[name]Hi[/name] All,
I’m looking for a feminine surf inspired different girls name. My hubby really likes the name [name]Baja[/name] or [name]Baha[/name] for a girl. We have a little boy already and his name is [name]Bodhi[/name].
I really like it too but is this a name people are going to think is strange? Is it too out there? I don’t want a common name but I don’t want people to think its weird either. What are your thoughts.
I’m sorry to say but Baja, pronounced the way you said, is Spanish for short or a form of a Spanish verb meaning to bring down. I’d worry when/if your daughter took Spanish she’d get some teasing about how Baja means short and that in Spanish it would be like the teacher calling her short. (And IIRC bajo/a is is learned in the first year of taking the language.
I remember learning bajo/a in first year Spanish.
Sorry, it doesn’t look like a name to me, just a Spanish word.
It has a fun sound but don’t think it will work.
What do you think of Avila, like Avila [name]Beach[/name]? Or Zuma?
I don’t think it works.
My immediate thought is [name]Baja[/name] Mexico or the Subaru [name]Baja[/name] (really ugly crossover vehicle). Also, I think she’ll get a lot of mispronunciation throughout life with people wanting to sound out the J rather than pronounce it Ba-ha (even though that’s the correct pronunciation).
Also, believetheway is right, [name]Baja[/name] can mean short, bring down, drop, or fall… none of which are very attractive meanings. If any kids in school speak Spanish and catch onto it, it may result in some ugly nicknames.
Good luck!
I think of [name]Baja[/name] Fresh… What about [name]Behati[/name]?
[name]Baja[/name] or [name]Baha[/name] is a bit strange. I knew someone that called her daughter [name]Baja[/name], but it is pronounced [name]Baya[/name]. I bet she is called [name]Baha[/name] all the time, since spelled that way, it is a place name.
[name]Baja[/name] and Bohdi seems a bit matchy too. I think you should find something else.
I dislike [name]Baja[/name] as a name. But that aside I think [name]Bodhi[/name] and [name]Baja[/name] are too matchy for siblings. (if you had a third child would you stick to the B long-vowel theme?) I’d find it strange to meet [name]Bodhi[/name], [name]Baja[/name] and [name]Violet[/name].
[name]Hi[/name]! [name]IMO[/name] this is a bit of a meh name. It’s not the worst name, but it’s also not the best. I would pronounce it [name]Baya[/name]. She might get some teasing at school about sheep because of the first syllable, and if they do spanish at her school she will definitely be teased because it means to drop down or to fall.
“Bajita” or “shorty” is a common nickname for a little girl in Spanish. However, “[name]Baja[/name]” could refer to any number of “lower” or “lesser” things you don’t want to associate with your daughter I would think.
Unfortunately the name/word [name]Baja[/name] reminds me of a type of burrito. We have a local (Midwest) restaurant called [name]Baja[/name] [name]Sol[/name], which is a fast burrito chain restaurant, and I’ve seen other restaurants in our area advertise a “baja style” burrito…
It’s actually making me kinda hungry just thinking about it! lol
What about the name [name]Paloma[/name]? This has a nicer Spanish translation and a somewhat surfer-esque feel. I believe it means [name]Dove[/name].
I have a friend with a daughter named [name]Baya[/name]. I think [name]Baya[/name] is sweet and lovely- [name]Baja[/name], not so much.
I don’t like it…cause it sounds like laughing.
It reminds me of laughing, but I think [name]Bahia[/name] is kind of pretty
Doesn’t baja mean short in Spanish? Or it is the feminine of bajo? That might be something to consider but I guess you are from the states (which I am not) so I don’t know if it is different in Mexican dialect. I love your son’s name though.
No I don’t like as a name… Not at all
I’d go with [name]Baya[/name] or [name]Bahia[/name]
You might like [name]Azure[/name]
I either think of a mexican fast food place or a type of off-road racing
I want to like [name]Baja[/name] as a name, because it’s such a beautiful place! I think others have raised some valid concerns. Other surfy names:
I think Maui could work.
[name]Ondine[/name] or [name]Undine[/name] (mean “wave” - same root as “undulate”)
[name]Gilda[/name], [name]Greta[/name], or [name]Grete[/name], with pet-name [name]Gidget[/name]
Zamba (as in [name]Frieda[/name])
[name]Piper[/name] (as in pipeline) I like this with your son’s name.
[name]Calypso[/name] (Temptress nymph in the Odyssey, but it has such a tropical, aquamarine feeling.) Nickname could be [name]Cali[/name], as in [name]California[/name].
[name]Nerissa[/name] (another sea nymph)
[name]Laguna[/name]
[name]Nerida[/name] (means “water lily” in Aboriginal Australian)
[name]Lotus[/name]
[name]Indigo[/name]
[name]Silver[/name]
[name]Coral[/name]
Pisces
[name]Thalassa[/name] (sea-spirit in Greek mythology)
Moana ("[name]Mo[/name]-[name]AH[/name]-nah" Maori name, means “expanse of water”)
[name]Dawn[/name]
[name]Sydney[/name]
[name]Tallulah[/name] (Choctaw for “leaping water”)
