Beyond Rosemary & Rowan – Herbal/Botanical Names?

I’m looking for some new ideas to add to my nature names list. Given my aromatherapy and herbal medicine studies, I’m really drawn to herbal names, especially the Latin ones, such as Myristica (nutmeg), Piperita (peppermint), and Vivendel (honeysuckle) for girls or Siderion (vervain) and Trillium (nightshade) for boys. In addition to the scientific names for various plants, I’m also interested in unusual botanical word names like Vetiver, Belladonna, Neroli, and Nightshade.

What I don’t want:
[name]Lily[/name], [name]Rose[/name], and [name]Violet[/name] – flower names that are quite common
[name]Rowan[/name], [name]Hazel[/name], and [name]Willow[/name] – don’t get me wrong, I love tree names, but I’m looking for fresh new ideas, not the typical suggestions that can be found on every nature name thread.

Can’t wait to hear your woodsy, earthy, flowery choices!

Other faves- Coriander, Primevere, [name]Columbine[/name], [name]Yasmine[/name]/Jessamin, Aloe, [name]Peony[/name], Acanthus, [name]Ayla[/name], Ronce, [name]Cypress[/name], Menthe, [name]Crimson[/name], Fraxinelle, Dandelion, Lierre, [name]Lucerne[/name], Argentine, Cardere, [name]Anemone[/name], [name]Sorrel[/name]

I have a looong list of offbeat nature names here:

Some of the more unusual ones I like are

Larkspur
Tuberose
Zephyranth
Speedwell
Lunaire/Lunaria
[name]Clematis[/name]
Rhodanthe
[name]Gen[/name]évrier
[name]Artemisia[/name]
Ophrys
[name]Narcisse[/name]/[name]Narcissus[/name]

[name]Flora[/name], [name]Linnea[/name], [name]Acacia[/name],[name]Rosalia[/name], those are all I could think of

ottilie – LOVING Fiol, Myske, Selje, [name]Lilium[/name], Oleander and of course Vivendel! Nøkkerose, Ryllik, Sikori, Soleie, Tindved (love this one for a boy), Corylus, Lavendula and [name]Salvia[/name] are also striking my fancy!

niteowl – wow so many great suggestions! I love almost all of these boys’ names! Let’s see…[name]Suren[/name], [name]Acantha[/name], [name]Forsythia[/name], [name]Saffron[/name], [name]Lucerne[/name], [name]Briar[/name], [name]Fauna[/name], [name]Wisteria[/name], and Lierre are my favorites from the girls. Also liking Celyn, [name]Freesia[/name] and [name]Clary[/name]. [name]Clove[/name] and [name]Rue[/name] are darling, but way too associated with Hunger Games right now. From the boys, Bracken, [name]Hawthorne[/name], and [name]Valerian[/name] have been favorites for a long time! Some new loves: Bramble, Burdock, [name]Balsam[/name], Hemlock, and Hickory. I like [name]Cypress[/name] and [name]Cedar[/name] but they are becoming surprisingly common nature names.

teacherma – how darling is Elitza? Such a lovely nature-y alternative to [name]Elizabeth[/name] and variants. Alstroemeria is a mouthful, but a lovely mouthful. Evergreen, Silene, Phlox, and [name]Yarrow[/name] are great, and Corydalis and Diascia are brand new to me. Thanks for the suggestions!

notcinnamon – [name]Fleur[/name] is slowly growing on me…I like [name]Wisteria[/name] [name]Fleur[/name], but it’s just so much frilly floral. Coriander, Aloe, Menthe, Dandelion and [name]Anemone[/name] are great hiding-in-plain-sight choices! Thank you for suggesting them!

augusta_lee – thank you! Totally going to check these out when I get off work.

nat108 – I love Larkspur, Zephyranth (!!), Lunaire, and Ophrys! [name]Gen[/name]évrier is a gorgeous alternative to [name]Genevieve[/name]

Nemorosa and Purissima!

Throw as many as you like, my Otter! It’s like confetti ^-^

Duskstarr is savagely beautiful! I’m in love. Sildre and Solrose (swoon) are also favorites. And how cute is fairy flax?? [name]Just[/name] the fact that there is a plant in this world so named makes me smile. Nemorosa I love, magical, dark, and delicious. But there’s the whole ex named [name]Nemo[/name] thing that makes this one a definite no for me.

Aargh, I knew that! Banging my head in the table… I just remembered you loved the name [name]Nemo[/name] and couldn’t use it. [name]Silly[/name] me! Isn’t [name]Fairy[/name] flax adorable? http://data.live.wt.precedenthost.co.uk/sites/data.live.wt.precedenthost.co.uk/files/imagecache/reserve_web_large/sites/data.live.wt.precedenthost.co.uk/files/fairy-flax-00001%20northeastwildlife.jpg

[name]Cassia[/name] and Tamarisk- [name]Cassia[/name] is a variety of shrub, Tamarisk a flower.

Sheesh - If you are still looking two months later. I thought of [name]Saffron[/name] and I had to suggest it.
(I’m sure you know that in [name]Morocco[/name] it’s frequently used as a pain killer for minor aches and pains as well as other things.)

Otter - fun how at the end of [name]January[/name] you were considering Rosebay and you ended up with the closely related [name]Rosalind[/name]. love it.

I love herb/plant names! I have a cat named [name]Pepper[/name] (girl) and we had goats named Blackberry, Nutmeg and Coriander (girl, girl, and boy).

I have a soft spot for [name]Acacia[/name] and [name]Juniper[/name].

First thing I thought of was [name]Sage[/name]. Then [name]Saffron[/name]. Corriander.

Boy possibilities:
[name]Elder[/name]
[name]Ash[/name]/[name]Ashby[/name]

Eucalyptus (Not sure how I feel about this one either… possible nn [name]Cali[/name], [name]Callie[/name], [name]Caly[/name])

Side note, I don’tnkow where you (whoever is looking for these names) are from, but if you’re from the States, I wouldn’t use [name]Columbine[/name] (for obvious reasons) and I’d think twice about [name]Salvia[/name] as well. There are legal debates going on about it… People use it to get high…

Best of luck!
