So, this is a hypothetical brother as my DH and I do not have any children yet. DH and I agree strongly that our first son will be named [name_m]Cormac[/name_m]. It’s just about the only name he’s ever expressed a very strong liking for and definitely the only one he’s really liked that I also liked. The trouble is, we can’t come up with any other boys’ names we both like. He can barely come up with any he likes at all. So my question to all of you berries is: What would you name a brother for [name_m]Cormac[/name_m]?
[name_m]Just[/name_m] to give you an idea of our styles, the only other name he has really, really liked is [name_m]Silas[/name_m], which I associate a little too much with the Amish in our area to get on board with. I particularly like [name_u]August[/name_u] (“That’s a girl’s name!” [name_m]Don[/name_m]'t even get me started.), [name_m]Archer[/name_m] (just “No.”), [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] (“Too common”), [name_m]Ivo[/name_m] (“Too weird.”), [name_m]Seamus[/name_m] (“Too Irish-themed with [name_m]Cormac[/name_m].”), and [name_u]James[/name_u] (“Too common”), but he doesn’t like any of them.
My first thought was [name_m]Cormac[/name_m] and [name_m]Riordan[/name_m], but I’d love [name_u]Rory[/name_u]/ [name_m]Ruaridh[/name_m], too.

I feel like [name_m]Dashiell[/name_m] has old time charm like [name_u]August[/name_u], but no girly vibe at all.
[name_m]Lachlan[/name_m] is trendy sounding and Scottish, but still quite uncommon.

I just realized how challenging it can be to start making picks for sibsets when it’s all hypothetical, but still very probable. My SO and I did that last week, and when there’s nothing absolutely definite, no child with a personality to base ideas for future kids off, it can be hard to pinpoint what vibe to go for.
Oooh I’ve never heard of [name_m]Riordan[/name_m]–I really like it! I will have to share a lot of these with DH and report back–my favorites here are [name_m]Dashiell[/name_m], [name_u]Grey[/name_u], [name_m]Bertram[/name_m], and [name_m]Fletcher[/name_m] so hopefully he likes at least one of those. Thank you! We are trying to stay away from names that all share a similar ethnic origin, because we are total “mutts” ourselves and our kids will be even more so. The names you mentioned seem to really strike a nice balance.
It is so challenging and probably silly to be talking about this in such depth now, but we are hoping to start trying soon and it’s definitely at the forefront of my mind. It is hard without a child to base ideas off of, but very fun to imagine one. Good luck to you and your SO too.
