Beatrice, Beatriz, or Beatrix?

Hey guys, just wanted to see the general opinion here.

For me, [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] has been on and off of my name list for very many reasons. What puts it on my list is that I love [name_m]Shakespeare[/name_m]'s Much [name_f]Ado[/name_f] About Nothing where the main character is named [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f], I also love the sound, meaning, the nickname [name_f]Bea[/name_f], and history of the name. What has taken the name off of my list is the “old ladiness” of the name and I’m just worried that the name is just too dated to actually use.

So I have gone back and forth between from having [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f], [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f], or [name_f]Beatriz[/name_f] on my list… with some periods of being so confused that I remove all forms of [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] off of my list.

What I like about [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] is the zippy x sound at the end that seems to modernize the name, PLUS I picture [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] [name_m]Potter[/name_m] and her water colorings of [name_m]Peter[/name_m] Rabbit. Though while I [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] the nickname [name_f]Bea[/name_f], I strongly dislike the nickname [name_f]Trix[/name_f] or [name_f]Trixie[/name_f] as that sounds like either a small dog’s name or a stripper’s name. So [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] has been removed from my list several times just for the [name_f]Trix[/name_f] and [name_f]Trixie[/name_f] nicknames. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you think I’m overreacting with those nicknames? I mean there isn’t a 100% guarantee of those nicknames being used, right?

[name_f]Beatriz[/name_f] has been a new addition for me, it’s the Spanish spelling of the name and is traditionally pronounced as “bee-uh-TREEZ” though I would pronounce it the same as [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f]. I think this is a more unique spelling that also modernizes the name, and also my SO is Hispanic so this spelling would also honor that heritage. Though sometimes [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] from Much [name_f]Ado[/name_f] About Nothing charms me over to the [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] spelling, and [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] still pulls at my heart strings as well… Then I get all discombobulated and torn between these 3 equally beautiful names.

I don’t know if you ever had to choose between 3 equally stunning dresses/outfits to wear to a formal event and then just being stalemated in indecision… but that is kind of what I’m feeling right now as I look at [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f], [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f], and [name_f]Beatriz[/name_f]. So what I’m asking you guys to do is help me sort out my own thoughts by offering your opinions on these three names, maybe then I can clear my head.

Thank you.

For me definitely [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f]. I feel [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] is old lady, but not in the good way. [name_f]Beatriz[/name_f] I think would be confusing if you are in an English speaking country. I wouldn’t know how to pronounce it and I would assume it was a typo for [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f]. I think [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] is a perfect balance. [name_f]Bea[/name_f] gives it that stable, historic feel and the ‘trix’ makes it a bit sassy at the same time. I don’t think people would likely call her [name_f]Trixie[/name_f] unless you initiated it as a nn.

I think [name_f]Beatriz[/name_f] is beautiful. [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] is a little too vintage for me, and I see [name_f]Trix[/name_f]/[name_f]Trixie[/name_f] coming out of [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f], which I don’t like either…I love how [name_f]Beatriz[/name_f] is fun yet still very classy

[name_f]Glad[/name_f] to see some love coming in for [name_f]Beatriz[/name_f]. Most times I tend to favor [name_f]Beatriz[/name_f] and [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] over [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] just because I feel like [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] has had it’s run, it’s just I’m such a sucker for Much [name_f]Ado[/name_f] About Nothing which makes [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] appear on my list sometimes.

Keep your opinions coming guys, I’d love to read them!

Also voting for [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f]. [name_u]Love[/name_u] [name_f]Bea[/name_f] as a nn, nd definitely think it comes across less old lady-ish than [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] (although I think that’s beautiful, too). [name_m]Don[/name_m]'t think she’d get [name_f]Trix[/name_f]/[name_f]Trixie[/name_f] if you called her [name_f]Bea[/name_f] enough.

It’s actually odd to me that people feel [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] is super dated…I think it’s vintage in a lovely, classy way. I’d probably go with [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f], though. It does modernize [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] for a baby girl in this day and age, and it has a little zip to it because of that ‘x’ ending. While I do think that [name_f]Beatriz[/name_f] is beautiful, and it’s a nice honor to your SO’s heritage, personally I wouldn’t use it if I wasn’t going to pronounce it the way it traditionally is…but that, of course, is just me.

Also, I don’t think you necessarily have to worry about [name_f]Trix[/name_f]/[name_f]Trixie[/name_f] being used. And you have to remember, if she likes the nickname and wants to be called that, there’s no helping it, haha. So I’d just let it go and call her [name_f]Bea[/name_f] and make it clear that you aren’t fond of people using the nn [name_f]Trix[/name_f]/[name_f]Trixie[/name_f]. If you stand your ground, you should be just fine! I actually find [name_f]Trixie[/name_f] charming in some ways, but I can totally see why some people aren’t fond of it. Another cute nn option is [name_f]Bee[/name_f].

You’re pronouncing it [name_f]BEE[/name_f]-ə-triks rather than just like [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f], right? Sorry, I was kind of confused on this point.

Oh yes, Beatrix will be pronounced as Bee - ə - triks. I’ll be fine with the nickname Trixie/Trix if that is what the girl prefers, I’ll just won’t be encouraging that name during the infancy stage. I also forgot the Kill Bill association with the name Beatrix (which is an association I love) - and once you finally learned the main character’s name people usually called her by Beatrix or Bea (on rare occasions)… So the possibility of avoiding the Trixie name does seem possible.

I love the nickname Bee and Beebee (used only during the infancy stage) with either name variation… Just something I’m throwing out here as I type this message.

With the name Beatriz, I think it would be hard to enforce the bee - ah - TREEZ pronunciation with non-Spanish speakers so I would just opt for the Beatrice pronunciation just to make things easier for people. My SO’s sister has a VERY unusual Spanish name and she’s always having to correct people with their pronunciation and she hates that.

I really love [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] - it’s on our list. I think it’s got more spunk than the other versions, while still retaining a bit of vintage charm.
If you called her [name_f]Bea[/name_f] for short I don’t think she’d necessarily get [name_f]Trixie[/name_f].

I’m with you - I like all forms of this name (and Much [name_f]Ado[/name_f] is a great association for the [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] spelling). That said, my vote ultimately goes to [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f]. I think it does feel a lot fresher than [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] and wouldn’t have the (possible) pronunciation issues of [name_f]Beatriz[/name_f].

I absolutely adore [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f]. I’ve never had a problem with the possible nn [name_f]Trixie[/name_f] (I think of the [name_f]Trixie[/name_f] [name_m]Belden[/name_m] books, which are a good association for me). That being said, I don’t think she would necessarily get called [name_f]Trixie[/name_f] at all!

The only one of the three I like is [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f].

Personally I love [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f], because of [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] [name_m]Potter[/name_m], and the feistiness of it, but also for the reason that everyone else seems to hate; [name_f]Trixie[/name_f] (what can I say, I like being indie :P). But I don’t think it’s a guarantee, especially if you enforce [name_f]Bea[/name_f], from the beginning.

[name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] has never really seemed old ladyish to me. I’ve always imagined reserved, and Victorian, but with quite a bit of adventure, and wit (maybe Much [name_f]Ado[/name_f] comes into it). I can actually imagine it on any age, maybe even more so on a young woman or child; definitely a lovely vintage name, and not at all dated in my opinion. Also if you’re really worried about [name_f]Trixie[/name_f], I don’t think there’s much risk of it with [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f].

[name_f]Beatriz[/name_f] I wouldn’t use personally if I was going to say it like [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f]. It’s a nice way to honour your SO’s background, but I think it would only sound really beautiful if everyone used the traditional pronunciation. But I fully understand that not being possible, I know I’d really struggle to say [name_f]Beatriz[/name_f] in a way that would do it any justice unfortunately. :frowning:

So I’d definitely say [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] or [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f]. I’d choose [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f], if you’re okay with [name_f]Trix[/name_f] or [name_f]Trixie[/name_f] possibly being used in the future.

In order of what I like; [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f], [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f], and then [name_f]Beatriz[/name_f].

What about [name_f]Beatris[/name_f]?

[name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] would get my vote. [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] just has the teasing potential of getting called beat rice (from the experience of having a friend called [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f]) while [name_f]Beatriz[/name_f] just seems like a typo or a made up version of [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f]/[name_f]Beatrix[/name_f]. But, thanks for the information because now I’ll know that [name_f]Beatriz[/name_f] is actually the Spanish variation!

I haven’t really thought much about that spelling for some odd reason. I’ll mull that spelling over for a bit.

Until then I’m glad to see all the love for [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f], I’ve really started to be more comfortable with that name now. [name_f]Do[/name_f] please keep the opinions coming will ALL forms of [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f].

I love [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] best of all, but since your future daughter would have the Hispanic heritage, I think [name_f]Beatriz[/name_f] would be a gorgeous way to honor both of her parents, keep the [name_f]Bea[/name_f] nickname and avoid the [name_f]Trix[/name_f]/[name_f]Trixie[/name_f].

[name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] is by far my favorite!

I love the [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] spelling the best and I prefer that pronunciation. The added X really modernizes the name and it seems a little more edgy and chic. My second favorite would be the traditional [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f].
Personally I would not use [name_f]Beatriz[/name_f] spelling unless the name was pronounced with the Spanish pronunciation.

I like [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f]. It seems the most classic and vintage in a good way. [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] is next, because I love [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] [name_m]Potter[/name_m], but I don’t think it is that usable now. I can’t imagine someone in my high school being called [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f], so I guess I just like the idea of it. I don’t like [name_f]Beatriz[/name_f].
