name_f]
[name_f]Juno[/name_f] [name_f]Carolina[/name_f]
[name_f]Merida[/name_f]
Frigg
[name_f]Signy[/name_f]

[name_f]Callisto[/name_f]
[name_f]Amoret[/name_f]
Melusina (real name)
[name_f]Titiana[/name_f]
Belphoebe

Aslo really like [name_f]Eowyn[/name_f].

[name_m]Leonidas[/name_m] and:

[name_f]Guenevere[/name_f] ([name_f]Winnie[/name_f])
[name_f]Persephone[/name_f]
[name_f]Ophelia[/name_f]
[name_u]Echo[/name_u]

[name_f]Aurelie[/name_f]
[name_m]Kerrigan[/name_m]
[name_u]Morgan[/name_u]
Everleigh
[name_f]Emmeline[/name_f]

I really love your son’s name. It’s so strong. Of your list I like [name_f]Eowyn[/name_f] best. For me names like [name_f]Willow[/name_f] and [name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] just don’t have enough gravitas to stand up to big brother’s name.

I tried to think of other names that felt like you were reviving an ancient classic. Here is what I came up with:

[name_f]Isolde[/name_f] (literary and romantic)
[name_u]Pascale[/name_u]
[name_f]Theodora[/name_f]
[name_f]Sophronia[/name_f] (a nice alternative to the too popular sophie)
[name_f]Amandine[/name_f] (while this one doesn’t have the same historical feel it would go well with your middle name choice)
[name_f]Temperance[/name_f] (same comment as above)

I also thought the suggestion of [name_f]Guenevere[/name_f] by lerenard was perfect

Good luck!

With [name_f]Carolina[/name_f] as a middle name, I don’t think names that also end in “a” will work so nicely.

I love [name_f]Eowyn[/name_f] [name_f]Carolina[/name_f]. I think it’s a beautiful combination and works perfectly with your son’s name.

I also like:

[name_f]Xanthe[/name_f] [name_f]Carolina[/name_f]
[name_f]Salome[/name_f] [name_f]Carolina[/name_f]

What about [name_f]Sunniva[/name_f]?

[name_f]Odessa[/name_f] [name_f]Carolina[/name_f] [name_m]Rogue[/name_m]! nn [name_f]Dessa[/name_f] [name_f]Ro[/name_f] I [name_f]LOVE[/name_f] it with bb [name_m]Leonidas[/name_m]!

Yes^ totally love Oddessa with your son’s name.

[name_u]Jericho[/name_u] is an interesting choice for a girl. I’m liking it. I also think it’s a bit more intriguing than your other options, which I have seen a bit around here. The nn [name_u]Echo[/name_u] works great.

Are you also something that is obscure in reference – such as not one of the known [name_m]Roman[/name_m] or Greek gods (I immediately thought of [name_f]Persephone[/name_f] or [name_u]Artemis[/name_u], but these are more recognizable by the general public)

Boadicea – there seems to be some argument on prn, which means prn issues for this one: boo-dih-cuh, bo-dis-see-uh, or bo-uh-di-see-uh all seem legit. [name_f]Queen[/name_f] of the Iceni tribe that led an uprising against occupying [name_m]Roman[/name_m] Empire. Nn [name_u]Bo[/name_u] I find adorable.

[name_f]Io[/name_f]: Eye-O: Nymph. One of [name_m]Jupiter[/name_m]'s moons as well as the name of a moth. [name_f]Ionie[/name_f] is another option.

Ishtar – Babylonia, Assyrian goddess of fertility, love, war, etc. Nn [name_u]Isa[/name_u]

[name_f]Tulsi[/name_f] – sacred basil, hindu context

Zodia/Zodiac

[name_f]Nerissa[/name_f] / [name_f]Nerida[/name_f] – Sea nymph

[name_f]Sojourner[/name_f] – actually know someone by this name. Lots of people call her Sojo, jo, or journey.

Amanthus – used by [name_m]Fitzgerald[/name_m] in several short stories. Has the same “-anthus” suffix that greek flower names share (if you like this, might be worth exploring).

[name_f]Jonquil[/name_f] – unique flower name choice. NN Quil is very cute.

Thanks everyone - loving some of the suggestions! You’re definitely on to our name style. Keep 'em coming!

[name_f]Andromeda[/name_f]
[name_f]Athena[/name_f]
[name_u]Juniper[/name_u]
[name_f]Morgana[/name_f]
[name_f]Merida[/name_f]
[name_u]Vega[/name_u]
[name_f]Celestia[/name_f]
[name_f]Drusilla[/name_f]

I was reminded of another Greek name that I loved before - Briseis. I feel that it has some serious pronunciation issues though. It’s supposed to be Bruh-zay-us. [name_m]How[/name_m] would YOU pronounce it if you saw it?

I would pronounce Briseis - [name_f]Bree[/name_f]-say-iss.

I love Briseis, I would pronounce it [name_f]Bree[/name_f]-say-iss, as well.
