What’s your opinion on naming a little girl something like [name]Ryder[/name], [name]Finley[/name], or [name]Declan[/name]? Names that are typically a boy’s?
I know this is a bit of a popular topic, but I’m interested in hearing some opinions.
I’ve recently fallen in love with the name [name]Ryder[/name].
Are there any boys names that you would consider for a girl?
I think it’s great, and I wish all names were considered unisex. I personally love [name]Dylan[/name] and [name]James[/name] for both, but prefer them on girls. I also love [name]Josie[/name] and [name]Whitney[/name] for a boy (but not for girls at all). I think everyone has their own opinions/preferences, and that is fine! Variety is the spice of life.
[name]Declan[/name] is my favorite of your choices. [name]Ryder[/name] is certainly not my cup of tea, but if it sounds right for your child and you love it, you should feel free to use it, whether your baby has a penis or not.
I think [name]Ryder[/name] on either sex is dreadful, but especially for girls. “Ride her” or calling her a ‘[name]Rider[/name]’ are just way too obvious. I can imagine the name to be a burden.
Well I pronounce [name]Ryder[/name] as Rydah because I’m Australian so I don’t get the Ride Her connection.I do like [name]Spencer[/name], [name]Quinn[/name] and [name]Darcy[/name] for a girl.
It’s not really stupid to give a girl a boy’s name. And it doesn’t mean they’d rather have a boy instead of a girl. I think it’s mostly about creativity.
[name]Lindsay[/name], nowadays, is used only for a girl’s name, BUT [name]Lindsay[/name] WAS once a masculine name.
However, [name]Ryder[/name] is very terrible for a little girl. [name]Ryder[/name] (Ride Her) Come on… I like [name]Finley[/name] for a girl. That’s really cute. I think if you’re going to use typical boy names for a girl, make sure the boy’s names aren’t completely masculine. Names like [name]James[/name], [name]Mordecai[/name], [name]Gabriel[/name], Haslett, etc. would be too much for a girl.
I don’t like this trend. There are so many wonderful girl names (arguably more variety than for boys,) so what’s the appeal of co-opting a boy name? And it’s irritating that it’s perfectly acceptable to name a girl [name]Dylan[/name] or [name]Emerson[/name], but everyone would be aghast if you named your son [name]Ava[/name] or [name]Violet[/name]. It reinforces the idea that masculine is something to aspire to, while feminine is lesser. And with so many boy names being used on girls, now parents are turning to hyper-masculine names. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with unisex names, I just don’t think every boy name should be up for grabs for girls, until there’s nothing left for boys but [name]Thor[/name] and Tank!
I don’t mind them for other people’s kids but they wouldn’t be names I’d recommend if someone was undecided and wanted input.
But [name]Ryder[/name], no. Doesn’t give me the best impression for a boy and i really don’t think it’s a nice name to saddle (eh?) a girl with.
I don’t like this trend at all. So many parents are trying to be different and “unique” by sticking a boy name on a girl. It makes me feel bad for the boys who have to deal with the awkwardness of sharing a name with a girl in his class/work/etc… And believe me, its way more awkward for the boy. No boy wants to feel like he has a girly name and its way more acceptable for a girl to have a masculine name than a boy to have a unisex/feminine name. It also reinforces the idea that its okay for girls to be masculine and a tomboy, and also girly-girls, but its not okay for boys to be even a little feminine. I just feel so bad for boys in this day and age, I wish people would stop taking their names and putting them on their little girls and making them girls names.
As for the name [name]Ryder[/name], I think its bad enough on a boy. And I think in middle school and High School she could be teased/bullied for her name. Kids could twist its meaning to something other than a horse rider, if you know what I mean.
Most of the names “for boys” used on girls are names like [name]Quinn[/name], which I consider trendy and unisex. It’s not a traditional name by any means and it can go either way.
[name]James[/name], on the other hand, is a classic male name. If I met a girl baby [name]James[/name], I wouldn’t hesitate to say I think it belongs on a boy. This a traditional name that should be respected.
BTW where I live the Ride her, Ride her would certainly be a thing with middle school and high school and maybe older boys.
I’m all for traditionally “boys” names being used on girls! I think I usually prefer unisex names on girls actually.
For example: [name_u]Dylan[/name_u], [name_u]Quinn[/name_u], [name_u]Bailey[/name_u], [name_f]Sai[/name_f] and [name_u]Easton[/name_u] I would only use for a girl.
I hate this trend. It irks me because it’s reinforcing the idea that it’s okay to aspire to be masculine but not the other way round. It’s bad enough that little girls are bombarded with this crap everywhere they go all through their lives; why would you also do it with her name, the very thing that identifies who she is? If her name belongs on a boy, it’s like saying that everything else about her that identifies her as female is not good enough and she would be better if she were a boy.
It’s telling your daughter (and the world) that she’s not good enough as a girl. It’s an awful message to send.
I’am not ashamed to say that I love completely boy names on girls.I even [name_f]Love[/name_f] [name_m]Edward[/name_m] on a lil girl I think it will be super cute but probably thats only me lol.
As for [name_m]Ryder[/name_m] I love it on both sexes. I actually know a 17 yrs old girl named [name_m]Ryder[/name_m] (we go school together) and she wear it perfectly and as far as I know they didn’t make fun on her name.Personaly I would prefer to be named [name_m]Ryder[/name_m] from my own name or any other creative(no offense to anyone) .
Or it could just be the actual sound of the name. I’m not going to talk for anyone else but personally if I gave my daughter a masculine sounding name it would in no way be a statement on gender ideals and heaven forbid anyone think I was trying to tell my little girl that because she’s a girl she’s not good enough and that masculinity is “better”. Not at all meaning to sounds cranky, just for me the preference of unisex names (leaning towards masculine) on girls is only as deep as that, nothing more. I just think a little girl named [name_u]Dylan[/name_u] would be so stinking cute, that’s all!

I’m undecided on this trend. Some girl names I like were traditionally male names ([name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] being glaring example in my signature), however I dislike using names that are currently popular for boys on girls (e.g. [name_u]James[/name_u], [name_u]Elliot[/name_u], [name_u]Ryan[/name_u]).
Personally I do think that some names just sound better on the opposite gender. For example, I love the name [name_m]Tennyson[/name_m] on a girl (-son ending and all), but it just doesn’t grab me for a boy. I think it’s the ‘ee’ sound in the middle. Alternatively [name_f]Avis[/name_f] sounds more like a little boy than a little girl to me.
I think some names can suit either gender, but some names just fit the one (like anything ending in “son” is too masculine).
I know girls named:
[name_f]Cori[/name_f]
[name_u]Logan[/name_u]
[name_u]Dylan[/name_u]
[name_u]James[/name_u]
[name_m]Preston[/name_m]
[name_m]Remington[/name_m]
[name_m]Andrew[/name_m]
The name [name_u]Ashley[/name_u] was originally a boys name, but now it’s mostly used as a girl name. Which I find weird. I’m not a fan of the name, but I think it suits a boy more.
Disagreeing with the other people commenting, I think [name_u]James[/name_u] for a girl is cute.
As for the name [name_m]Ryder[/name_m], I can’t stand it either way.
