I’ve been crushing on this for a while, and I’m just curious what others think. I love that the rumored meaning is “rejoice” (although BtN says there’s no meaning known, so I don’t know how reliable it is?), and I do quite like [name]Kai[/name], even though it’s become fairly trendy (and even downmarket in some areas). I’m just not sure how well it fits on my list, although I have to say, I feel my boys’ list is pretty eclectic as it is.
Out of the two, which do you prefer? Thoughts on them both? [name]How[/name] does it fit on my list?
I prefer [name]Caius[/name] because I like [name]Kai[/name] too!
[name]Caius[/name] “fits” with [name]Isabelle[/name], [name]Arianne[/name], [name]Olivia[/name], [name]Rachel[/name], [name]Liliana[/name], [name]Charlotte[/name], [name]Eleni[/name], [name]Hannah[/name], [name]Eva[/name], [name]Emmeline[/name], [name]Josephine[/name] and [name]Gwendolyn[/name] on the girls list. I removed [name]Violet[/name] for its similar sound, [name]Charlotte[/name]/[name]Catherine[/name] because they share the same initial and [name]Tess[/name] because it ends in “s”. You can always use these names in the middle spot if you love them.
On the boys list, [name]Caius[/name] would eliminate [name]Caleb[/name] (same initial), [name]Grayson[/name]/[name]Avery[/name]/[name]Bailey[/name] (trendy surnames don’t really go well with classic [name]Roman[/name] names), [name]Charles[/name] (same initial) and [name]Boaz[/name] (s and z endings are similar). That leaves [name]Jack[/name], [name]Asher[/name], [name]Everett[/name] (derived from [name]Everard[/name]) and [name]Samuel[/name].
If any of these issues don’t bother you in the slightest, you can choose whatever name tickles your fancy!
[name]Do[/name] you think [name]Gaius[/name] could get the nn [name]Kai[/name]? I know it’s more of a stretch, but [name]Caius[/name] and [name]Gaius[/name] are so similar. ATM, I am much more fond of [name]Gaius[/name] than [name]Caius[/name], but I do understand the “gay us” thing…
[name]Mischa[/name], meh, most of those don’t bother me, haha. I’m not opposed to alliteration, and I’m sure (at least, at this point) I would use most of those names–especially [name]Caleb[/name], [name]Grayson[/name], [name]Avery[/name], and [name]Boaz[/name]!–before I would use [name]Caius[/name]. [name]Grayson[/name], [name]Avery[/name], and [name]Boaz[/name] honor family in very meaningful ways, and [name]Caleb[/name] is my top choice for a boy, it has been for years.
I’m starting to wonder if they’re not more of MN options, anyway. After I posted this I remembered this novel I had read with a super baddy whose name was [name]Caius[/name], I believe. So, I feel the name is tainted now, it feels quite sinister. [name]Gaius[/name] I still really like, but for the issues brought up (and it’s closeness to [name]Caius[/name]!), I’m not sure about it anymore. If you were to use [name]Gaius[/name] as a MN, what FN would you use? All I can think of is [name]Everett[/name] [name]Gaius[/name] and [name]Declan[/name] [name]Gaius[/name], and I’m not especially fond of [name]Declan[/name] [name]Gaius[/name] (although I love [name]Declan[/name]!), and I’m already quite set on my [name]Everett[/name] combo. [name]Joseph[/name] [name]Gaius[/name]? [name]Zane[/name] [name]Gaius[/name]? I’m not sure I even like either of those…
[name]Just[/name] wanted to say I’ve been crushing on [name]Caius[/name] too! (And “rejoicing” is the only meaning I’ve been able to find, which I also love.) I prefer the crisp C of [name]Caius[/name] to the G of [name]Gaius[/name], as well as avoiding [name]Gaius[/name]'s potential “gay” or “guy” teasing or associations. With [name]Gaius[/name], though, I do like the fact that it’s the version used in the [name]New[/name] Testament (3 [name]John[/name] was written to [name]Gaius[/name].)
After having followed Javad’s naming journey for months, I also love Caian, apparently a rare Welsh form of [name]Cai[/name] or [name]Caius[/name]. [name]Caio[/name], another Welsh variant, is cool too.
If you’re leaning toward [name]Gaius[/name] as a middle, I think I like it with something sorta long and regal–[name]Alexander[/name] [name]Gaius[/name], [name]Evander[/name] [name]Gaius[/name], [name]Fernando[/name] [name]Gaius[/name]–that kind of thing. (Hmm, I just noticed that each of my examples contains the syllable AN–interesting. [name]How[/name] about [name]Orlando[/name], [name]Lucian[/name], [name]Sebastian[/name]…?) [name]Everett[/name] [name]Gaius[/name], which you were toying with above, is probably the one I’d choose from the boys’ names in your signature.
Thanks for your input! Och, I love the small books by [name]John[/name] toward the end of the [name]New[/name] Testament. I’ve particularly loved 2 [name]John[/name] in the past, I’ll have to go and reread 3 [name]John[/name] now. The connection to the Bible makes me love [name]Gaius[/name] all the more. And och, I adore [name]Sebastian[/name] [name]Gaius[/name]! I’ve been toying with adding [name]Sebastian[/name] to my long list–it’s such an unexpected classic, and I love the ties to Twelfth [name]Night[/name] (and I adore the nns [name]Seb[/name] and [name]Ash[/name]!).
Since you also like [name]Kai[/name] I think [name]Caius[/name] is better. [name]Caius[/name] nn [name]Kai[/name]/[name]Cai[/name] would be cool.
If this helps: the [name]German[/name] baby site baby-vorname.de lists the meaning of [name]Caius[/name] as “messenger of joy”.
I’d consider that [name]Caius[/name] meaning something joyful would be a safe bet.
You’re welcome! [name]Sebastian[/name] [name]Gaius[/name] is pretty smashing, if I do say so myself. I like how the sound of the S’s at the beginning of [name]Sebastian[/name] and end of [name]Gaius[/name] gives the combo a feeling of completeness.
Hadn’t thought of the nn [name]Ash[/name] for [name]Sebastian[/name]–very cool.
