Baxter for my baby boy?

I really want a name that is quite unique but not too weird. I have a daughter called [name]Eden[/name]. I know when I tell people I like the name [name]Baxter[/name] they will try an put me off, but it is the only name that I can actually see my son being called!

OK… I know a [name]Baxter[/name].
People would comment to me “it’s a dog name”- but they didn’t ever say that to the parents.
Anyway, long story short I think it suits him and is cute, people got used to it.
We sometimes call him [name]Bax[/name].

Another suggestion: [name]Saxon[/name]

I like [name]Baxter[/name]. If that is the only name you can see your son being called then I think go for it. I would have it on my list too but my husband vetoed it.

I happen to like [name]Baxter[/name] a lot. I generally go for more classic names, but [name]Baxter[/name] really appeals to me. I’ve included it in past lists of my favorite boy names. I think it definitely meets your criteria of unique but not weird.

It does sound very last namey, which isn’t that big of a trend here in the UK. [name]Eden[/name] & [name]Baxter[/name] sound good together and if it’s the name you love the use it. I personally would prefer [name]Eden[/name] & [name]Dexter[/name] but [name]Baxter[/name] isn’t awful.

I very much like [name]Baxter[/name] and think [name]Bax[/name] is adorable. And great companion for [name]Eden[/name]. The peril of choosing an unusual name is that a lot of people won’t like or understand it and will make rude comments, but in Nameberry’s opinion, that’s worth it!

I like [name]Baxter[/name] and [name]Bax[/name] is great, but the reason I think of it as a dog name is because I had a dog named [name]Baxter[/name]. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with the name though. It’s just like [name]Saxon[/name], [name]Dexter[/name], [name]Daxter[/name], [name]Jaxon[/name] and all those other names.

I think [name]Baxter[/name] is cute, and as people have said if that’s the only name you can picture your son being named than I think you have found the one! I think you shouldn’t worry about what others say/think. I think alot of the time when people have an image in their head of a name once they meet someone with that name than it changes their opinon. Like is someone can only picture [name]Felix[/name] on a cat but than they meet a little boy named [name]Felix[/name] than that’s all they will be able to picture when they hear the name.

I’m sorry, but [name]Baxter[/name] makes me think of Bastard. [name]Bax[/name] is a cute nickname though. I liked the suggestion of [name]Saxon[/name]. But in the end, that is just my opinion and you should really go with the name you love.

[name]Baxter[/name] is all dog to me. Sorry, I can’t see this one on a child.

I agree…it is all dog to me too

If [name]Baxter[/name] is the name you love, then go for it. Unless we’re talking about Spot or Scruffy, I hardly see how a name can belong to the dogs. I’ve known many dogs named [name]Max[/name] and [name]Jack[/name], yet those aren’t considered “dog names” here on Nameberry.

Thanks everyone some really helpful advice! I also like [name]Dexter[/name] but reminds me of a cartoon called dexters laboratory! It’s really hard finding a boys names I am so stuck, my partner isn’t too keen on [name]Baxter[/name] at all and we just can’t agree. [name]Don[/name]'t know why I am stressing over it but I think about it the majority of the day lol!

I love the nickname [name]Bax[/name]. I have a friend with the middle name [name]Baxter[/name] and a very common first name - after he graduated college, he legally changed it to [name]Baxter[/name] to stand out from his otherwise very common name. So it is definitely a unique & memorable name, but if it is the only name you can see your son being called… then I think you have your answer!

I like it, actually! I know relatively few animals, so most names aren’t ruined by being a “dog” or “cat” name to me, I suppose… I have a huge thing for surnames as given names, so I like [name]Baxter[/name] a lot. [name]Eden[/name] and [name]Baxter[/name] would make a quirky, fun, distinctive sibset! [name]Baxter[/name] isn’t something I would use, despite the surnamey style of it, but I would be impressed if I came across a little [name]Baxter[/name].

Good luck!

I don’t mind last names as first, and [name]Baxter[/name] is definitly unique. If it’s the only name you can see your son being called, then I think you have an answer already. Maybe your SO will come around to it, mine is coming around to [name]Killian[/name] which at first he flat out denied. I like names that have “off” letters in them, like x. I like [name]Dexter[/name] and [name]Baxter[/name] is close to that and the nickname [name]Bax[/name] is cute. However, it is the name of the city I work in so no one in my neck of the woods would name their son that here! :stuck_out_tongue: I don’t really think “human” names could ever be taken over by the dogs, so I wouldnt worry too much about that.

I love [name]Baxter[/name], it’s on my list, too. I actually know a little [name]Baxter[/name] and his parents have been really happy that they chose that for him. [name]Bax[/name] is just too cute, I love it!

I actually really like [name]Baxter[/name]. [name]Dexter[/name] is a favourite of mine as well and I think they have similar vibes.

I happen to [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Baxter[/name], and I’m not sure why it gets so much hate, [name]Bax[/name] sounds like the popular [name]Max[/name], it’s just as cool as [name]Dexter[/name]. As far as it being a Dog’s name…I know 4 dogs named [name]Lucy[/name] but it’s still on my girls list. It was a people name first.
