Boy names from very old surnames

I was looking at a list of surnames from the 1500’s and thought a few might be useable (not necessarily for me). What do you think?

Knighton - reminded me of [name_m]Kingston[/name_m] quite a bit, so why not?
[name_m]Lyon[/name_m] - If [name_m]Fox[/name_m] works…
Northwoode - long middle maybe?
[name_m]Carew[/name_m] - Similar to [name_m]Crew[/name_m].
Sadler - It would go well with Western names like [name_u]Hunter[/name_u] and [name_m]Ryder[/name_m].
[name_m]Fowler[/name_m] - Unsure of this one. Maybe stick to [name_f]Lark[/name_f].
Wrenne - I haven’t seen [name_u]Wren[/name_u] spelled like this previously, but it seems like it would be.
Wylde - A spin on [name_m]Wilder[/name_m].
[name_m]Fleet[/name_m] - Seems similar to [name_u]Reed[/name_u] and other nature names.
Borrow - I just really like double middle letter names that end in ow.

Knighton - aounds very strong and noble, probably because of the knight in the name. I would use this as a middle.
[name_m]Lyon[/name_m] - This I love, I honestly would love a child named [name_m]Lyon[/name_m]. Like [name_m]Lyon[/name_m] [name_m]Edward[/name_m]. I had this combo on my list at one point. Its become a GP.
Northwoode - Very upscale sounding name almost too preppy for my taste. [name_m]Even[/name_m] if it was a first name the nn [name_u]North[/name_u] would be cool. But probably better in the middle.
[name_m]Carew[/name_m] - This not my style.
Sadler - I get what you are saying with the Western vibe maybe because the word sadle is in it. But I almost feel its cool too like [name_m]Slater[/name_m]. Far fetched but its what comes to mind.
[name_m]Fowler[/name_m] - NMS
Wrenne - Leave this to the girls and dislike this spelling a lot.
Wylde - This would be a super fun middle name. I kind of like it more than [name_m]Wilder[/name_m].
[name_m]Fleet[/name_m] - This is a pretty cool sounding, like you said very nature-ish. I wouldn’t mind it as a first name.
Borrow - Not a fan of this one.

Knighton-- [name_m]Kingston[/name_m] is a lot better. Knighton sounds made up…
[name_m]Lyon[/name_m]-- Is starting to grow on me. I agree with @scarletsway-- it’s good with [name_m]Edward[/name_m].
Northwoode-- No. Too preppy and made up. :frowning:
[name_m]Carew[/name_m]-- I actually like this one. The only thing I don’t like is that it almost sounds like cashew…
Sadler-- Like.
[name_m]Fowler[/name_m]-- Hmm, it’s OK…
Wrenne-- I like [name_u]Wren[/name_u] and [name_u]Ren[/name_u] a LOT better.
Wylde-- Cool as a middle name. But, not as good as [name_m]Wilder[/name_m].
[name_m]Fleet[/name_m]-- Awesome middle name!
Borrow-- NMS.

Sadler has a cool sound, but I’m afraid everyone would think Sandler.

One of my great grandmother’s maiden names was Castile. I’ve always thought that was pretty cool.

Knighton absolutely would work as a name! I would love to meet a little Knighton! He’s my favorite on this list. Others I find somewhat usable (as in they seem to fit with current trends) are Sadler, [name_m]Fowler[/name_m], Wylde and [name_m]Fleet[/name_m]. [name_m]Lyon[/name_m] too I suppose, but I can’t get past how it sounds like lyin’ as in, he’s lying. The others I find a little too out there, but that could change if I met a child with one of those names.

Interesting list. Personally, I’m not a fan of last names for first names (or middles) unless they are family names, but I know that’s not the commonly held view. As for these names in general:

Knighton - This name is difficult for me to say for some reason. Maybe it would be better in the UK where they pronounce their "t"s a bit more (I’m in the eastern US). Prefer Knightley – it’s easier to say and makes the Jane Austen connection, which is a plus for me.
Lyon - I like this one, but not pronounced as Lion (of which I’m not a fan). I would pronounce this as I pronounce the French town – lee-OH-n
Northwoode - No. Too in-your-face preppy/Kardashian-esque
Carew - Not bad, but I would assume the parents are huge baseball fans (because I can’t see any other reason for naming your kid this unless you are honoring Rod Carew).
Sadler - Eh. makes me think of saddle shoes and “sadling” someone with something (a negative connotation).
Fowler - This sounds way too much like a last name for me to like it unless it’s a family name.
Wrenne - Much prefer Wren.
Wylde - Great middle!
Fleet - Not a bad middle … but makes me think of Fleet Bank and Boston for some reason.
Borrow - Definitely not. Too common of a word name. Barrow would work much better, though it’s not really my style.

Thanks for this list – it was fun and educational.
