Boys name for a girl

Originally we wanted to name our daughter [name_m]Wyatt[/name_m] or [name_u]Colby[/name_u]/[name_u]Colbie[/name_u] but those were mercilessly shot down by everyone we talked to. I understand that [name_u]Colby[/name_u] doesn’t age well so that’s been put away.

My question is with names like [name_u]Blake[/name_u] and [name_u]James[/name_u] being commonly bestowed on little girls these days is naming my daughter [name_u]Logan[/name_u] or [name_m]Wyatt[/name_m] too far of a stretch?

I’m beginning to feel disheartened because I just can’t find what’s right.

For the most part, when people see or hear [name_u]Logan[/name_u] or [name_m]Wyatt[/name_m], they will naturally assume it refers to a boy (or man). This has the potential to cause untold confusion and mixups throughout her life. Who would enjoy needing to clarify, defend, and correct people about their name all the time? It would be annoying to have one’s name be a conversation piece… causing people to raise their eyebrows in surprise. I would hesitate to put her in that position. If you read some of the Nameberry threads where members tell how they feel about their names, you’ll find that those with traditional boys’ names often express feeling gypped and gravely disappointed about their name. In my opinion, from a practical standpoint, I think it is too risky that she will find her name to be a burden.

To answer your question, no it’s not a stretch to name a daughter [name_u]Logan[/name_u] or [name_m]Wyatt[/name_m].

However, you say you feel disheartened because you can’t find what’s right. What’s wrong with [name_m]Wyatt[/name_m]? It seems the only reason you’re not using it is because others didn’t like it…

For what it’s worth, I think [name_u]Colbie[/name_u] ages just fine and seems like your best option.

I actually love all of your names. I love [name_u]Logan[/name_u] best, but [name_m]Wyatt[/name_m] and [name_u]Colbie[/name_u] are gorgeous, too! Especially if you pair it with a more feminine middle, maybe?

[name_u]Logan[/name_u] [name_f]Claire[/name_f]
[name_u]Logan[/name_u] [name_f]Elisabeth[/name_f]
[name_u]Logan[/name_u] [name_f]Caroline[/name_f]
[name_u]Logan[/name_u] [name_f]Rose[/name_f]

[name_m]Wyatt[/name_m] [name_f]Amelia[/name_f]
[name_m]Wyatt[/name_m] [name_f]Rose[/name_f]
[name_m]Wyatt[/name_m] [name_f]Hazel[/name_f]
[name_m]Wyatt[/name_m] [name_f]Adeline[/name_f]

[name_u]Colbie[/name_u] [name_f]Adele[/name_f]
[name_u]Colbie[/name_u] [name_f]Rosalyn[/name_f]
[name_u]Colbie[/name_u] [name_f]Olivia[/name_f]
[name_u]Colbie[/name_u] [name_f]Isobel[/name_f]

Here are a few other options for inspiration:

[name_u]Emerson[/name_u] / [name_f]Emersyn[/name_f]
[name_u]Rey[/name_u]
[name_u]Grey[/name_u]
[name_u]Harper[/name_u]
[name_u]Marley[/name_u]
[name_u]Parker[/name_u]
[name_u]Quinn[/name_u]
[name_u]Reese[/name_u]
[name_u]River[/name_u]
[name_u]Sage[/name_u]
[name_u]Drew[/name_u]
[name_u]Dylan[/name_u]

Good luck!!

I am not a fan of boys names on girls but is that is your thing, go for it. I do like feminized versions of male names though like [name_f]Josephine[/name_f], [name_f]Francesca[/name_f], [name_f]Michaela[/name_f], etc.

if you are going to use a boys names for a girl, I think giving her options to feminize it if she chooses to do so. A female [name_u]James[/name_u] can always go by [name_u]Jamie[/name_u] if she prefers it. You might want to be prepared to give [name_u]Logan[/name_u] the nickname [name_f]Elle[/name_f] and [name_m]Wyatt[/name_m] the nickname [name_f]Atty[/name_f] if your daughter is the girly-girl type. The other option is to give her a feminine middle name and allow her to go by her middle name if she chooses to.

But they aren’t commonly bestowed on little girls, which is why you’re getting negative reactions. [name_m]Don[/name_m]'t let the celeb world fool you. Girls are still overwhelmingly given feminine names & most people still find masculine names on girls silly. If you’re going to give your girl a man’s name then develop a thicker skin & get used to defending it. Or choose a more feminine name

I have to agree with #everwaiteing and @nat108. I don’t think many of us would want everyone to assume we were a man based on our name so I just wouldn’t want to do that to my daughter. Some celebrities will do anything to get noticed even if it looks like they’re trying too hard, but I don’t think that’s what you’re going for. My suggestion (like that of @paw) is to name her a feminized male name and you can call her by a nick name that you like that is more masculine.

[name_f]Theodora[/name_f]
[name_f]Augusta[/name_f]
[name_f]Willa[/name_f]
[name_f]Josephine[/name_f]

Your names are nms, but I don’t see anything wrong with calling a girl [name_u]Logan[/name_u] or [name_m]Wyatt[/name_m]. You may be getting negative reactions now but most people will forget their initial opinions, or at the very least be more polite, once the baby is born and named. If these are the names you love, you should go for it. There’s nothing wrong with a girly girl having a unisex name, just as there’s nothing wrong with a tomboy having a girly name. Chances are they’ll hit on a nickname they like anyway.

Another thought - I think you are looking for something unique and uncommon so another suggestion is to look through the names that are on the list as 500 - 1000 and down and I think you will find some gorgeous names, that you may like.

I love [name_m]Wyatt[/name_m] for a girl - or [name_u]Dylan[/name_u]. I was a teacher, and taught a girl that was (then) in the 8th grade named [name_u]Logan[/name_u]. Everyone loved her name, and it fit her well. I say go with what you and your hubby like! [name_m]Wyatt[/name_m] is divine!

I think [name_u]Colbie[/name_u] is a pretty great name for a girl. I think of the singer [name_u]Colbie[/name_u] caillet … Plus I teach a girl named [name_u]Colbie[/name_u] so if I saw it on paper I would think it belonged to a girl.

I know a girl in her 20s named [name_u]Logan[/name_u] so I think it’s one of those names that belongs to both genders. She spells it [name_m]Logyn[/name_m]. (I know nameberry hates ys lol)

[name_u]Blake[/name_u] is nice for a girl too. I think of the gorgeous [name_u]Blake[/name_u] Lively. Plus my friend’s daughter is named [name_u]Blake[/name_u].

Here’s a list of girls I personally know with guyish names (long list because I teach)

[name_u]Cody[/name_u]
[name_u]Charlie[/name_u]
[name_u]Dylan[/name_u]
[name_f]Ryann[/name_f] ([name_u]Ryan[/name_u])
[name_u]Hunter[/name_u]
[name_u]Emerson[/name_u]
[name_u]Reid[/name_u]
[name_u]Tristan[/name_u]
[name_u]Ashton[/name_u]
[name_u]Micah[/name_u]
[name_u]Bentley[/name_u]
[name_u]Jordan[/name_u]

I think if you love a name you should give it to your daughter. Maybe stop sharing names with family/friends. Once your baby is born and given a name people aren’t going to say anything (unless you have rude friends). Good luck.

So, basically I don’t like boy names on girls, I feel like if you wouldn’t name a boy a girl name than you shouldn’t name a girl a boy name, that being said you can and should name your child the name that you and your SO agree on.

I think [name_u]Colbie[/name_u] would be fine, and would have no issues with aging well.

I don’t see why you couldn’t use any name on a kid of any gender to be honest. It’s all just socially constructed. You’d have to deal with other peoples opinions but you’ll have to deal with that no matter what you use. So just go with what you love. [name_m]Wyatt[/name_m] is amazing.

I don’t mind boys names for girls. To lessen the confusion and to offer your daughter options if she is a girly girl, i would use a clearly female name for the middle. I do like [name_u]Colbie[/name_u] quite a bit and it doesn’t sound too masculine to me. I don’t like [name_m]Wyatt[/name_m] as much - that sounds like a cowboy.

Thank you for kind words and input. I ran a few past my husband and we have a top 3! They are

[name_u]Logan[/name_u] [name_f]Elisabeth[/name_f]
[name_m]Wyatt[/name_m] [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] (my favorite!)
[name_u]Colbie[/name_u] [name_u]Quinn[/name_u] (work in progress)

[name_u]Colby[/name_u] ages fine. All of the Colbys I know are adults and don’t feel that their name is childish. Of all the names you mentioned, [name_u]Colby[/name_u] is the only one I don’t mind on a girl.

I don’t care for [name_u]Logan[/name_u] its firmly in boy town for me. [name_m]Wyatt[/name_m] seems workable.

Other suggestions
[name_u]Barry[/name_u]
[name_u]Percy[/name_u]
[name_u]Norris[/name_u]
[name_u]Stanley[/name_u]
[name_u]Roy[/name_u]
[name_m]Mathis[/name_m]
[name_m]Terrence[/name_m]

Sorry but I think [name_m]Wyatt[/name_m] for a girl is just silly. All I think of is [name_m]Wyatt[/name_m] Earp and that is a man if there ever was one.
The only name I would use from your list is [name_u]Colbie[/name_u] but all I think of is cheese.
[name_u]Logan[/name_u] seems pretty unisex to me, though I still wouldn’t use it.

I am admittedly a person who thinks girls need to have girl names though and tend to not even like unisex names (with very few exceptions.) I have to agree with whoever it was that said there truly aren’t a ton of girls being named boy names it just seems that way due to the celeb world.

If you don’t mind defending it, then go for it, but I would also be prepared to defend it. Often times peopele have no filter these days and you are bound to get some comments - if you go with [name_m]Wyatt[/name_m] especially.

I actually think that [name_m]Wyatt[/name_m] might have been introduced as a possible girls name because it’s the name of [name_f]Mila[/name_f] Kunis and [name_u]Ashton[/name_u] Kutcher’s daughter. [name_m]Wyatt[/name_m] [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] is adorable. Tbh calling a girl [name_u]Logan[/name_u] just reminds me of Bold and the Beautiful, but if you love it then use it. I love [name_u]Colby[/name_u] for a girl or boy, especially as a nn for [name_u]Cobalt[/name_u] ahaha. Either way, I think any of your options is fine, but my fave would be [name_m]Wyatt[/name_m]
