We’re at a standstill on a name for our boy! Older sister is [name_f]Oriana[/name_f] [name_f]Caitlyn[/name_f]. We have been going back and forth between [name_m]Calvin[/name_m] and [name_m]Conrad[/name_m], MN [name_m]Joseph[/name_m] (family name, non negotiable) but neither is quite right. I really like [name_m]Conrad[/name_m] but the lack of a good nickname bugs me and husband isn’t too into it. Any ideas? ? Really like to stay out of the top 200, at least, but husband isn’t willing to be too creative. I will truly appreciate your ideas, we’ve hit a wall!
[name_m]Crane[/name_m], [name_m]Cyrus[/name_m], [name_m]Cillian[/name_m], [name_u]Cade[/name_u], [name_m]Cedric[/name_m], [name_m]Cullen[/name_m], [name_m]Clark[/name_m], [name_m]Callum[/name_m], [name_u]Camden[/name_u], [name_u]Cameron[/name_u], [name_m]Connor[/name_m]/[name_u]Conner[/name_u], [name_m]Colin[/name_m]
Arthurian name [name_u]Corbin[/name_u] has some similarities to [name_m]Conrad[/name_m] and [name_m]Calvin[/name_m], with nicknames [name_u]Corby[/name_u], [name_u]Cory[/name_u] and [name_m]Ben[/name_m].
I also like the sound of [name_m]Arthur[/name_m] itself — it’s a medieval name, like [name_f]Oriana[/name_f], but just outside the top 200, so still modern and wearable. [name_f]Oriana[/name_f] and [name_m]Arthur[/name_m] make a nice pair.
Other ideas pulled from Medieval origins and the top names of the 1920s and '30s (when [name_m]Calvin[/name_m] and [name_m]Conrad[/name_m] peaked):
[name_u]Alton[/name_u]
[name_m]Byron[/name_m]
[name_u]Carlisle[/name_u]
[name_m]Clifton[/name_m]
[name_m]Edwin[/name_m]
[name_m]Harvey[/name_m]
[name_m]Irving[/name_m]
[name_m]Kelvin[/name_m]
[name_u]Leland[/name_u]
[name_m]Leroy[/name_m]
[name_m]Marvin[/name_m]
[name_m]Maxfield[/name_m]
[name_m]Orville[/name_m]
[name_m]Walden[/name_m]
[name_m]Conrad[/name_m] [name_m]Joseph[/name_m] and [name_m]Calvin[/name_m] [name_m]Joseph[/name_m] both flow really well.
Are we stuck on a C? There are lots of great C names above!
[name_m]Clayton[/name_m] [name_m]Joseph[/name_m]
[name_m]Cormac[/name_m] [name_m]Joseph[/name_m]
[name_u]Chase[/name_u] [name_m]Joseph[/name_m]
Thanks all!
Ceryle
you hit on my theme exactly. Was looking at ancient/germanic /latin names. I love the history and weight of Oriana. You also list one of our only other names in contention, Corbin. I like it but the nickname, Cory, is too close to our nickname for my Dd, Ori. To me Corby is just a little too clunky.
We’re not stuck with C names and actually, the only other name we both like is Desmond. It’s out of top 200 and has a great nickname (Des/Desi). However it’s also not within my criteria above, since it’s an Irish place name without the same historical weight (although it’s got Desmond Tutu, so that’s something). Maybe I’ve boxed myself in a corner with that criteria though… I mean, does anyone sit around thinking about the meaning of their name regularly?
I like Alton, Byron, Clifton and Cyrus, I’ll have to give them a little more thought too… Cullen/Callum have been on our list at different times but husband rejected.
[name_f]Oriana[/name_f] is lovely and of your options, I prefer [name_m]Calvin[/name_m] over [name_m]Conrad[/name_m] and [name_u]Corbin[/name_u] and [name_m]Desmond[/name_m] over [name_m]Calvin[/name_m] by a long shot.
I love medieval names and this site Names — Dictionary of Medieval Names from European Sources is amazing. It’s a Dictionary of Medieval Names from European Sources and it is the fruit of extensive research by scholars from universities across the world, diggind deep to find new names and their etymological origins.
With [name_f]Oriana[/name_f] I like some medieval names like [name_m]Alaric[/name_m], [name_m]Alban[/name_m] nn [name_m]Albie[/name_m], [name_m]Albert[/name_m], [name_m]Alfred[/name_m], [name_m]Amadeus[/name_m], [name_m]Basil[/name_m], [name_m]Bernard[/name_m], [name_m]Cosmo[/name_m], [name_m]Crispin[/name_m], [name_m]Cyprian[/name_m], [name_m]Cyril[/name_m], [name_m]Damian[/name_m], [name_m]Darwin[/name_m] (I [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] this name), [name_m]Edwin[/name_m], [name_m]Eustace[/name_m], [name_m]Eugene[/name_m], [name_m]Everard[/name_m], [name_m]Fabian[/name_m], [name_m]Florin[/name_m], [name_m]Ingram[/name_m], [name_m]Ivo[/name_m], [name_m]Joachim[/name_m], [name_m]Jonas[/name_m], [name_m]Julian[/name_m], [name_m]Julius[/name_m], [name_m]Leander[/name_m], [name_m]Leopold[/name_m], [name_m]Magnus[/name_m], [name_m]Marius[/name_m], [name_m]Moses[/name_m], [name_u]Noel[/name_u], [name_m]Norman[/name_m], [name_m]Otto[/name_m], Petrus, [name_m]Pascal[/name_m], [name_m]Prosper[/name_m], [name_m]Quentin[/name_m], [name_m]Rocco[/name_m], [name_m]Roman[/name_m], [name_m]Roland[/name_m], [name_m]Rufus[/name_m], [name_m]Rupert[/name_m], [name_m]Simon[/name_m], [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m], [name_m]Sylvester[/name_m], [name_m]Thomas[/name_m], [name_m]Timothy[/name_m], [name_m]Tobias[/name_m], [name_u]Urban[/name_u], [name_m]Vincent[/name_m], [name_m]Victor[/name_m], Valens, [name_m]Wolf[/name_m], Wolfram, [name_m]Wilfred[/name_m]…
