Brother for Thor

[name]Hi[/name] everyone,

I’ve long been a fan of nameberry, but this is the first time I’ve posted. My husband and I named our son (now one year old) Thorston [name]Thomas[/name] to honor my husband’s Swedish heritage and my maiden name, respectively. We mostly just call him [name]Thor[/name], and it suits him perfectly. Other people seem to love it or hate it, but I can’t imagine him named anything else!

The only challenge is that now we’re thinking about trying for #2. We have plenty of girls names that we like but we can’t think of a boy’s name that can stand up to the Thunder God! “[name]Carl[/name]” or “Byerly” will probably be the middle name for family considerations. As you can probably tell, we like unusual names (preferably out of the top 100 and definitely out of the top 10!), especially since our last name is very common. Something Nordic to go with Thorston would be a plus but isn’t a requirement. Thanks in advance!

[name]Love[/name] your sons name and love his nickname more  I’ve looked a lot into Norse names for my own baby combos and list so I hope i can help!

[name]How[/name] about:

Frode – froh-deh – on my list
[name]Vidar[/name] – one my husband wanted
[name]Jesper[/name]
[name]Aksel[/name]/[name]Axel[/name]
[name]Ari[/name]
[name]Bjorn[/name]
[name]Edvin[/name]
[name]Gunnar[/name]
[name]Konrad[/name]
Lukian
[name]Soren[/name]
[name]Vilhelm[/name]
[name]Roderik[/name]
[name]Viktor[/name]
Finnur
[name]Haakon[/name]
[name]Anders[/name]
[name]Konstantin[/name]
Zefyr
[name]Frey[/name]
Rorik
Loffe
[name]Loki[/name] – I’m using this one and [name]Loki[/name] often traveled with [name]Thor[/name] in the mythology
Merit
Olander
Torell

[name]Do[/name] you like any of those are they too much Nordic?

I’m guessing you want something most people will recognise as Nordic? Otherwise I would suggest Alvarin which sounds anything but Nordic.
Ansgar, [name]Audun[/name], Eivind, Eimund, Ellef, Elling, Eyolv, Ingmund, [name]Sigmund[/name], [name]Olav[/name]/Olaus, [name]Sindri[/name], [name]Storm[/name], Trygg, Amund.
[name]Sigmund[/name] [name]Carl[/name] would be nice. ([name]Sigmund[/name] is my grandfather’s name ^^)

I [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Thor[/name]/Thorston! :). I see your dilemma, though…it’s a tough big brother name to live up to! [name]How[/name] about:

[name]Viggo[/name]
[name]Hugo[/name]
[name]Jett[/name] (a character from my book, so I’m partial)
[name]Hero[/name] too much combined with brother [name]Thor[/name]? I like it, though!
Gambit
[name]Rocket[/name]
[name]Mungo[/name]
[name]Dane[/name]
[name]Django[/name]
[name]Blaze[/name]
[name]Bear[/name]
[name]Lief[/name]
[name]Xander[/name]/[name]Zander[/name]
Cage
[name]Gage[/name]
[name]Archer[/name]

Obviously, some of those are “on the fringe” of what the majority of people would consider; but they’re so far as to jump immediately to [name]Odin[/name] or [name]Loki[/name]. ;-). GL to you!

Ooh, so many good suggestions! Dantea, I love [name]Loki[/name]! The “i” at the end gives it a very happy-go-lucky feel to me. But my husband’s on the fence with it it. We both like [name]Axel[/name] and [name]Gunnar[/name]. We’ve sort of thought about [name]Axel[/name] before, but I was worried it was too closely associated with [name]Axl[/name] [name]Rose[/name]. But it’s growing on me!
[name]Sigmund[/name] is a really nice throwback option too, and you get the adorable (and Swedish!) nickname [name]Sig[/name]. I like [name]Viggo[/name] and [name]Archer[/name] too. [name]Hero[/name] is actually on my girl’s list after the Shakespearean character!
Thank you for all the great options!

I think [name]Axel[/name] goes great with [name]Thor[/name].
more ideas-
[name]Stellen[/name]
[name]Ingo[/name]
[name]Rex[/name]
[name]Dante[/name]
[name]Jago[/name]

I would stay away from [name]Loki[/name] since you already have [name]Thor[/name]. The character [name]Loki[/name] in Norse mythology he definitely doesn’t live up to the same standard that [name]Thor[/name] does. Plus in the comic books [name]Thor[/name] and [name]Loki[/name] are brothers that don’t get along.

I think [name]Axel[/name] is a strong name that could work for you (but I’m partial as my son’s mn is [name]Axel[/name]). I don’t think it is too strongly associated with [name]Axl[/name] [name]Rose[/name] since it is rising in popularity a bit.

Other Swedish names to consider:
[name]Sven[/name]
[name]Leif[/name]
[name]Gustav[/name] (There are some strong Swedish namesakes here!)
Björn
[name]Oskar[/name]
[name]Viktor[/name]
[name]Arvid[/name]
Klas
[name]Lukas[/name]

Good luck!

[name]Maxim[/name]
[name]Maksim[/name]
[name]Zeus[/name]
[name]Ulysses[/name]
[name]Cassius[/name]
[name]Leif[/name]
[name]Arrick[/name]
[name]Arrow[/name]
[name]Blaze[/name]
[name]Cliff[/name]
[name]Hector[/name]
[name]Lazarus[/name]
[name]Mortimer[/name]
Oleander
[name]Severin[/name]
[name]Talon[/name]
[name]Viggo[/name]
[name]Hugo[/name]
[name]Otto[/name]

[name]Loki[/name] is not the nicest god to be named after… but it’s a cool name. Some other gods:
Balder
Brage/Bragi
[name]Vidar[/name]
[name]Odin[/name]

I also love the names Trym, Vetle and Eskil, but they’re norwegian not swedish.

[name]Zeus[/name] would be a cool name … it’s not Nordic, but still a God  I prefer [name]Poseidon[/name] to [name]Zeus[/name] though, so there’s another option.

The only Nordic name I know and love is [name]Bo[/name] <3 The first name that came to my mind, before fully reading the post, is Ryder <3

Personally I’d avoid another god-name, to avoid that theme…
Other strong names:
I like [name]Ambrosius[/name] (immortal), [name]Ambrosius[/name] [name]Carl[/name].
Or what about [name]Alberik[/name] (blond ruler), [name]Alberik[/name] Byerly?
I also like [name]Blasius[/name], cool nn [name]Blaise[/name], but it means ‘stutters’ apparently.
Some websites say it means ‘royal’ though. [name]Blasius[/name] Byerly or [name]Blasius[/name] [name]Carl[/name].
Good luck!

Thanks for all the suggestions! Yes, as cute I as I think the sound is, [name]Loki[/name] is definitely out. From what we’ve read, he’s sort of a trickster god, which just doesn’t pair well with the powerful [name]Thor[/name]. [name]Gunnar[/name], [name]Axel[/name], and [name]Sig[/name] are all in contention, and I think probably “[name]Carl[/name]” for the middle name. We chose “[name]Thomas[/name]” for [name]Thor[/name]'s middle name not only because it’s my maiden name but also to give him the more traditional option if he decides [name]Thor[/name] isn’t for him (but I hope not!). So, [name]Carl[/name] is still a family name and would give baby brother the same option since we want to go for the less common first names.
Watch, after all this, we’ll have a bunch of girls…

[name]Axel[/name] is one of my favorites. I’m just not brave enough to use it. :stuck_out_tongue:

Suggestions:

[name]Valdemar[/name] - [name]Val[/name]
[name]Rune[/name]
[name]Bruno[/name]
[name]Magnus[/name]
[name]Henrik[/name]
[name]Ignatius[/name] - [name]Iggy[/name], [name]Nat[/name]
[name]Gunther[/name]

[name]Ragnar[/name]

[name]How[/name] about…

  • [name]Nils[/name]
  • [name]Peder[/name]
  • [name]Leif[/name]
[name]Just[/name] a few Norwegian names that I know of!

I apologize if I have the wrong nationality on this one, but I think it’s correct and I love it: [name]Lars[/name]. I also like a previous suggestion of [name]Bo[/name].

[name]Atlas[/name], [name]Orion[/name], [name]Titus[/name], [name]Cyrus[/name], Zorn (a last name, but good first name), [name]Slater[/name]
