I have a DS named [name]Josiah[/name] and am currently in love with the name [name]Theodore[/name] for another son. [name]Do[/name] you think they are too stylistically different though? He would probably go by ‘[name]Theo[/name]’. My concern is that [name]Josiah[/name] is so obviously biblical (with the whole ‘iah’ ending) that [name]Theodore[/name] would seem out of place.
(Of course, ‘[name]Theo[/name]’ means God, but the two names just have a different feel to me)
If you don’t think they match (or if you don’t share my love of [name]Theodore[/name]!) can you think of any other boy’s names that might go well with [name]Josiah[/name]? Last name is 2 syllables, very common and lacking in varied intonation (think ‘[name]Smith[/name]’), so can take quite a long or unusual name. I tend to like classic but not overused names.
I love [name]Theodore[/name], and I don’t think it would sound too awkward with [name]Josiah[/name]. I also have a brother named [name]Josiah[/name], and my other brother’s names are [name]Elijah[/name], [name]James[/name], and [name]Stephen[/name]. [name]Elijah[/name] was closest to him in age and those two names sound great together. I know another [name]Josiah[/name] with a brother [name]Eli[/name], And one with brothers [name]Josh[/name] (which I do not think works), and [name]Daniel[/name].
I also like:
[name]Titus[/name]
[name]Ezra[/name]
[name]Ezekiel[/name]
[name]Cyrus[/name]
[name]Gideon[/name]
I love, love, love [name]Theodore[/name], and also don’t think it’s too out of place with [name]Josiah[/name]. That said, if you’re still bothered by the differences in style, here are some more ideas (I love the [name]Gideon[/name] suggestion):
[name]Abraham[/name]
[name]Abram[/name]
[name]Alden[/name] (Colonial name, like [name]Josiah[/name])
[name]Micah[/name]
[name]Phineas[/name] (Biblical and Colonial)
[name]Samson[/name]
[name]Solomon[/name]
[name]Thaddeus[/name]
Thanks for the replies - glad to see there are others who share my love of [name]Theodore[/name]! It’s still my no.1 pick, despite my concerns.
I also really like [name]Eli[/name] and [name]Phineas[/name] as suggested - unfortunately [name]Phineas[/name] clashes with our last name in terms of sound. [name]Micah[/name] and [name]Elijah[/name] are great too. Things to ponder!
I love [name]Theodore[/name], too! I think it could work with [name]Josiah[/name], but I [name]LOVE[/name] the suggestions of [name]Gideon[/name] and [name]Ezekiel[/name]. I think either of those would be amazing. I know a [name]Josiah[/name] who’s siblings are [name]Nickolai[/name] and [name]Ashley[/name].
I too think [name]Theodore[/name] and [name]Josiah[/name] work just great together. However, as [name]Jill[/name] points out, [name]Josiah[/name] is both Biblical and Colonial, so maybe you can look at other selections that have both those things going on. Here’s the Colonial boys’ list from nameberry, with mostly biblical choices: Colonial Names for Boys | 1700s Names | Nameberry
