You may have seen the “let’s go Brandon” memes referring to the US president. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you will think this will affect the popularity and/or usability of the name [name_m]Brandon[/name_m] in the future, like what happened with [name_f]Karen[/name_f]? [name_m]Brandon[/name_m] is currently #166 and on a downward trend.
[name_f]My[/name_f] instinct is to say no but maybe just because I haven’t seen this joke very often. But [name_m]Brandon[/name_m] and [name_f]Karen[/name_f] share similar sounds and both feel tied to one generation, so it seems well equipped to become a meme name – I already associate it a little bit with a similar stereotype to [name_u]Kyle[/name_u] in the US.
I think [name_f]Karen[/name_f] was particularly negative because it was used as an insult. People don’t want to call their child “Karen” now because it’s like calling your child “asshole” or “idiot”. It isn’t a meaning you want associated with your child. Also, [name_f]Karen[/name_f] was already very unpopular for babies, as it was dated.
[name_m]Brandon[/name_m] is not, in itself, used as an insult. It’s also not a very uncommon name for small children at the moment - at least compared to where [name_f]Karen[/name_f] was just a few years ago. I don’t think many people would be too put off by the current association. [name_m]Brandon[/name_m] has only been on a slight decline in recent years, and I could even see this meme holding it in place, or even becoming more popular.
I’m actually happy you posted this. I’ve been wanting to ask Nameberry world myself. Unlike previous posters the LGB is something I come across often- be it the media or now it’s showing up on mugs and shirts, flags etc etc. so for me I’m thinking if it it usable it won’t be awhile…. I can’t see how you can be a [name_m]Brandon[/name_m] these days and not here LGB. Maybe internationally it is different but US I see it going on the decline for the next while.
I’ve been seeing it a lot online in the past month. While it’s not a direct insult like [name_f]Karen[/name_f], I could see people avoiding or purposely using [name_m]Brandon[/name_m] depending on which side they are on. Some memes die quickly though and it might be gone in like a year or so.
