[name_m]Cole[/name_m] feels very dated to me. [name_u]Nick[/name_u] is a classic, and [name_u]Nico[/name_u] is fresh.

I like [name_m]Cole[/name_m]. [name_u]Nick[/name_u] has… less pleasant connotations to me. [name_m]Nicholas[/name_m] as a whole is good too. [name_u]Nico[/name_u] is also nice

[name_m]Nicholas[/name_m] is my all-time favorite boys’ name, and part of the reason I love it is because I think [name_u]Nick[/name_u] is the best nickname ever. Never could get my husband on board with [name_m]Nicholas[/name_m], but at least we have a [name_f]Veronica[/name_f], who I sometimes call [name_u]Nic[/name_u] or [name_u]Nico[/name_u] (which is also really cool).

[name_m]Colin[/name_m] is another [name_m]Nicholas[/name_m] nickname you might like.

[name_u]Nick[/name_u] is a definite classic, one of the original nicknames. [name_m]Cole[/name_m] does seem dated to me, but it’s certainly a creative nickname that I’d recommend. [name_m]How[/name_m] about Nio (pronounced Nee-o)?

Agree, [name_u]Nico[/name_u] is great and I much prefer it to [name_m]Cole[/name_m] or [name_u]Nick[/name_u].

[name_m]Cole[/name_m] is my favorite nn for [name_m]Nicholas[/name_m]. Maybe it’s just my social circles, but I don’t find [name_m]Cole[/name_m] dated at all (I actually only know Coles under 20, and have a hard time imagining [name_m]Cole[/name_m] on a middle aged and older person). I also wouldn’t say [name_u]Nick[/name_u] is dated, but I only know Nicks who are older than 20.

Thank you all for the suggestions! I’m not a huge fan of [name_u]Nico[/name_u] due to personal experiences but I do see the appeal.

[name_m]Cole[/name_m]'s my favourite from your options. I suppose [name_m]Niles[/name_m], [name_f]Nix[/name_f] or [name_m]Hal[/name_m] could work, too?

I’ll second @katinka’s suggestion of [name_m]Kolya[/name_m], it’s my favorite nickname for [name_m]Nicholas[/name_m]!

My favorite [name_m]Nicholas[/name_m] name has always been [name_u]Nico[/name_u], although [name_m]Cole[/name_m] and [name_u]Nick[/name_u] are both solid options too. I’d say that [name_m]Cole[/name_m] would be my favorite of the ones you listed, and I think that it works well on all ages. Plus, if at some point he wanted to switch over to [name_u]Nick[/name_u] when he got older he totally could, people can totally change nicknames as they age.
