Boy/Girl twins help!

I’m 15 weeks pregnant with boy/girl twins. My wife and I have a 2yo named [name_f]Clio[/name_f] (nod to the muse of history). I am struggling, particularly with girl names. I would say that my style leans more towards academic/historical/literary/obscure botanical and my wife’s style is more down-to-earth (boys) and flowery/old-fashioned (girls).

My current lists

[name_m]Boy[/name_m]: [name_m]Anatole[/name_m] (this would have been my daughter’s name), [name_m]Pascal[/name_m], [name_m]Solan[/name_m], [name_m]Ptolemy[/name_m].

[name_f]Girl[/name_f]: [name_f]Delphine[/name_f], [name_m]Artemis[/name_m], [name_f]Euphemia[/name_f], [name_f]Apollonia[/name_f], [name_m]Sola[/name_m], [name_f]Zuri[/name_f], [name_f]Solstice[/name_f], [name_f]Lucinda[/name_f], [name_f]Evensong[/name_f].

[name_m]Her[/name_m] lists:

[name_m]Boy[/name_m]: [name_m]Clay[/name_m], [name_m]Orlando[/name_m], [name_m]Bear[/name_m], [name_m]Lucian[/name_m], [name_m]Hollis[/name_m], [name_m]Glen[/name_m], [name_m]Reed[/name_m]

[name_f]Girl[/name_f]: [name_f]Hyacinth[/name_f], [name_f]Pearl[/name_f], [name_f]Opal[/name_f], [name_f]Cordelia[/name_f], [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f], [name_f]Celeste[/name_f], [name_f]Marcelline[/name_f], [name_m]Halcyon[/name_m], [name_f]Dawn[/name_f], [name_f]Zinnia[/name_f], [name_f]Briar[/name_f].

I tend to feel very strongly about stylistic matching. I love [name_m]Reed[/name_m] and [name_f]Pearl[/name_f] as a combo, but they feel a bit rustic compared to [name_f]Clio[/name_f]. If I had to name the babies today with no input, they’d probably be [name_m]Anatole[/name_m] and [name_f]Euphemia[/name_f] or [name_m]Anatole[/name_m] and [name_m]Artemis[/name_m] just because they all seem to fit together. My wife loves [name_f]Pearl[/name_f], but I don’t love it next to any of the more academic/historical boy names I like.

So, would love to hear any suggestions for names that might appeal.

I like obscure, rare names, with a bit of gravitas behind them that are still wearable and not a beast to pronounce.

Congratulations! [name_f]Clio[/name_f] is such a beautiful, distinctive name, and it gives you a really lovely foundation to work from.

I really like both of your lists, and I actually do think [name_m]Reed[/name_m] and [name_f]Pearl[/name_f] work well together and could sit nicely with [name_f]Clio[/name_f]. That said, I completely understand what you mean about the trio not quite vibing the way you want.

It might help to aim for names with some historical, literary, or mythological roots that are still intuitive to say and not too ornate. That “middle space” feels like it captures both of your styles really nicely.

For boys, some ideas that could work either with or without [name_f]Pearl[/name_f] as a twin:
[name_m]Leander[/name_m], [name_m]Evander[/name_m], [name_m]Soren[/name_m], [name_m]Sylvan[/name_m], [name_m]Silas[/name_m], [name_m]Felix[/name_m], [name_m]Bastian[/name_m], [name_m]Heath[/name_m], [name_m]Ambrose[/name_m], [name_m]Linden[/name_m], [name_m]Ansel[/name_m], [name_m]Ellis[/name_m], [name_m]Julian[/name_m], [name_m]Alban[/name_m], [name_m]Jasper[/name_m], [name_m]Linus[/name_m], [name_m]Isidore[/name_m], [name_m]Cassian[/name_m], [name_m]Caspar[/name_m], [name_m]Cyrus[/name_m], [name_m]Caius[/name_m]
(not sure if you’re avoiding shared initials with [name_f]Clio[/name_f])

For girls, some options that bridge your styles:
[name_f]Iris[/name_f], [name_f]Lyra[/name_f], [name_f]Thalia[/name_f], [name_f]Daphne[/name_f], [name_f]Elowen[/name_f], [name_f]Zinnia[/name_f], [name_f]Isadora[/name_f], [name_f]Leonora[/name_f], [name_f]Octavia[/name_f], [name_f]Flora[/name_f], [name_f]Isolde[/name_f], [name_f]Bryony[/name_f], [name_f]Elora[/name_f], [name_f]Callista[/name_f], [name_f]Cressida[/name_f], [name_f]Ione[/name_f], [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f], [name_f]Estelle[/name_f], [name_f]Linnea[/name_f], [name_f]Seren[/name_f], [name_f]Bronwyn[/name_f]

[name_f]Hope[/name_f] this helps!

I’ve always liked Troy/Troye and [name_m]Rex[/name_m] with Clio/Cleo, as for girl names, [name_f]Iris[/name_f] could be cute, it’s a flower, and part of the eye, but it’s also a minor Greek goddess, the goddess of rainbows.

Congratulations!! [name_f]Love[/name_f] to see [name_f]Clio[/name_f] used. I agree with the above that [name_f]Pearl[/name_f] and [name_m]Reed[/name_m] could work with [name_f]Clio[/name_f], but I see your concern - [name_f]Clio[/name_f] having more of an overlap between your lists (short and sweet, not unfamiliar) helps it work with a name like [name_f]Pearl[/name_f], but creates a bigger style gap to your favourites.

From your lists, [name_f]Delphine[/name_f] caught my eye - it goes well with [name_f]Clio[/name_f], has two nature-related meanings (one of them flowery!), relates to history and is somewhat old-fashioned. It also feels like a nice bridge between your preference for more elegant, historical names and your wife’s preference for something slightly more traditional.

I love the previous suggestions of [name_f]Iris[/name_f] and [name_m]Leander[/name_m] - both mythological and rooted in history while maintaining some retro flair (Iris in particular) and down-to-earth quality.

Suggestions:
[name_f]Ianthe[/name_f] - [name_f]Calla[/name_f] - [name_f]Cosima[/name_f] - [name_f]Maris[/name_f] - [name_f]Romilly[/name_f] - [name_f]Tamsin[/name_f] - [name_f]Leonie[/name_f] - [name_f]Solene[/name_f] - [name_f]Selene[/name_f] - [name_f]Zelia[/name_f] - [name_f]Zora[/name_f] - [name_f]Illyria[/name_f] - [name_f]Evanthe[/name_f] - [name_f]Saffron[/name_f] - [name_f]Melusine[/name_f] - [name_f]Eudora[/name_f] - [name_f]Honora[/name_f] - [name_f]Veda[/name_f] - [name_f]Lunaria[/name_f] - [name_f]Rowena[/name_f] - [name_f]Eulalia[/name_f] - [name_f]Althea[/name_f] - [name_f]Thora[/name_f] - [name_f]Verity[/name_f] - [name_f]Lucille[/name_f]
[name_m]Alaric[/name_m] - [name_m]Stellan[/name_m] - [name_m]Florian[/name_m] - [name_m]Vale[/name_m] - [name_m]Ashby[/name_m] - [name_m]Atlas[/name_m] - [name_m]Peregrine[/name_m] - [name_m]Basil[/name_m] - [name_m]Oleander[/name_m] - [name_m]Lysander[/name_m] - [name_m]Amias[/name_m] - [name_m]Elian[/name_m] - [name_m]Anselm[/name_m] - [name_m]Fabian[/name_m] - [name_m]Tobin[/name_m] - [name_m]Rafferty[/name_m] - [name_m]Ames[/name_m]

Congrats!

With Clio, I’d aim for names that sit between your styles - intellectual and distinctive, but still accessible and a little playful.

Some of your wife’s names lean quite rustic/southern compared to Clio (like Clay, Glen, Reed, Dawn, maybe Briar) - I’d personally steer away from those.

At same time, I also find Anatole and Euphemia a little too weighty and formal next to Clio’s lighter, more modern and spunky energy. (Some of those on your list also have slightly awkward sound associations to my ear, but that may not matter to you. Eg Anatole and Euphemia, Sola, and Solan - Solan for eg is a bit close to “stolen” for me, and for him, I’d sub in Soren, Sylvan, Sylvester or Stellan.)

A few combinations that seem balanced to me:

  • Clio, Xanthe & Florian
  • Clio, Delphine & Leander
  • Clio, Phaedra & Orlando
  • Clio, Evangeline & Soren
  • Clio, Daphne & Sylvan
  • Clio, Zuri & Hollis
  • Clio, Hyacinth & Felix
  • Clio, Zinnia & Orson “Bear”
  • Clio, Vesper & Albion
  • Clio, Iris & Rafferty
  • Clio, Sabine & Lucian
  • Clio, Delphine/Daphne & Ambrose
  • Clio, Saffron & Rupert
  • Clio, Solstice & Ever

[name_f]Clio[/name_f], [name_f]Opal[/name_f] & [name_m]Rowan[/name_m]

My taste run more akin to yours but I’ll try to balance and also match big sis’ vibe!

Maybe:

[name_f]Thisbe[/name_f] & [name_m]Julian[/name_m]

[name_f]Ianthe[/name_f] & [name_m]Remus[/name_m]

[name_f]Viola[/name_f] & [name_m]Oswin[/name_m]

[name_f]Ivette[/name_f] & [name_m]Ansel[/name_m]

[name_f]Odelyn[/name_f] & [name_m]Roland[/name_m]

[name_f]Rasine[/name_f] & [name_m]Alaric[/name_m]

Hopefully these help!

Thanks so much!

I love [name_f]Iris[/name_f]. Unfortunately it is very popular in my area—there are 2 at Clio’s preschool.

If you don’t mind the twins having the same first initial, I really like [name_m]Pascal[/name_m] and [name_f]Pearl[/name_f] as a combo and I think they both work with [name_f]Clio[/name_f].

[name_f]Clio[/name_f], [name_m]Pascal[/name_m] and [name_f]Pearl[/name_f]

[name_m]Reed[/name_m] and [name_f]Pearl[/name_f] work great with [name_f]Clio[/name_f] imo. [name_m]Reed[/name_m] and [name_f]Delphine[/name_f] would be fun too. [name_m]Pascal[/name_m] and [name_f]Opal[/name_f] would make a darling pair. Different, but recognizable.

[name_m]Reuben[/name_m] and [name_f]Eloise[/name_f]
[name_m]Caspian[/name_m] and [name_f]Athena[/name_f]
[name_m]Dorian[/name_m] and [name_f]Leda[/name_f]
[name_m]Ansel[/name_m] and [name_f]Giada[/name_f]
[name_m]Vaughn[/name_m] and [name_f]Blythe[/name_f]
[name_m]Monty[/name_m] and [name_f]Eleni[/name_f]
[name_m]Hugo[/name_m] and [name_f]Ophelia[/name_f]
[name_m]Gideon[/name_m] and [name_f]Cecily[/name_f]
[name_m]Fitz[/name_m] and [name_f]Veda[/name_f]
[name_m]Redford[/name_m] and [name_m]Artemis[/name_m]
[name_m]Foster[/name_m] and [name_f]Isadora[/name_f]
[name_m]Percival[/name_m] and [name_f]Octavia[/name_f]
[name_m]Whitaker[/name_m] and [name_f]Persephone[/name_f]
[name_m]Rafferty[/name_m] and [name_f]Thalia[/name_f]
[name_m]Langston[/name_m] and [name_f]Greta[/name_f]

I really love [name_m]Artemis[/name_m], [name_m]Clay[/name_m], [name_m]Reed[/name_m], [name_f]Celeste[/name_f] and [name_f]Briar[/name_f]!

other ideas:
[name_m]Demeter[/name_m], [name_f]Marina[/name_f], [name_f]Odette[/name_f], [name_f]Selah[/name_f], [name_f]Verity[/name_f], [name_f]Eden[/name_f], [name_f]Davina[/name_f], [name_f]Amalia[/name_f]

[name_m]Asa[/name_m], [name_m]Bellamy[/name_m], [name_m]Cassian[/name_m], [name_m]Devereaux[/name_m], [name_m]Dorian[/name_m], [name_m]Evander[/name_m], [name_m]Emrys[/name_m], [name_m]Gideon[/name_m], [name_m]Hale[/name_m], [name_f]Palmer[/name_f], [name_m]Perry[/name_m], [name_m]Rhodes[/name_m], [name_m]Sterling[/name_m], [name_f]Sage[/name_f]

Ah, unfortunate. I also thought of [name_f]Delphi[/name_f], like [name_m]The[/name_m] [name_m]Oracle[/name_m] of [name_f]Delphi[/name_f]. [name_m]Not[/name_m] sure if that’s less popular in your area.

[name_f]Clio[/name_f] is so charming!

Some new ideas:

[name_m]Percy[/name_m]
[name_m]Oswin[/name_m]
[name_m]Osric[/name_m]
[name_m]Montague[/name_m]

[name_m]Linus[/name_m]
[name_m]Zenon[/name_m]
[name_m]Ferris[/name_m]
[name_m]Ozias[/name_m]

[name_f]Una[/name_f] / [name_f]Oona[/name_f]
[name_f]Vita[/name_f]
[name_f]Apolline[/name_f]
[name_f]Anthea[/name_f]
[name_f]Xanthe[/name_f]
[name_f]Twila[/name_f]
[name_f]Mirabel[/name_f]
[name_f]Isolde[/name_f]
[name_f]Isadora[/name_f]
[name_f]Zelda[/name_f]

Some ideas:

Helen, Dahlia, Florence, Millicent

Darcy, Wilbur, Cedric, Phineas

[name_f]Delphine[/name_f] is top of our list for sure. I think [name_m]Anatole[/name_m] and [name_f]Delphine[/name_f] work pretty well together too.
