Berry

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] berries, ha, get it? I had asked about this a while ago I believe, maybe in the last 6 months but maybe before then. Anyway, I’m planning on naming one of my children after my Bubbe, my grandmother. Her name is [name_f]Bernice[/name_f] but she goes by [name_f]Betty[/name_f]. I had planned on using the boy’s name [name_m]Ben[/name_m]-[name_u]Ami[/name_u] to honor her. (Our tradition is first initial honor names). [name_m]Ben[/name_m]-[name_u]Ami[/name_u] is pronounced like BEN ah-MEE. It is sitting at the top of my boys list. Here’s the problem:

I also like the name [name_f]Berenice[/name_f] nn [name_u]Berry[/name_u] and just [name_u]Berry[/name_u] too. [name_f]Berenice[/name_f] is I think the original [name_f]Bernice[/name_f]? It’s pronounced like [name_m]Bear[/name_m]-rah-NEE-see. It’s clunky but I love it and the nn [name_u]Berry[/name_u] is so cute to me. I’d consider [name_u]Berry[/name_u] by itself too.

So here are my questions:

  1. Are [name_m]Ben[/name_m]-[name_u]Ami[/name_u] and [name_f]Berenice[/name_f] too close for siblings? (I’m leaning towards yes)
  2. What are your thoughts on [name_u]Berry[/name_u] and [name_f]Berenice[/name_f]? Usable?
  3. What are some vintage first or middle names that could spice up [name_f]Berenice[/name_f]? [name_u]Berry[/name_u]?

1.) I think it would be confusing to have them that close together, but if they’re family names and special to you, that’s more important!

2.) [name_f]Bernice[/name_f] would probably be easier. In my opinion, [name_f]Berenice[/name_f] would constantly be misspelled and never be pronounced correctly. I think [name_f]Bernice[/name_f] just flows better and would be more wearable in real life. Plus, this way, if [name_u]Berry[/name_u] became a little too cutesy as she got older, [name_f]Bernice[/name_f] would be a lot easier to have. It might become a little awkward for her to introduce herself as [name_u]Berry[/name_u] when she’s in high school or applying for a job, and she might get tired of having to correct people on the pronunciation of [name_f]Berenice[/name_f]. But maybe not, and if that’s what you want, use it!

3.) Maybe [name_f]Benedetta[/name_f]? It’s like [name_m]Ben[/name_m]-[name_u]Ami[/name_u], but maybe it’s a little too long. Or [name_f]Bernadette[/name_f], nn [name_f]Addie[/name_f]? I just think [name_u]Berry[/name_u] would be hard when she gets older.

  1. I don’t think [name_m]Ben[/name_m]-[name_u]Ami[/name_u] and [name_f]Berenice[/name_f] are impossible for siblings, but I wouldn’t recommend it.
  2. In my opinion [name_u]Berry[/name_u] is usable as a nickname for family and friends, but less so for other practices. I think [name_f]Berenice[/name_f] is very usable, although spelling and pronouncation issues may arrise.
  3. [name_f]Berenice[/name_f] [name_f]Ariane[/name_f], [name_f]Berenice[/name_f] [name_f]Ines[/name_f], [name_f]Berenice[/name_f] [name_f]Josephine[/name_f], [name_f]Berenice[/name_f] [name_f]Sophie[/name_f], [name_f]Berenice[/name_f] [name_f]Tess[/name_f]

Thank you!

While I do find [name_f]Berenice[/name_f] appealing I think the traditional greek pronunciation isn’t as intuitive with this name as some. I think many would default to pronouncing it like [name_u]French[/name_u], more closely to [name_f]Bernice[/name_f] (like Behr-eh-neece.) And I agree it may be too much or too matchy with [name_m]Ben[/name_m]-[name_u]Ami[/name_u].
I also think that because it is just an older form of [name_f]Bernice[/name_f] it kind of moves away from your naming traditions- in that you’d be doing more than simply using an initial letter as an honor.

[name_u]Berry[/name_u] is a darling nickname, but I think you may need to keep looking for something that isn’t [name_f]Berenice[/name_f].

  1. Are [name_m]Ben[/name_m]-[name_u]Ami[/name_u] and [name_f]Berenice[/name_f] too close for siblings?

I dont think they’re unusably close but i probably wouldn’t do it
