Boy / Girl twin names. Help!

I’m having my twins in a week and I still haven’t decided on names! I’m finding it frustrating trying to have them complement each other. I know they don’t need to but I can’t help but gravitate to complementary names.

What does everyone think of [name_m]Eli[/name_m] & [name_f]Ivy[/name_f]? [name_m]Or[/name_m] maybe I should do something longer with nicknames like [name_m]Lachlan[/name_m] (Lachy) and [name_f]Lorelai[/name_f] (Lola)? And I really like the name [name_m]Jack[/name_m] and [name_f]Sarah[/name_f] (nickname could be Sadie), but would these be too traditional / boring? I like that [name_m]Jack[/name_m] is such a strong name. There’s also my dad’s name [name_m]Evan[/name_m] which might go nicely with [name_f]Vera[/name_f].

Other names I like are [name_m]August[/name_m], [name_f]Chloe[/name_f], [name_f]Serena[/name_f], [name_f]Willow[/name_f], [name_f]Estelle[/name_f] / [name_f]Stella[/name_f], [name_f]Bella[/name_f], [name_f]Skyler[/name_f], [name_f]Violet[/name_f], Élodie, [name_m]Levi[/name_m], [name_f]Scarlet[/name_f], [name_f]Quinn[/name_f], [name_m]Beau[/name_m], [name_m]Leo[/name_m], [name_m]Oscar[/name_m], [name_m]Vance[/name_m], [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m].

Open to all the feedback! I like names that are easy to roll off the tongue and recognisable enough they won’t constantly be correcting people or spelling it out.

I feel like I’ve been looking at names so long almost all of them have lost their full appeal and now I haven’t got any picked out!

[name_m]Eli[/name_m] & [name_f]Ivy[/name_f] and [name_m]Evan[/name_m] & [name_f]Vera[/name_f] are wonderful. [name_m]Jack[/name_m] & Sarah/Sadie is my favorite of your ideas, though. I don’t think they’re boring. I think they’re timeless and ageless!

Thankyou - [name_m]Jack[/name_m] is my favourite boys name and I’ve loved the name [name_f]Sarah[/name_f] since I was a little girl. With everyone choosing such unique names though I worry my twins will be disappointed with their names but hearing you like them best of all the options helps
Thankyou for all the suggestions too! I’m a solo mum so I don’t get to run names by anyone for feedback.

Thankyou for the suggestions, I quite like the combination [name_m]August[/name_m] & [name_f]Serena[/name_f] and hadn’t put the two together.

omg, I am here to second [name_m]August[/name_m] and [name_f]Serena[/name_f]! But, I actually really like [name_m]Jack[/name_m] and [name_f]Sarah[/name_f] too, or maybe if you want to make it a little more interesting, [name_m]Jack[/name_m] & [name_f]Serena[/name_f]?

[name_m]Eli[/name_m] and [name_f]Ivy[/name_f] are lovely names as well, I think my hangup is how similar they sound, it’s almost a little hard to say together?

Good luck!! Twins are amazing!

What came through reading your message is that you love [name_m]Jack[/name_m] and [name_f]Sarah[/name_f]. They are perfect together. I like that they are not matchy at all but they are in the same vein.

[name_m]Eli[/name_m] & [name_f]Ivy[/name_f] is a bit tongue twisty, but I admit I’m in the vast minority that I prefer twins to have individually outstanding names instead of trying to complement. You can complement by no. of letters or era or origin. On the other hand, [name_m]Eli[/name_m] and [name_f]Ivy[/name_f] are NOT terrible matchy and I like both names.

I LOVE both names [name_m]Lachlan[/name_m] and [name_f]Lorelai[/name_f] (I prefer Lorelei). I’d call them in full, but I’m not a nn person. [name_f]My[/name_f] favorite nn combo is [name_m]Lock[/name_m] and [name_f]Lore[/name_f].

[name_m]Evan[/name_m] and [name_f]Vera[/name_f] is as great as [name_m]Jack[/name_m] and [name_f]Sarah[/name_f]. Fantastic! The same number of letters and the snazzy v- that’s the way I like to match. I also favor honor names. Could [name_f]Vera[/name_f] get an honor name in the mn position?

I’d put together:
[name_f]Chloe[/name_f] & [name_m]Levi[/name_m]
[name_m]Beau[/name_m] & [name_f]Skyler[/name_f]
[name_f]Serena[/name_f] & [name_m]Vance[/name_m]
[name_f]Elodie[/name_f] & [name_m]August[/name_m]
[name_m]Levi[/name_m] & [name_f]Stella[/name_f]
[name_f]Estelle[/name_f] (a personal fave) & [name_m]Oscar[/name_m]
[name_m]Sebastian[/name_m] & [name_f]Willow[/name_f]

I vote [name_f]Vera[/name_f] & [name_m]Evan[/name_m] w/ [name_m]Jack[/name_m] and [name_f]Sarah[/name_f] nearly tied.

Personally I really love [name_f]Ivy[/name_f] + [name_m]Jack[/name_m] together. Maybe it’ll be easier to decide once you meet them. Best of luck 🩷🩵

Lots of great names here. I think your list is a good starting point.

Some thoughts:

If you want names that are easy to say and spell, I think [name_f]Lorelai[/name_f] is the only one that might cause some trouble with that.

“Too traditional” or “too boring” is a matter of opinion and your personal style. The names you like aren’t boring to you, and why worry about if someone else who doesn’t have to be named that think it’s too boring? No name is going to please everyone.

I like [name_m]Eli[/name_m] and [name_f]Ivy[/name_f], [name_m]Jack[/name_m] and [name_f]Sarah[/name_f], [name_m]Evan[/name_m] and [name_f]Vera[/name_f] (but there are two pronunciations of [name_f]Vera[/name_f], you might have to correct people about that occasionally). For the names you haven’t paired up, may I suggest…

[name_m]Leo[/name_m] and [name_f]Stella[/name_f]?
[name_f]Quinn[/name_f] and [name_m]Vance[/name_m]?
[name_f]Elodie[/name_f] and [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m]?
[name_f]Violet[/name_f] and [name_m]August[/name_m]?
[name_f]Bella[/name_f] and [name_m]Beau[/name_m]?
[name_f]Chloe[/name_f] and [name_m]Levi[/name_m]?
[name_m]Lachlan[/name_m] and [name_f]Willow[/name_f]?

Wow thankyou so much for all your replies. I really appreciate the ideas and feedback. I never realised how hard it would be - it feels so monumental what their names will be. But it’s nice to hear from many of you, that if I went with [name_m]Jack[/name_m] & [name_f]Sarah[/name_f] they would be good options. I do like that [name_f]Sarah[/name_f] isn’t even in the top 100 names anymore. Hopefully it won’t be thought of as an ‘old lady’ name but if she didn’t like it she could always go by [name_f]Sadie[/name_f].

I think I will try and make a shorter list of options and have to decide when I meet them.

Others feel free to add two cents though, really enjoying everyone’s preferences and twin name ideas! I am still quite undecided and will have to think about it more.

[name_m]Jack[/name_m] is timeless and you seem to like it a lot. I do too. [name_f]Sarah[/name_f] is a classic too but honestly it’s a little overplayed. Also don’t think [name_f]Sadie[/name_f] is an obvious nickname for that. Why not [name_m]Jack[/name_m] and another name? [name_m]Jack[/name_m] and [name_f]Elodie[/name_f] sounds nice. “Jack and El” or [name_m]Jack[/name_m] and [name_f]Skyler[/name_f] “Sky”.

[name_m]Eli[/name_m] and [name_f]Ivy[/name_f] are cute and cool!
[name_m]Lachlan[/name_m] and [name_f]Lorelei[/name_f] feel rugged, slightly mystical and charming together.
[name_m]Jack[/name_m] and [name_f]Sarah[/name_f] are nice, but I think [name_m]Jack[/name_m] and [name_f]Sadie[/name_f] would be better.

Some more sets using your list:

[name_f]Violet[/name_f] and [name_m]Jack[/name_m]
[name_f]Stella[/name_f] and [name_m]August[/name_m]

[name_m]Eli[/name_m] & [name_f]Ivy[/name_f] are my favorites out if your list.

I don’t think [name_m]Jack[/name_m] & [name_f]Sarah[/name_f] are too boring, but [name_m]Jack[/name_m] is VERY popular lately. I know several. What about [name_m]Jude[/name_m] & [name_f]Sarah[/name_f]? [name_m]Or[/name_m] [name_m]Luke[/name_m] & [name_f]Sarah[/name_f]?

What about middles? Using your lists I like:

[name_m]Eli[/name_m] [name_m]August[/name_m] & [name_f]Ivy[/name_f] [name_f]Quinn[/name_f]
[name_m]Eli[/name_m] [name_m]Vance[/name_m] & [name_f]Ivy[/name_f] [name_f]Scarlet[/name_f]
[name_m]Jude[/name_m] [name_m]Lachlan[/name_m] & [name_f]Sarah[/name_f] [name_f]Violet[/name_f]
[name_m]Luke[/name_m] [name_m]Oscar[/name_m] & [name_f]Sarah[/name_f] [name_f]Elodie[/name_f]
[name_m]Levi[/name_m] [name_m]August[/name_m] & [name_f]Sarah[/name_f] [name_f]Ivy[/name_f]
[name_m]Evan[/name_m] [name_m]Oscar[/name_m] & [name_f]Sarah[/name_f] [name_f]Quinn[/name_f]

Thankyou, I’m liking [name_m]Eli[/name_m] & [name_f]Ivy[/name_f] quite a bit too. [name_f]Ivy[/name_f] was always a favourite of mine growing up. But both names are also quite popular in my country (Australia).

Middle names I haven’t thought too much on! But I’d been focused on trying to use family names to have extra meaning - my Dad’s name is [name_m]Evan[/name_m] which I quite like but I don’t know if it would go with [name_m]Eli[/name_m] as much as some of the other names. Another family name is [name_m]Lloyd[/name_m]. And for my girl, my mother’s name is [name_f]Christine[/name_f] which I’m not keen on and either is she! But I could use her middle name [name_f]Alison[/name_f], or honor it with [name_f]Alice[/name_f] instead. They’ll both be such big parts of the twins lives since I’m a solo mum. But my mum keeps reminding me I don’t have to use family names so perhaps I should explore this some more. It’s just been so hard to even get first names!

[name_m]Jake[/name_m] is also a strong boys name

Great choices, you cant go wrong. Congrats! I would pick my favorite name (either gender). Now that you are half way done naming, decide on the second one. I don’t think being a set is most important. They’re going to be their own people.

With [name_m]Jack[/name_m] I really like [name_f]Ivy[/name_f] best but overall I would vote [name_f]Ivy[/name_f] & [name_m]Vance[/name_m] for the nice and subtle repetition of sounds and because (at least to me) it’s a fresh, unexpected duo.

If you like [name_m]Jack[/name_m] & [name_f]Sarah[/name_f] best though, they are both classics  You could use a spelling variation to “give it some new life” if you think it may seem overworn. (Sara, [name_f]Cera[/name_f], Sera.)

[name_f]Elodie[/name_f] & [name_m]Beau[/name_m] would make a great set also

In terms of choosing names that complement each other, I agree that its especially nice when twins have names that make sense together! But I don’t think complementary names need to be overly ‘matchy’ to work well together. Some (hopefully) helpful things to keep in mind when trying to find complementary names:

  • Complementary names usually have the same ‘vibe’ eg) [name_m]Jack[/name_m] and [name_f]Sarah[/name_f] (more traditional)
  • But you can also play with sound to tie them together. The obvious thing would be to choose the same first letter eg) [name_m]Lachlan[/name_m] and [name_f]Lorelai[/name_f]. (A super cute option! Although some parents find this type of connection a little bit too predictable for them)
  • But you can also consider more subtle connections that won’t feel as matchy, but will still connect your twins. Like both names sharing a consonant or vowel eg) [name_m]Levi[/name_m] and [name_f]Violet[/name_f] (both have a strong /i/ sound and share an /l/ sound) or [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m] and [name_f]Estelle[/name_f] (both share an /e/, /s/ and /t/)
  • Another option is to consider the meanings of their names eg) [name_m]Beau[/name_m] and [name_f]Bella[/name_f] (meaning handsome and beautiful) or [name_m]August[/name_m] and [name_f]Willow[/name_f] (with a nature connection)

But remember that at the end of the day the only opinion that matters is yours! And after seeing the list of beautiful names you’ve already been considering, I’m sure your twins will have the most perfect names!
