We are STILL trying to agree on a girl name. I like unique names and my DH likes classic family names. My grandma’s name is [name]Bertha[/name]. She was the most beautiful woman, very kind, and always laughing and joking. I was very close with her as a young child and would love to name my daughter after her. The only problem is her name was [name]BERTHA[/name]. I don’t think I can do that to a child. Sure I can use it as a middle name but that is even hard to find something that flows. Any suggestions?
Thank you!
What about [name]Bertille[/name]? Its a french version of [name]Bertha[/name] and is pretty sweet and gentle sounding to me plus its pretty easy to prn!
[name]Audio[/name] link: Pronunciations for bertille
There’s also Bertilie which has the “tee lee” ending berries like in Ottilie
Have you thought about a variation on [name]Bertha[/name]? [name]Bettina[/name], [name]Bertille[/name], [name]Berit[/name], and [name]Bird[/name]/[name]Birdie[/name] are all much more palatable.
Some more unique/classic suggestions:

[name]Emmeline[/name] [name]Bertha[/name]
[name]Ottilie[/name] [name]Bertha[/name]
[name]Felicity[/name] [name]Bertha[/name]
The first name that came to mind was [name]Caroline[/name] [name]Bertha[/name] or [name]Emmeline[/name] [name]Bertha[/name]. What are some names you and your husband like to help us get a better feel for your style?
I love [name]Caroline[/name]! and [name]Winifred[/name] [name]Bertha[/name] I love the thought of [name]Winnie[/name] but [name]Winifred[/name] [name]Bertha[/name] scares me that she may be teased but I will have to keep that one in mind.
MY list:
[name]Hazel[/name] (my favorite favorite but he says it is a color not a name)
[name]Violet[/name]
[name]Lux[/name]
[name]Emelina[/name]
[name]Elaina[/name]
[name]Marilyn[/name]
[name]Finley[/name]
[name]Etta[/name]
[name]Dotty[/name] (He does like this)
[name]Monroe[/name]
[name]Presley[/name]
They are kind of all over the board as far as style of name but that is what I have on my list. He doesn’t really like any of them. the only names he has taken interest in are [name]Mary[/name] (his grandma) and [name]Dotty[/name].
Also I have a daughter from a previous relationship named Kameryn but am not interested in naming my kids with any kind of trend.
I hope that helps!
For first names I’d say stick with 2-3 syllables, not ending in -a, with the emphasis on the first syllable. They sound way better with [name]Bertha[/name]. From your list I like:
[name]Hazel[/name]
[name]Violet[/name]
[name]Marilyn[/name]
[name]Finley[/name]
Since [name]Bertha[/name] means “bright” what about another name with the same meaning?
[name]Alina[/name]
[name]Alberta[/name]
[name]Claire[/name]
[name]Clara[/name]
[name]Clarabelle[/name]
[name]Clarissa[/name]
[name]Eleanor[/name]
Elecktra
[name]Eileen[/name]
[name]Eleanora[/name]
[name]Helen[/name]
[name]Helena[/name]
[name]Ellen[/name]
[name]Leonora[/name]
[name]Marya[/name]
[name]Niamh[/name]
[name]Roberta[/name]
[name]Robin[/name]
[name]Senna[/name]
[name]Shirley[/name]
[name]Sorcha[/name]
Some more suggestions based on your list:
[name]Charlotte[/name] [name]Bertha[/name]
[name]Sidney[/name] [name]Bertha[/name]
[name]Constance[/name] [name]Bertha[/name]
[name]Kennedy[/name] [name]Bertha[/name]
[name]Adeline[/name] [name]Bertha[/name]
[name]Elsie[/name] [name]Bertha[/name]
[name]Ashton[/name] [name]Bertha[/name]
[name]Marley[/name] [name]Bertha[/name]
I may be completely off my rocker, but I actually kind of like [name]Bertha[/name]. Couldn’t it be one of those vintage names that’s pulled down from the attic and dusted off, like [name]Edith[/name] or [name]Ethel[/name]?
Big bertha??? That is all I can think…one of the most ugly names I have ever heard…blech
I [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Senna[/name] Super cute and different but not too unique or forced. @lyricmom I also love [name]Bertha[/name] and would love to use it as a first name (my husband would let me) but I am so scared that she will be teased. Also [name]Edith[/name] and [name]Ethel[/name]! [name]LOVE[/name] both! But I am a sucker for anything vintage. Thoughts on [name]Bertie[/name] as a nickname?

I really would hesitate on [name]Bertha[/name] as a first name. I too have a wonderful grandmother with a rather dated and unattractive name and as much as I love her, I think it’s important to focus on the child. I really do think [name]Bertha[/name] could get your daughter a lot of teasing. To me, it’s in a fairly small group of names that will probably never recover - [name]Bertha[/name], [name]Agnes[/name], [name]Mildred[/name], [name]Gertrude[/name].
I think [name]Bettina[/name] is a good option to still honor [name]Bertha[/name], and there’s been a lot of good suggestions here. If your husband likes old fashioned names, maybe consider [name]Elizabeth[/name] nn [name]Betty[/name]? [name]Elizabeth[/name] gives you a classic feel with a lot of options.
I really like the suggestion of [name]Elizabeth[/name] nn [name]Bertie[/name]
[name]Berta[/name] or [name]Roberta[/name] nn [name]Bertie[/name]
[name]Bertha[/name] nn [name]Betty[/name] or Birdy is actually rather sweet.
I think everyone has mentioned ideas that I had: [name]Berta[/name] with the nickname [name]Bertie[/name], [name]Bettina[/name], and [name]Betty[/name] are all really good ideas.
I was thinking too maybe [name]Beth[/name] or [name]Martha[/name] could work - ex. [name]Elizabeth[/name] [name]Martha[/name], nn [name]Beth[/name] (or vice versa). Or [name]Bernadette[/name] [name]Martha[/name]? They have some of the same sounds but might be more well received?
Is [name]Elisabetta[/name] nn [name]Betta[/name] too much of a stretch? Or [name]Bethany[/name]? [name]Bernetta[/name]?
