Beau and Bodhi

[name_m]Hi[/name_m]

I’m looking for some advice please…

I have an 11 year old dog called [name_u]Beau[/name_u] that I got before I met my husband. We’re now expecting our first child and the only boy name that we both like is [name_m]Bodhi[/name_m].

We love the name [name_m]Bodhi[/name_m] due to it’s meaning but also due to it having [name_f]Indian[/name_f] origin, whilst also being widely known in the western world. My husband is [name_f]Indian[/name_f] and I’m English. We don’t want a name that’s too [name_f]Indian[/name_f] or too English.

We absolutely adore our dog and he comes everywhere with us but we want to use the name [name_m]Bodhi[/name_m] because we just love the name and what it stands for.

Is a dog called [name_u]Beau[/name_u] and a baby called [name_m]Bodhi[/name_m] just too much?

I wouldn’t do it personally,but I don’t think it makes [name_m]Bodhi[/name_m] unusable

I don’t think it’s too much. The sound connection is there, and you might get some comments, but I actually think it’s cute and they’re different enough.

I really don’t think it should matter. They’re too distinct names with distinct origins that just happen to have a similar sound.

I think it actually might be worse if the dog was named [name_m]Bodhi[/name_m] first and then the boy [name_u]Beau[/name_u]. It sounds like you couldn’t think of any other sound you liked. However, since [name_u]Beau[/name_u] came first and the longer [name_m]Bodhi[/name_m] is afterwards, it looks like you thought more about it.

I dont see a problem with it at all. I would use it!

Many people name their kids with the same first few letters as their other kids, or pets for that matter…it really just depends on what you both love.

I don’t think there’s much of a problem there. If they were siblings, I might reconsider, but I personally wouldn’t worry too much about it.

No it’s actually kinda cute. Though I first misread this as a human child called beau.

I know this sounds morbid but the sad truth is that your dog will probably pass away before your son is old enough to go to school, it’s not worth not using a name that you love.

Both names are great. Personally, I wouldn’t do it, to me it does sound too similar, and it would also get confusing around the house. It’s natural for the name [name_m]Bodhi[/name_m] to get shortened to [name_u]Bo[/name_u] around the house, and there you go.

That said, if that’s what you love and are hooked, go for it!

I don’t think it’s an issue. People who have known you for a while will know that you have had [name_u]Beau[/name_u] longer than you’ve known your husband. [name_m]Bodhi[/name_m] really seems like the perfect name to use for your son. It could make kind of a cute joke story that their names are similar. Hell, I have 5 cats and 2 kids and sometimes the wrong name comes out of my mouth - at least when you do it will be close to the mark lol!

I also second what the pp said about your dog’s lifespan. He’s well loved and an important member of your family, but unfortunately four-legged friends aren’t as long-lived as us.

Use [name_m]Bodhi[/name_m]. It’s perfect.

I’m leaning on the choose [name_m]Bodhi[/name_m] side. I love the name [name_m]Bodhi[/name_m].

Thank you for all of your replies. It’s not ideal I know but we’re not ready to give up the name [name_m]Bodhi[/name_m] so I think we’re going to go for it!
