Billy. Is it usable?

We may have come to a compromise on a name for a son. I wanted [name]William[/name] after my dad, but DH wasn’t too keen until he realized he could call him [name]Billy[/name]. He wouldn’t go for [name]Will[/name] or [name]Liam[/name], but he loves [name]Billy[/name]. Does it fall into the group “please don’t use such a dated nn” or “ahead-of-the-curve hip”?

Thanks, berries!

I think [name]Billy[/name] is sweet. It will seem like a cool throw back if your edgey looking hip parents but I don’t think it feels dated if you’re not. It’s nicer than [name]Will[/name] or [name]Liam[/name] imo.

Well my dad went by [name]Billy[/name] as a kid and [name]Bill[/name] as an adult. I see nothing wrong with it.

I think it’s definitely usable! And pretty cute actually! And since his formal name will be [name]William[/name], he can change his nn later if he doesn’t like [name]Billy[/name]. But I think [name]Billy[/name] is nice.

Nothing wrong with [name]Billy[/name] at all. I don’t find it dated and with [name]William[/name] as a formal name he can go by what he wants as an adult. I think some minor British celeb named their son [name]William[/name] nn [name]Billy[/name] a couple of years ago actually, and I think it’s far cuter on a baby than [name]Liam[/name] or [name]Will[/name].

Definitely useable. Really cute! [name]Liam[/name] and [name]Will[/name] are the ones that are overused right now(I do like them though).

It’s such a classic nickname that it’s totally usable.

My fiance’s name is William, he goes by Bill. Even as a baby, his parents called him Bill, his mom couldn’t stand Billy as a nickname. I thought it was kind of funny, I couldn’t imagine calling a baby Bill. Billy definitely works for a young child, and if he wants to continue to go by Billy when he’s older, it could work too. My friend’s husband still goes by Andy, and his brothers all go by their short names (Philly, Stevie and Willie).

I dated a guy named [name]William[/name] who went by [name]Bill[/name]/[name]Billy[/name]. There is something very swag about going by the original nn instead of [name]Will[/name] or [name]Liam[/name]. (Not that there is anything wrong with them but they always make me think people were just too lazy to pronounce the whole name instead of using a legit nn).

I think [name]Billy[/name] for a boy who can age into [name]Bill[/name] is great. (And by age into I’m thinking around the time you are ready to become a grandparent. ;)).

PS: [name]Little[/name] boys tend to get a kick being named “after” or share names with famous outlaws. [name]How[/name] can it get any better than the Western icon [name]Billy[/name] the Kid?

I’m in the minority, but it sounds dated and childish to me. It could be that my grandpa’s name is [name]Bill[/name], but I know a very attractive [name]Billy[/name] and it just does not suit him at all. I feel like I’m making fun of him every time I say his name because it just doesn’t feel like it should be his real name. I’m glad everyone else likes it. I never realized it was coming back. Hopefully it will be one of those names that grows on me as it becomes more common.

I think [name]Billy[/name] is adorable.

You guys have totally made my day! I was expecting an overwhelming negative response. I wasn’t completely sold on [name]William[/name] nn [name]Billy[/name], but now I think I love it! To the pp who mentioned a baby being called [name]Bill[/name], I’ve had those same thoughts about how my grandma could possibly call a baby (my dad) [name]Bill[/name]. Haha. I hope DH doesn’t change his mind!

I think it’s totally usable! [name]Billy[/name] is a great nn
