I donât love masculine names for girls - and especially not [name_m]Christopher[/name_m], It is far too traditional and masculine in my opinion. But I can get behind a few, and I have heard of [name_m]Owen[/name_m] for a girl and while Iâm not super keen on it, it has a gentle sound which could actually be ok.
Iâm not personally a fan of traditionally male names for girls and some like [name_m]Benjamin[/name_m], [name_m]Christopher[/name_m] and [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m] especially feel unusable. A few do sound alright though, for example [name_m]Owen[/name_m] does sound softer. [name_m]Blake[/name_m] [name_f]Lively[/name_f] and [name_m]Ryan[/name_m] [name_m]Reynolds[/name_m] oldest daughter is called [name_m]James[/name_m] which is kind of cool
I could definitely see masculine names becoming a trend.
Its not my favorite trend but sometimes its ok. I agree that [name_m]Owen[/name_m] would probably make the jump better than [name_m]Christopher[/name_m], partially because of the softer sound but also because [name_m]Christopher[/name_m] has several well known feminine forms so it feels a bit weird to go out of your way to give a girl the super masculine [name_m]Christopher[/name_m] when Christine/Christina/etc. were right there, you know?
Iâm for naming freedom and equality (obviously subject to names that would harm a child).
So, what I want is more fem-leaning unisex names being used for boys just as parents have been using masc-leaning unisex names for girls.
These names have typically not been âtraditionalâ - but / and I donât think girls should be given traditional boys names until there are more boys with girl names.
Donât get me wrong, I do like that thereâs names we recognise as male and female names but I donât like that parents will give all their daughters boyish names (Parker, [name_f]Morgan[/name_f] & James) but âover their dead bodiesâ would they name their son, [name_f]Cleo[/name_f] for eg, because it would be so terrible to be mistaken for a girl (but itâs not the case the other way around).
So letâs wait till boys use more girls name till we continue to name our girls hyper masc boysâ names! For me itâs a political issue.
But [name_m]Christopher[/name_m] has the nickname [name_m]Chris[/name_m] which is also Christinaâs nickname, so it may as well be [name_f]Christina[/name_f]. Though [name_m]Chris[/name_m] as a standalone would be fine.
Personally Iâm not a huge fan of girls being given overtly masculine names. Iâm also not a fan of traditionally masculine names becoming exclusively used for girls. Partly as I feel due to this recent trends we loose a lot lovely boy names to girls and also as it feels anti-feminist due to the trend typically not following suit for boys. Why is it âcoolâ for a girl to be called Harrison but not âcoolâ for a boy to be named Elizabeth? In my opinion itâs because masculinity is celebrated whereas a naming your boy Elizabeth is subjecting him to ridicule as femininity is associated with more negative traits. I have similar views to @EloiseT
I really dislike Christopher for a girl especially as you have the beautiful equivalents Christina, Christiana and even Christabel. As for Owen it feels more acceptable for girls but I still dislike.
Iâm not really a fan of boysâ names as girls, and I feel the same thing as @tori101 and @EloiseT . Girls are named things like [name_m]Parker[/name_m], [name_m]James[/name_m], [name_f]Morgan[/name_f], [name_f]Marley[/name_f], [name_f]Sutton[/name_f], [name_m]Hayden[/name_m], even [name_m]Myers[/name_m]! (I literally just got all these names while flipping through the kindergarten section of an elementary yearbook.) But boys are never named [name_f]Cleo[/name_f], [name_m]Rowen[/name_m], [name_f]Avery[/name_f] nowadays. Itâs like as if once a name is given to a few girls, itâs âalwaysâ a girl name. I feel like [name_m]Christopher[/name_m] and [name_m]Owen[/name_m] will always be boy names, and if you wanted an honor name for Christopher/wanted to use it for a girl, there are always the lovely [name_f]Christina[/name_f], [name_m]Christie[/name_m].
I donât necessarily dislike boys names for girls, like I love the name [name_m]Jasper[/name_m] for a girl, but I donât like how girls are given boy names, but thereâs never a boy named [name_f]Rain[/name_f] or [name_f]Willow[/name_f].
