Blythe?

Personally, I don’t like this name, I just don’t understand the appeal and can’t imagine it on a little girl. But, why do you like it?

it’s an odd sound to some but i don’t mind it. And the meaning of ‘happy’ is beautiful. It’s nice in the middle spot!

I find the look of it a little unappealing, but I quite like the sound and the meaning!

I absolutely adore [name_f]Blythe[/name_f]. I love the sound, it feels both firm and unyielding and a little soft and whimsical at the same time. I like some more solid sounding girls names and the consonant ending gives it that, but is softened some by the [name_m]Bly[/name_m]- start.

I like that it is unusual and not like many other names, while still being readable and associated with some other modern names people have turned towards ([name_u]Briar[/name_u] is the first one that comes to mind). The meaning is also so lovely and the homonym [name_f]Blithe[/name_f] isn’t a bad association either. I have [name_f]Blythe[/name_f] [name_f]Cressida[/name_f] on my list and there I wrote:

I had a friend named Blythe growing up. We were like best friends. I did think it was a such a unique name because I had never heard it before. It was just different with such a happy meaning. I remember being in awe over her name and thinking that it was really stunning.

Now that I have known a Blythe and have that association though, its not realistically usable to me. Nothing bad against her, I still love the name and her even though she married someone controlling and moved out of state so we rarely talk anymore, but sometimes names just become associated with one person too much and it would be weird if I named my daughter after her just because we did grow apart and I am not big on passing down family or friend names anyhow.

But the name itself for me is still unique, joyous, light and quirky. I like it but I think due to Blythe Danner for some it may seem Hollywood glam or vintage but for me, I don’t get that vibe at all. Its more flower child.

Not my favorite by any means, but I actually find something about the shape and sound appealing, plus it’s like a nice pretty gold color to me

I used to feel the same as you, enhanced by the fact there’s a town called [name_f]Blythe[/name_f] a few hours from me that isn’t known for being…clean? However, the more exposure I’ve had to it on NB, the more I’ve come to like it. I really like the meaning & I think it’s a super fun, spunky, cool vintage/grandma name now, similar to [name_f]Pearl[/name_f] or [name_u]Frankie[/name_u].

I simply love [name_f]Blythe[/name_f], but most of the time I have this name as middle name:

  • Isadora [name_f]Blythe[/name_f]
  • Isadora [name_f]Blythe[/name_f] [name_f]Matilda[/name_f]
  • Margot [name_f]Blythe[/name_f]
  • Margot [name_f]Philippa[/name_f] [name_f]Blythe[/name_f]
  • Willow [name_f]Philippa[/name_f] [name_f]Blythe[/name_f]

The only time I have [name_f]Blythe[/name_f] as a first name, is in my [name_f]Blythe[/name_f] [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] [name_f]Juno[/name_f] combo.

Why do I like [name_f]Blythe[/name_f]?

  1. Because of its soft sound. Names with th sound are my weakness.
  2. Because of its spelling. I think the y makes this name really interesting, without being an alternative spelling.
  3. Because of its meaning, cheerful. I think it’s lovely.
  4. Because of its solemnity. [name_m]Even[/name_m] with a happy meaning, [name_f]Blythe[/name_f] is solemn, serious and, in my opinion, ages well.
  5. Because of its quirky, nerdy, formal, old-fashioned vibe.

I personally really love the name [name_f]Blythe[/name_f] mostly for the literary connections. I adore the [name_u]Anne[/name_u] of [name_u]Green[/name_u] Gables books and so names like [name_f]Marilla[/name_f] and [name_f]Avonlea[/name_f] seem sentimental and familiar. This extends to [name_f]Blythe[/name_f] for its association with [name_m]Gilbert[/name_m] [name_f]Blythe[/name_f]- one of my favorite characters!
I also really like the happy and cheerful meaning surrounding it.

The look, the meaning, the connection go [name_u]Anne[/name_u] of [name_u]Green[/name_u] Gables, the uniqueness of it, it’s usability as middle name with so many first names have all made me obsessed with this slight beauty for a long time!
