Inspired by the other recent post asking about honor names for [name_f]Melissa[/name_f]… what are your favorite [name_u]Mel[/name_u] names?
I’ve already considered [name_f]Melanie[/name_f], [name_f]Melissa[/name_f], [name_f]Melinda[/name_f], [name_f]Melisande[/name_f], and [name_u]Carmel[/name_u]. I’m intrigued by [name_f]Meli[/name_f], [name_f]Melia[/name_f], and just plain [name_u]Mel[/name_u], but I would love a name with the honeybee meaning, not the “black, dark” meaning or the “work” meaning like from [name_f]Amelia[/name_f].
[name_f]Melody[/name_f]
[name_f]Carmelita[/name_f] or [name_f]Melita[/name_f]
[name_f]Melusine[/name_f]
[name_f]Melba[/name_f]
[name_f]Rosamel[/name_f] (rose and honey)
[name_f]Melibelle[/name_f] (variant of [name_f]Melina[/name_f])
[name_f]Melora[/name_f] (this one means golden apple as opposed to honey or honeybee, but a really pretty choice! Still golden and sweet.)
[name_f]Milena[/name_f] would be mine, even though it’s a bit of a stretch to get to [name_u]Mel[/name_u]. It means love, warmth, grace, which I think is gorgeous.
But I also like [name_f]Amelia[/name_f], I agree the meaning isn’t ideal, but it’s a beautiful name and most people don’t think about what their name means, I couldn’t tell you what mine means!
I was thinking about Melangell just yesterday - it means “yellow-golden”, which is quite bright and positive. There’s also Melyonen, which is Cornish for “violet”.
I also like the Occitan Melio ([name_u]MEL[/name_u]-ee-oo), but that is probably a derivative of [name_f]Emily[/name_f], the meaning of which doesn’t score top marks for positivity.
I like [name_f]Melodia[/name_f] the best. It is the first “[name_u]Mel[/name_u]” name that comes to mind and I have a thing for ia endings in girls names!
If you are wanting an honour name for [name_f]Melissa[/name_f] (which means honeybee) what about [name_f]Deborah[/name_f]. It is a Hebrew name with the same meaning.
[name_f]Melusine[/name_f] is the only [name_u]Mel[/name_u]- name on my own long list. I also quite like [name_f]Melitta[/name_f], Meliora (mee-lee-or-uh, so sweet), [name_f]Melia[/name_f] & [name_f]Melantha[/name_f] (‘honey-flower’?). Also, Miela (‘honey-sweet’) & [name_f]Sisel[/name_f] means ‘sweet’.
There is also [name_m]Jarah[/name_m] if you wanted to honor Melissa with a boy. Or Jarrah for a girl or boy, but is perhaps a more Australian association due to the Jarrah tree, indigenous to Western Australia and the honey it produces.
There’s also the pretty Welsh Meleri - I knew I was forgetting one! It’s linked to [name_f]Eleri[/name_f], the meaning of which is unfortunately unclear (although “great earth” is a more convincing theory than “greatly bitter”).
