This is for my best friend who’s expecting a little miracle. You guys helped me name my baby girl in [name]September[/name], and I turn again to your expertise to help us. [name]Do[/name] you know any names (for boy and girl as we don’t know the sex yet) that mean miracle or something of the same spirit? It can be in any language.
From Behindthename.com - they have a great “search for words in meanings” function. A search for miracle gives:
ALAZNE f Basque
KARISHMA f [name]Indian[/name]
[name]MILAGROS[/name] f Spanish
[name]MIRACLE[/name] f English (Modern)
[name]NESSA[/name] (2) f Hebrew
The 2 by [name]Nessa[/name] means there’s another origin to the name (I’m guessing this is the fact that [name]Nessa[/name] is a Scottish nickname for [name]Agnes[/name], but I didn’t check).
I also think a little [name]Mira[/name] would be cute for a [name]Miracle[/name] girl, or [name]Mila[/name] for a girl via [name]Milagros[/name].
A few more referring to specific miracles, if your friend is looking for miracle in a specifically [name]Christian[/name] sense:
[name]Anastasia[/name] - means resurrection
[name]Talitha[/name] - the aramaic word for “little girl” that [name]Jesus[/name] says when he raises the rabbi’s daughter from the dead.
[name]Lazar[/name] or [name]Lazarus[/name] might be good for a boy by a similar route to [name]Talitha[/name].
And for either Jewish or [name]Christian[/name]:
[name]Isaac[/name]: in the Bible [name]Sarah[/name] laughs when she becomes pregnant with [name]Isaac[/name], because she was well past the age of expecting to be a mother, so he was a miracle of sorts.
[name]Nathaniel[/name], [name]Theodore[/name], [name]Dorothy[/name], [name]Dorothea[/name], [name]Theodora[/name] all have meanings that refer to “gift of god” too.
What about names that mean victory especially if conception was difficult? There are tons of choices aside from the obvious [name]Victor[/name]/[name]Victoria[/name]. I love Segolene, it means “sweet victory” or “gentle, soft victory” unfortunately its really political in [name]France[/name].
What about [name]Mirabelle[/name]? It doesn’t mean miracle, but it sounds close enough. Picking a name because it sounds like the word “miracle” is just as good as picking a name that means “miracle” in my book. It’s the intention behind the name and what it means to the parents that define the meaning to me.
[name_m]Aaron[/name_m] does not mean miracle. And [name_f]Arabella[/name_f] is a form of [name_f]Amabel[/name_f], meaning “lovable”. People, don’t trust baby naming sites other than Behind The Name (including Nameberry, I’m afraid).
