Briar or Bryer

I love [name_u]Briar[/name_u] [name_u]William[/name_u] for a boy I think it’s so handsome. I’ve loved it for so long but it’s upsetting I keep seeing people name their daughters [name_u]Briar[/name_u]. To me it sounds all boy but I don’t want to give my son a “girl” name. But also don’t want to use a name that will keep becoming more popular. I much prefer [name_u]Briar[/name_u] to [name_m]Bryer[/name_m] but I don’t want to set him for for any negativity. If you named your son this how would you spell it?

[name_u]Briar[/name_u] has long been established as a unisex name. I don’t think anyone would accuse you of giving your son a “girl” name, and even if they did, does it really matter that much? You love the name, so use it. No name is inherently for only boys or only girls. If you’re a boy, then your name is a boy name.
Popularity is a whole different issue though. I do think [name_u]Briar[/name_u] seems like it’s climbing in popularity, but it seems more popular on nameberry than in real life to me. It’s still only at #755 in the charts and I doubt it’ll ever get to top 10 or even top 100 so it depends on what your definition is of too popular.

Thank you! I agree! I just keep seeing people on Instagram naming their daughters it when I never saw it anywhere before this past year

I would choose the handsome [name_m]Bryer[/name_m] for a boy.

If it was my son I’d spell it [name_u]Briar[/name_u], which I think definitely works for a boy btw. It’s not just a girl’s name, and while people might assume otherwise, that’s easily corrected. It seems to me that you prefer the spelling [name_u]Briar[/name_u] and are feeling pressured to “masculinise” it, rather than that being what you really want. I think you should choose the spelling that you like best!

it sounds like you prefer [name_u]Briar[/name_u], and in that case, i think you should go with the name you love, regardless of “girliness”. [name_u]Briar[/name_u] is a solid, gender neutral name, and sounds dashing with [name_u]William[/name_u]. i vote [name_u]Briar[/name_u]!

For a young man I think [name_m]Bryer[/name_m] is the only option

[name_m]Bryer[/name_m] [name_u]William[/name_u] ~ very classic name, I think a lot of mom’s would be fond of it too

[name_m]Bryer[/name_m] for a boy! Its not so much that [name_u]Briar[/name_u] is girly its more that [name_m]Bryer[/name_m] is more handsome.

[name_u]Love[/name_u] [name_u]Briar[/name_u] for a boy! Not a fan of the [name_m]Bryer[/name_m] spelling (it feels… incomplete?), but [name_f]Bryher[/name_f] is a beautiful Cornish variation - mainly used for girls there, but could also be used for a boy.

[name_u]Briar[/name_u], i don’t like the way [name_m]Bryer[/name_m] looks and I’ve always found [name_u]Briar[/name_u] to be very handsome on a boy (may be because I read a book with a character named [name_u]Briar[/name_u] [name_m]Moss[/name_m] that was a guy)

Definitely [name_u]Briar[/name_u]! [name_m]Bryer[/name_m] lacks the nature-y charm imo. [name_u]Briar[/name_u] is a perfectly unisex name.

I don’t particularly see the point in spelling the name a way you don’t like when most people will hear the name first rather than seeing it anyway. If they’re going to assume a [name_u]Briar[/name_u] is a girl, they’ll probably assume [name_m]Bryer[/name_m] is a girl too unless they saw it written first.

Plus I just prefer [name_u]Briar[/name_u] written out anyway. [name_m]Bryer[/name_m] feels very 80s to me and I have no good reason for why (because it’s definitely not).
