Boy name Downey

What do y’all think about the boy name Downey? It’s originally a last name, like [name_m]Robert[/name_m] Downey [name_m]Jr[/name_m], but I think I thought makes a nice first name. Unfortunately I couldn’t find it on here. So tell me what y’all think about it!

I actually think Downey would make a cool name and I especially love the RDJ association, which would be my first thought upon hearing this name. I see no reason why it shouldn’t work.

ETA: I didn’t think about the slur and, while I don’t associate it personally, it definitely isn’t positive. Maybe stick to it as a middle?

I think Downey would be a good name, but I think it would easily lead to bullying.

Sorry I’m not a fan, it doesn’t sound like a first name to me. But I could see it maybe as a nickname. I just think of downy detergent.

Where I live and likely other places, being called a “Downy” is a horribly insensitive and crude way to call someone stupid/retarded/etc as in a reference to Downs Syndrome. I would not use it as a first name under any circumstances. I have actually ended friendships over people using this insult.

I’ve heard the same thing, where I’m from…people used to love to call my cousin this terrible term :frowning:

Beyond that, it reminds me of the detergent brand and I can also think of a few things that could lead to teasing during puberty. I just don’t think this is a wise name to use, at least as a first name. If it had been a family name or something, then I could at least see that as a legitimate reason to consider it, but that doesn’t appear to be the case. I don’t mean to come off as harsh, but there is just a lot of things that make me uncomfortable about this name and how “cool” it sounds doesn’t take away from that.

My mind goes straight to detergent. Sorry :frowning:

Downey sounds like an insult, so I’m not a fan.

I’m not a fan, I see bullying with that name too.

I agree. The horrible insult was the first thing that came to mind. Plus “downy” as an adjective meaning a bit hairy isn’t a particularly pleasant image.

In theory it’s nice, but my first thought is fabric softener.

I wouldn’t recommend Downey, at least not as a first name. I thought of the horrible slur as well.

All I think of Ultra Downy.

THanks for all the input!
I realize it could lead to bullying especially in public schools, but I am not planning on sending my child to a school as I believe in homeschooling.
[name_f]Every[/name_f] name has good traits and bad nowadays, so for now I’m still considering it! Thanks so much for your thoughts!
