I just posted about my family names and [name]Britton[/name] is my maiden name and is important name to me but I’d always thought of it as a girls name, maybe a part of the whole girls named [name]Harper[/name] and [name]Reese[/name] kind of thing. Which typically is not my style but I think since it’s a family name I have an excuse lets say.
But people in the other thread posted [name]Britton[/name] as a boy. WDYT? Is [name]Britton[/name] a girly boys name or a boyish girls name, or neither!?!?!??
To me it sounds 100% masculine, I wouldn’t have ever thought I’d see it on a girl. However, I do live in the UK, where [name]Harper[/name] and [name]Reese[/name] are still considered predominantly male. Perhaps if you’re worried, just have it as a middle name for either gender?
Did your brother ever get teased? Does he like his name?? If you don’t mind me asking whats your name and other siblings (if you have any), I want to find a sibset to work with [name]Britton[/name].
[name]LOVE[/name] [name]Britton[/name]! I’ve loved it for probably a decade now… I think it’s such a handsome boys’ name! I love the nn [name]Brit[/name]/[name]Britt[/name] for a boy. I love unisex names on boys, but I always have. [name]Britton[/name] doesn’t sound feminine to me in the slightest, although I have heard it used more on girls lately…
Oh, I fell in love with [name]Britton[/name] a long time ago, but never had the nerve to use it (if it had been a family name, though, it would’ve been a slam dunk). I always thought of it as a girl’s name, not only b/c of the [name]Brittany[/name] association, but b/c the nickname “[name]Brit[/name]” seemed more feminine to me. However, that being said, I never really hear the name on either sex so there’s no reason it can’t be worn well on a boy. I think this is one of those true androgynous names, I love it either way.
I say don’t bury it in the middle name slot… use it as a first name for either boy or girl.
What would you pair this name with sibset and middle name wise? For both boy and girl?? Thats the trickiest part of the name finding names that go with it!! It’s also typically NMS but being a family name it’s a name thats special obvious!! Someone help with a sibset for DD or DS [name]Britton[/name]!! Everybody seems divided girl or boy but everyone agrees the [name]Brittany[/name] teasing potential is there for a boy. And in all honesty boyish names on boyish girls don’t work. Boyish names on feminine girls sometimes do. This makes me wonder whether DD [name]Britton[/name] would be ok. HELP!!!
I have known both a little boy [name]Britton[/name] and a little girl, and it fit the girl better, to me, for the reasons above. I mean this very sweetly, I’m a teacher so I loved this (they were not my students but around me), but they were both, shall we say, bookish, and I think for [name]Britton[/name] the girl, her strong name was an asset, but for [name]Britton[/name] the boy, the somewhat bookish (forget feminine, it just doesn’t necessarily sound like an athlete) qualities were more a source for additional teasing. Which is not to say a different kid couldn’t pull it off, or even that it was a huge part of the teasing (I believe kids tease less about names than they used to, but it is still around).
Hmm, siblings for a girl [name]Britton[/name]…well I think the advantage of putting this on a girl is you can use almost any masculine name as long as it’s pretty clearly masculine. With a boy [name]Britton[/name], you’d need to go soft surnames with all of them to fit. But with a girl [name]Britton[/name], you probably do want other strong-ish names. I can see [name]Harper[/name] and [name]Reese[/name] fitting, but if those aren’t to your liking, hmm.
[name]Agnes[/name] (different, but old enough to sound strong, and not ending in a, probably helps it. [name]May[/name] be too modern v old, and clash…)
[name]Avery[/name]
[name]Bellamy[/name] (if you don’t mind the alliteration)
[name]Constance[/name] (no idea why I think this works, just that it might?)
[name]Delaney[/name]
[name]Edith[/name] (see [name]Agnes[/name])
[name]Ellery[/name]
[name]Florence[/name] (see [name]Constance[/name]. Think it’s the strong ending)
Gates
[name]Hadley[/name]
[name]Hartley[/name]
[name]Harley[/name]
[name]Ingrid[/name] (totally different, but I think because [name]Britta[/name] is a Scandinavian name?)
[name]Liv[/name] (see reasoning above)
[name]Maren[/name] (both end in N, but I think in this case it’s OK)
[name]Tamsin[/name] (see above)
[name]Yarrow[/name]
Yates
I’m drawing blanks here after this, but hopefully this gets you started.
In a sibset with [name]Britton[/name] for a boy, I’d go for very feminine names for the sisters and very masculine names for the brothers. In a sibset of (for example) [name]Amelia[/name], [name]Isabella[/name], [name]Olivia[/name], [name]William[/name] and [name]Britton[/name], it’s very obvious (to me, at least!) that [name]Britton[/name] is a boy, because the girls names are distinctly girly. For middle names, something masculine again to reinforce that it’s a boys name. Examples: [name]Britton[/name] [name]James[/name], [name]Britton[/name] [name]Arthur[/name], [name]Britton[/name] [name]Oliver[/name], [name]Britton[/name] [name]Scott[/name], [name]Britton[/name] [name]Maxwell[/name].
I disagree with this to some extent. I think [name]Britton[/name] is okay for a boy and find it preferable over a girl. There is teasing potential for [name]Brittany[/name], but that could be true of any name that can be “feminized”. I also agree that you could go with more feminine names for any future girls. But where I disagree is going with more masculine names for the brothers. To me this sets the first boy up more to be assumed to be a girl when looking at names because it is more unisex.
I love [name]Britton[/name], we are considering it for one of our little girls, but I can see it working as a boys name too. There is a family on TV, I think its called Qunits by Surprise but not entirely sure and their daughter’s names is [name]Britton[/name], but another of their daughter’s names is [name]Eliot[/name] so they toe the unisex line as it is. I think I would pair it with something very feminine for a girl or very masculine for a boy to balance out the unisex qualities that it has.
I am 28 & I went to college with a [name]Britton[/name], male. He was very awesome & we all called him [name]Britt[/name] or [name]Britton[/name]. I [name]DO[/name] think it could work for a girl, too. It is flexable, like [name]Taylor[/name] or [name]Jordan[/name]. Good luck!
I think you could go with either unisex or masculine names for brothers really, but that’s because I see [name]Britton[/name] as very masculine myself I suppose. More masculine sibling names would be my personal preference.
