Bridget, Brighid or Brigid

When I did my most recent poll here for girl names, [name_f]Bridget[/name_f] won by a landslide to be a sister for Mhairi and [name_f]Fiona[/name_f]. My only question now is how do we spell it? Originally I had loved the spelling [name_f]Brighid[/name_f]. It just felt more authentic and gaelic, which I obviously love. But then I found that [name_f]Brighid[/name_f] maybe be actually pronounced differently, not sure if it would be too confusing. Then there’s [name_f]Brigid[/name_f]…or just the regular [name_f]Bridget[/name_f]?! Looking for opinions. Wondering if maybe just best to go with the straight forward [name_f]Bridget[/name_f].

I am very, very biased, but I think [name_f]Bridget[/name_f] is by far the best spelling.

I like [name_f]Brigid[/name_f] best with your other girls.

I actually prefer [name_f]Brigid[/name_f] or [name_f]Brighid[/name_f] with your daughters Mhairi & [name_f]Fiona[/name_f].

[name_f]Bridget[/name_f] - is the most common spelling, so that’s how people would write it in the first place.
[name_f]Brigid[/name_f] - she could always say she’s [name_f]Brigid[/name_f] with a -d. The spelling still comes naturally to me and she looks softer, which I like.
[name_f]Brighid[/name_f] - people would misspell this all the time also in the modern age, where everyone uses phones and autocorrect, it will always be made into [name_f]Brigid[/name_f].

Ok good point about autocorrect ha. My phone always autocorrects Mhairi to Mohair haha

I think [name_f]Bridget[/name_f] is lovely! I would go for that.

I think my biggest concern w/ [name_f]Bridget[/name_f] is that our last name also ends in T. It’s —mott. So I’m worried of [name_f]Bridget[/name_f] and —mott sharing similar sound at end.Though [name_f]Bridget[/name_f] is ‘it’ and our last name is ‘mott’ so doesn’t sound exact same. [name_m]Just[/name_m] hope it doesn’t sound silly.

I like [name_f]Bridget[/name_f] the best, just because I would be inclined to pronounce [name_f]Brigid[/name_f] differently. It sounds too much like frigid or rigid. Sometimes I even feel the urge to pronounce it with a hard g. I think [name_f]Bridget[/name_f] would go very nicely with Mhairi and [name_f]Fiona[/name_f].

All I can think of with [name_f]Brigid[/name_f] is the word “rigid”, which would automatically incline me to lean towards [name_f]Bridget[/name_f].

I think it’s a good point about [name_f]Brigid[/name_f] looking like frigid and rigid…not exactly nice words to be reminded of. And I find with the [name_f]Brighid[/name_f] spelling, even I sometimes find myself saying it w/ a hard g in my head. So I think I am leaning toward [name_f]Bridget[/name_f] for sure. Thanks for the honest feedback

Personally I prefer the beautifully sleek [name_f]Brigid[/name_f]. It’s so gorgeous and sweet. But [name_f]Bridget[/name_f] is of course lovely too, and most people see this at the normal spelling. With your very Irish named daughters I like [name_f]Brigid[/name_f] best. [name_f]Brighid[/name_f] is a modern twist and [name_f]Bridget[/name_f] is the Anglicized form. There’s also medieval [name_f]Brigit[/name_f].

The three spellings are pronounced differently.

[name_f]Brigid[/name_f] - "bridge-id” or “brigg-id” (hard g) or “bree-id”. I’ve also seen the saint’s name spelled as [name_f]Brigit[/name_f].
[name_f]Brighid[/name_f] - “bree-id” or “bride”
[name_f]Bridget[/name_f] - “brih-JIT”

If you want the most authentically Gaelic… go with [name_f]Brighid[/name_f].
If you want the most common and straightforward spelling and pronunciation…choose [name_f]Bridget[/name_f].

I def want it pronounced Brih-jit/[name_m]Bridge[/name_m]-id. I don’t like [name_f]Bree[/name_f]-id so I wouldn’t want to confuse anyone w/ a dif spelling. I love the idea of a more gaelic spelling to go w/ our girls’ names but don’t want to over complicate things. I plan to use the nickname [name_f]Bridie[/name_f] which I adore. My great grandmother was [name_f]Bridget[/name_f] went by [name_f]Bride[/name_f] and [name_f]Bridie[/name_f].

People will probably mispronounce her name all throughout her life if you were to spell it [name_f]Brighid[/name_f] or [name_f]Brigid[/name_f]. There would be less confusion if you were to just spell it [name_f]Bridget[/name_f] but it’s up to you.
