Belle Names: A Trend I Just Don't Get

What’s up berries? Before I begin with my real business here, I’d like to do some personal advertising and tell you all to reply to my new Nymbler Game!! It’s kinda complicated but I think you’ll catch on.

Now for the real business at hand. [name]Belle[/name] names. [name]Annabelle[/name]/[name]Annabel[/name], [name]Mirabelle[/name]/[name]Mirabel[/name], [name]Arabella[/name], etc.

I just don’t get what makes them so appealing. To me, they just seem too girly and fluffy. If I was a [name]Mirabel[/name] who wanted to be a tomboy, I think it would be pretty hard. I especially don’t get [name]Anabel[/name] (spelled that way) and [name]Arabella[/name]. I’m not sure why, but the names just don’t appeal to me.

Not to offend anyone.

Berries, can you:

A. (If you like [name]Belle[/name] Names) Tell me why you like them so much.

B. (If you don’t like [name]Belle[/name] Names) Back me up here! Am I the only one?

See Ya,
[name]Genevieve[/name]!

To be a tomboy with a [name]Belle[/name] name is really not that hard.
There are plenty of nickname options:
[name]Mirabelle[/name] - [name]Mira[/name]. [name]Em[/name]. [name]Ray[/name]. [name]Abby[/name].
[name]Annabelle[/name] - [name]Anna[/name], [name]Ann[/name], [name]Annie[/name], [name]Abby[/name].
[name]Arabella[/name] - [name]Ari[/name], [name]Abby[/name], [name]Ray[/name].

I’m not necessarily a fan of “belle” name, but I do like some of them, [name]Isabel[/name] is on my middle name list.

Usually I’m pretty lukewarm on the Belles. The only one I might consider using is [name]Bellamy[/name]- most of the others I think are nice enough, but not names I’d choose. I agree on the tomboy thing- the “bel” part makes those names a little bit hyperfeminine. However, I think a lot of [name]Belle[/name] names have lots of nickname potential. [name]Annabel[/name], [name]Arabella[/name], [name]Isabella[/name], and [name]Mirabella[/name] could be [name]Annie[/name], [name]Ari[/name], [name]Izzy[/name], and [name]Miri[/name] if they wanted, and those names are perfectly suitable for tomboys. “[name]Belle[/name]” itself doesn’t seem that super feminine to me, especially if spelled [name]Bel[/name].

Side note, [name]Anabel[/name] is the Spanish spelling of [name]Annabel/name. Generally, every letter is pronounced in Spanish and double letters make different sounds from single letters, so [name]Annabelle[/name] would be pronounced something like ah-na-na-bay-yay, which is obviously a little ridiculous sounding.

I like [name]Isabel[/name] a lot as a middle name…maybe it’s because it’s one of my best friends’ names. Thanks for your input!

I really don’t like [name]Belle[/name]-names. In general, I tend to dislike the B sound to begin with, paired with the popularity of [name]Belle[/name]-names, they just don’t do it for me. I did love [name]Arabella[/name] for a while about 5 years ago, but not anymore.
I think [name]Mirabel[/name] is okay but that’s about it. [name]Isobel[/name] does appeal to me and I can appreciate it, but not enough to ever consider it myself.
Ooh! I do like [name]Amabel[/name] as a nod to my late grandfather, [name]Amos[/name].
So, clearly there are exceptions, but in general, -belle and -bella are not my cup of tea.

I don’t get the trend, I think it is just some people wanting to be unique because [name]Isabel[/name] and [name]Isabella[/name] are too common now so they choose the names similar to it. Of course not everyone uses them for that reason. I think they sound pretty, but I just think it is a trend that will die down soon.

I’m not a huge belle-name-lover, but I can see their appeal. They’re feminine and frufru, but there’s still the semi-sensible [name]Belle[/name] as a nickname. They do sound pretty, but it is a trend, and one that’s bound to die down soon.

Not the only one and I’m not a tomboy. But names ending in “belle” are not my taste.

I like feminine names but I was NEVER a fan of the Grandma Grandpa, Musty Mothball Name craze. I don’t get it. And to me, these “[name]Belle[/name]” names grew out of that movement. And perhaps a Disney movie.

I like the simple [name]Belle[/name] and [name]Bella[/name], both are not too frilly. They have a pretty sound but there are other names I love so much more.

I feel exactly the same about ‘belle’ names. I’m not a huge fan of them but not all of them are bad such as [name]Isobel[/name] which I absolutley adore.

I’m not a huge fan of them either, a lot of them seem overly frilly to me and it’s totally not my taste. That combined with their popularity and the fact that every single one seems to go by the [name]Bella[/name] nickname, and every other [name]Isabel[/name]/[name]Annabel[/name] I knew before Twilight became popular was an [name]Izzy[/name] or an [name]Annie[/name], nicknames which I vastly prefer to [name]Bella[/name]. If I had to use a [name]Belle[/name] name I’d use the most consice spelling possible - [name]Annabel[/name], [name]Isabel[/name], [name]Mirabel[/name] rather than the -belle/bella ending. I did used to like [name]Isabel[/name] nn [name]Izzy[/name] but would now never use it because of popularity and the likelihood of her being called [name]Belle[/name]/[name]Bella[/name], which I hate.

I think they’re way too frilly. I do think [name]Mirabel[/name] is slightly better than the rest, but I wouldn’t actually use it.

I don’t like them either. They sound way too precious. I’ve never encounter anyone named [name]Mirabelle[/name] or [name]Arabelle[/name], but I’ve met two kids called [name]Annabelle[/name]. I think [name]Anna[/name] or [name]Ann/name would have sufficed. I know the kid could tell people to drop the “belle” and call her [name]Anna[/name], [name]Mira[/name], etc., but there’s always the unpleasantness of hating your (and I know I would hate to be called any of the “belle” names) while being forced to hear it every time attendance is called, not to mention the hassle of having to reiterate that you prefer it when people [name]DON[/name]'T use your full name. And I have no idea what the short form of [name]Arabelle[/name] would be (aside from belle, and that’s the part that makes me dislike these names). I guess [name]Arabelle[/name] could always choose to go by her middle name…

I don’t like the bell/bella/belle names, except for [name]Isobel[/name] and [name]Bellamy[/name]. The others are way too frilly,I picture spoiled little girls with pink princess dresses and tiaras.

TOTALLY agree. My real name is [name]Eva[/name], but I always go by [name]Genevieve[/name] (sort of a reverse nickname) and I hate explaining it…augh.

I agree! I’m really over the [name]Belle[/name]/[name]Bella[/name] trend. I feel like every little girl has a name with “bella” tacked onto it. It’s not creative or cute anymore [name]IMO[/name] (or, it’s just TOO cutesy). The only one of these names I like is [name]Annabel[/name] (ok, and kinda [name]Isabel[/name]) but not enough to use either of them. I also prefer the less “frilly” spellings (the ones I mentioned vs. [name]Annabelle[/name] and [name]Isabelle[/name]).

I tend to lean towards names that are distinctly feminine, but not super girly girl sounding. That’s just my style, so maybe that’s why I don’t like this trend?

B. I’m with you. I don’t get the trend. I don’t mean to offend anyone but this trend was cute like 6 or 7 years ago. It’s so over. I wouldn’t have even considered the [name]Isabelle[/name]/[name]Annabelle[/name]/[name]Bella[/name] names even then, because I recognized the trend when it originally started, but now with Twilight they are SUPER common and trendy to the point of being annoying and exhausting to remember.

I assume the original appeal was that they were whimsical and somewhat unheard of among this generation… a backlash against the 90’s gender-ambiguous girls’ names such as [name]Taylor[/name], [name]Madison[/name], [name]Mckenzie[/name], [name]Jordan[/name], [name]Morgan[/name], etc.
