Baelfire

I came across this name while watching ‘Once Upon a Time’, and have really fallen for it. As far as etymology, all I can gather on the name is that the term bael-fire is Celtic [name]Pagan[/name] and means “bonfire”, connected to the celebration of Beltane, the fire lit and left to burn overnight to welcome the coming dawn of [name]Spring[/name].

What do you think of Baelfire, nickname [name]Bae[/name]? (though if I were ever inclined to use it myself it would no doubt go into the middle)

I’m sorry I don’t like it…its kind of weird… but I guess if its in the middle…blech

Oh no. I’m afraid to say that I think it’s horrible.

For a sci-fi novel or a supernatural show like Once Upon a Time, it’s great. For a real live human being, not a fan at all.

I think Bael is pretty usable in the front or middle, but -fire sends it to GP territory.

Ahh, I watch OUAT too. [name]Love[/name] that show.

Baelfire is a bit much for me, but I like Bael/[name]Bae[/name].

Not bad for a character but for real, no. Would be like naming your kid Balrog, which has the same root. Afraid these neo-Puritans where I live might get out the old hanging tree for a kid named Baelfire.

I [name]LOVE[/name] Once Upon A Time!
Nickname [name]Bae[/name] is adorable, but you could get that from another name. It would be a pretty awesome middle name!

Ooh, I really dislike Bael. It has such negative associations for Christians. I realize that doesn’t affect everyone, but definitely makes it unusable for me. And I think of [name]Bae[/name] as more of a feminine name

Too close to Ba’al for me. I would consider it unusable.

I nearly peed my pants laughing so hard over this. That was great. My kid just smote me with her teething key rings (not that she’s teething anymore at 15 months really) right on the cheekbone. Seems God thought it be funny to give the kid a pitcher’s arm before her second birthday. My point is I needed the laugh cause I was still a bit cranky over it. Thank you. She’s still a wench.

Mind you, I wasn’t laughing at the name, just the way that was put. [name]Michael[/name] Baelfire [name]Collins[/name] is still going to be a bit odd I think. [name]Just[/name] making up names to give an example. It would take quite a lot of balancing to pull Baelfire off. Heck it would take finesse for Bael as well. [name]Just[/name] keep that in mind and work on your combos. I’m sure if you love the name enough there will be a combo that will make it sound AWESOME.

No, I don’t like it. Sorry. It sounds like a villains name.

Hahahaha!

I have to agree with most pp’s, the ‘fire’ part makes it unusable in the fn slot for me.

no… just no

Baelfire is only appropriate for a fairy tale or World of Warcraft character.

It is from the root word you show, but you’re looking at a modern interpretation of that word. It’s been used since the Celtics as a synonym for hellfire. So you’re looking at a centuries old etymology used in a “take back” campaign. Which is appropriate for religious ceremonies, but dubious for a child’s name.

In [name]Robert[/name] [name]Jordan[/name]'s Wheel of Time books, balefire is a type of taboo sorcery that erases its recipients off the face of the earth and even the memory/effects they would have left, and [name]Jordan[/name] was pretty good about using words that conjure up a certain image. When I read it (even the first time before I knew what it was supposed to describe), I immediately thought “hellfire”.

ETA: And now I see that pp says that’s what it originally meant. Makes sense to me!

I think Baelfire is going to be tricky to match with another name, but I kind of enjoy the off beat and dark meaning behind it.

I wouldn’t do it as a first name.

Haha I love this show, and I’ve been dreaming about the name since I heard it. Unfortunately, I don’t think it can be used on a real person. Possibly the middle name spot, but then you lose the fun of calling them [name]Bae[/name] or Bael. Unless they go by their mn and then why not just use it as the first name? I think I’m holding onto this name for a pet myself.
