Barnaby for a first name?

Hello all, I was wondering what you thought of [name]Barnaby[/name] for a first name.

Nickname wise, I’d go for [name]Ari[/name]. He’d likely be a little brother for a Léo and an [name]Alfred[/name].

I’ve been crushing on [name]Barnaby[/name] for several weeks now, but my husband vetoed it because it sounds too much like “[name]Barney[/name]” to him. I think [name]Ari[/name] is a bit of a stretch for a nn, but it’s sure better than [name]Barney[/name] or [name]Barnes[/name]! If you love it, go for it!

I also went to high school with an [name]Ari[/name] (full name) so if you love [name]Ari[/name], there’s no reason to name him [name]Barnaby[/name] to get to [name]Ari[/name].

[name]Barnaby[/name] is one of those names that I’d like to see on someone else’s boy- it’s a great name but I wouldn’t use it myself. [name]Barnaby[/name] fits well with [name]Alfred[/name] and [name]Ari[/name] fits well with [name]Leo[/name]. Good choice

I like [name]Ari[/name], but not enough to do it on its own, I think.

Though to be honest I’m at a complete loss for boy names.

I love [name]Barnaby[/name]! It’s my second favorite first name for a boy, I think [name]Ari[/name] is a fine nickname, all the letters are basically there, but I do admit to liking [name]Barney[/name] or [name]Barnes[/name] more as nns. I think it’s great with [name]Alfred[/name], but Léo and [name]Barnaby[/name] seem pretty vastly different. Then again I see a mix of ethnicities in the name combos in your sig, so if you’re comfortable with that I think it’s fine!

Yep, I’m fine with it being a little mixy-matchy. My name tastes are broad so it pretty much just happens.

I like [name]Barnaby[/name]- it’s definitely not a favorite, but it would be nice to see on another persons baby. [name]Ari[/name] is an unexpected nickname, but I like it too.

I’ve been in love with [name]Barnaby[/name] for awhile, my only drawback is it’s similarity to [name]Barney[/name] and the potential that a kid named [name]Barnaby[/name] could be nn [name]Barney[/name]. (which would be hard for a kid to pull of in the US). If you’re open to other suggestion and it’s the nn [name]Ari[/name] you’re looking for you might also consider…

These are some I think fit with [name]Leo[/name] and [name]Alfred[/name]
[name]Barnabas[/name] (similar to [name]Barnaby[/name] but might not sound so ‘[name]Barny[/name]’ to your SO)
[name]Arthur[/name]
[name]Bartholomew[/name]
[name]Bernard[/name]
[name]Carlisle[/name]
[name]Barrett[/name]
[name]Edward[/name]

I love [name]Barnaby[/name], especially nn’ed [name]Barney[/name]. I think [name]Ari[/name] can work too.

I like [name]Barnabas[/name], [name]Arthur[/name], [name]Bernard[/name], [name]Barrett[/name] and [name]Edward[/name] from your suggestions. I am slightly attached to the end sound in [name]Barnaby[/name] over [name]Barnabas[/name], though, and I prefer [name]Edgar[/name] to [name]Edward[/name] in that family of names.

[name]Barrett[/name] I really like a bit, but the sound of the name reminds me of bare-it and I’m not sure that is OK?

I love it. It’s definitely my style of name.

I love, love, love, [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Barnaby[/name]. If I didn’t love the combination [name]Dexter[/name] [name]Barnaby[/name] so much, I’m sure [name]Barnaby[/name] would be a first name on my list. Léo, [name]Alfred[/name] and [name]Barnaby[/name] are lovely.

I like [name]Barnaby[/name], but I do quite prefer [name]Barnabas[/name]. [name]Barnaby[/name] sounds too close to [name]Barney[/name] for my taste, and I am quite unfond of that name. But I do really like the NN [name]Ari[/name], and [name]Barnaby[/name] does seem to access it easier.

I like it =)

Thanks all!

I might be a minority here, but all I see when I hear the name [name]Barnaby[/name] is the (rather wonderful) television series Midsomer Murders with [name]John[/name] Nettles in the lead as DCI [name]John[/name] [name]Barnaby[/name]. It’s not a bad association, because [name]Barnaby[/name] is a very clever man (who solves every murder in Midsomer) and you can’t help but loving [name]John[/name] Nettles, but to me, the association would be too strong.

shvibziks: I’d never heard of the show as I don’t think we have that where I live, but that sounds intriguing
