Bridget or Helen?

I love both of these names for similar reasons. [name]Both[/name] are old, spunky, and strong. My husband likes both but prefers [name]Bridget[/name].

A part of me still worries, though, that these will be considered “ugly,” “old lady” names - [name]Bridget[/name] more so than [name]Helen[/name]. I’m not so worried about when my daughter is a bit older; I’m certain she’ll be awesome enough to win people over to her name. But I do fear the initial judgment.

What do you think?

Also, any thoughts about middle names for [name]Bridget[/name] and [name]Helen[/name]?

Thanks!

[name]Bridget[/name]! Definitely [name]Bridget[/name]. It’s classic but also perfect on a little girl today. [name]Helen[/name] is still too grandma. Good luck!

I don’t think [name]Bridget[/name] is “old lady” at all! I think it’s a cool, strong and spunky name. [name]Helen[/name], however, is still in grandma territory.

I don’t love either but I prefer [name]Bridget[/name]. When I hear [name]Helen[/name] it’s just ugly to me, and I would expect it to be on an old woman. Sorry.

I think both names have good qualities. [name]Helen[/name] is sweetly vintage with a no-nonsense air about her and a mythological history. The Irish [name]Bridget[/name] is spunky, strong with an Irish saint connection. I think [name]Helen[/name] “sounds” more old-fashioned than [name]Bridget[/name]. I prefer [name]Helena[/name] to [name]Helen[/name] so I’ll voted for [name]Bridget[/name]. Have you considered [name]Helena[/name]? With [name]Bridget[/name], you have some wonderful nn’s as options: you can always call her [name]Bridie[/name], [name]Birdie[/name] or [name]Gidget[/name] when she’s a girl.

The only [name]Bridget[/name]'s I’ve known of we’re gorgeous… I don’t see that as an old lady name at all! [name]Helen[/name], on the other hand… I want to love it, but it does feel old to me. I could probably get on board with [name]Helene[/name] or [name]Helena[/name], though.

[name]Bridget[/name] [name]Helene[/name] gets my vote!

When people see a beautiful baby girl with a “grandma name”, their perception of that name will automatically change. I know mine did when I met little [name]Matilda[/name] the other day. [name]Helen[/name] is a lovely name with so many great connections in history. It’s a classic and you cannot go wrong with it. [name]Bridget[/name] is just OK in my personal book, though it’s not a bad choice either.

I agree with most of the others… I dont [name]Bridget[/name] as an old lady name in the slightest, but [name]Helen[/name] doesn’t seem like a young person’s name at all. I’ve never really met a nice [name]Helen[/name] either, so I think that makes it a little worse in my book, haha.

I love [name]Bridget[/name]! I don’t see it as an old lady name at all. My favorite combinations are [name]Bridget[/name] [name]Claire[/name] and [name]Bridget[/name] [name]Rose[/name].

I love the name [name]Bridget[/name] so much!! [name]One[/name] of my top choices has been [name]Brighid[/name] (still pn [name]Bridget[/name], just a gaelic spelling). I think [name]Bridget[/name] is one of those beautiful names that sounds amazing both as little girl and older lady. I have a ton of relatives named [name]Bridget[/name] but they mostly all go by [name]Bridie[/name]. [name]Helen[/name] is beautiful too though. What about [name]Bridget[/name] [name]Helen[/name] or [name]Helen[/name] [name]Bridget[/name]? [name]Both[/name] actually sound very nice together!
I was going to use [name]Brighid[/name] [name]Maude[/name] if we used it.

I think [name]Bridget[/name] sounds more youthful than [name]Helen[/name]. I picture a young girl when I hear [name]Bridget[/name], but that could be because I was friends with a teenage “[name]Bridgette[/name]” in high school so I still see her face when I hear the name.

I love [name]Bridget[/name]. You must use it!
I also like [name]Helen[/name], but [name]Helena[/name] even more.

That said, I’m clearly a fan of “old lady names”. I have a daughter named [name]Virginia[/name].

I would choose [name]Bridget[/name] hands down, I think it’s spunky and pretty. Perfect for a little girl!

I love [name]Bridget[/name].

I see [name]Helen[/name] as more of an old lady name. I think [name]Helena[/name] would be more usable. I had a friend growing up named [name]Helen[/name] and she HATED it because she felt it was such an old-lady name, but that was her opinion of the name. So something to consider.

Yay! I’m surprised (and glad) to hear all the positive reactions to [name]Bridget[/name]. Thanks, everyone!

I like both but greatly prefer [name]Helen[/name]. There’s a kind of beautiful simplicity to it that few names can pull off. Plus, it’s a classic and truly timeless name. I’d suggest:

[name]Helen[/name] [name]Arabella[/name]
[name]Helen[/name] [name]Isobel[/name]
[name]Helen[/name] [name]Matilda[/name]
[name]Helen[/name] [name]Eliza[/name]/ [name]Helen[/name] [name]Elise[/name]/ [name]Helen[/name] [name]Elisabeth[/name]
[name]Helen[/name] [name]Irene[/name]/ [name]Helen[/name] [name]Irina[/name]
[name]Helen[/name] [name]Fiona[/name]

[name]Bridget[/name], DEFINITELY!!!

Oh, I love [name]Bridget[/name]. I considered this name very strongly for our 4th girl. I don’t think it’s too “old lady” at all. If it were, there’s no way my husband would have considered it because he doesn’t like old lady names … and he really liked this one!

I think [name]Helen[/name] is a lovely name too, but it has a stronger “old lady” vibe still.

I’m biased, as it’s my mom’s name, but I prefer [name]Helen[/name].

My mom became a grandma on Friday… but she’s still only 48… so not an old lady at all!
