Calliope/Kalliope

[name_f]Calliope[/name_f]/[name_f]Kalliope[/name_f] was brought to my attention after a television host named her daughter [name_f]Alexandra[/name_f] [name_f]Kalliope[/name_f]. I’ve seen it on television characters like [name_f]Callie[/name_f] Torres before, but it didn’t really interest me until it was used on an actual person. It’s not usable for me, but I’m interested in hearing what people think of it.

What are your thoughts on [name_f]Calliope[/name_f]/[name_f]Kalliope[/name_f]?
Would you assume a [name_f]Calliope[/name_f]/[name_f]Kalliope[/name_f] was Greek?

I love [name_f]Calliope[/name_f]! (And [name_f]Alexandra[/name_f] [name_f]Kalliope[/name_f] is one of my all-time favorite celeb baby names.) [name_f]Callie[/name_f] is a super-cute nickname, and I really the the musical, mythological, and saint associations. I think I’d probably assume a [name_f]Kalliope[/name_f]/Kalliopi was Greek at first glance, just because the K spellings are more authentically Greek, but I prefer the C spelling myself and wouldn’t make any assumptions about nationality/heritage if the name was spelled [name_f]Calliope[/name_f]. (The aforementioned [name_f]Calliope[/name_f] “[name_f]Callie[/name_f]” Torres is Hispanic, after all, and it works just fine on her.)

Yes it is Greek. It’s a gorgeous gorgeous name and still very rare yet mainstream so most people do know of it. I think it’s a great name!

I like [name_f]Calliope[/name_f], although I’ve never been entirely sure if I love the sound, but I definitely vastly prefer it to [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] (I do not like how [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] sounds). It’s very beautiful, unusual, and exotic sounding, with some great imagery too. I think of a sweet, gentle girl, who will always fight for what she thinks is right, and I get a sort of Greek princess kind of vibe. I also love the meaning, and the link to the Muses in Greek mythology. It’s difficult to say if I’d assume it’s Greek, since I already know it is, but I think, like [name_f]Penelope[/name_f], it can easily suit someone who isn’t Greek or doesn’t have Greek heritage. I’m also not sure which spelling I prefer. On the one hand [name_f]Calliope[/name_f] looks softer and maybe more elegant, but I like that [name_f]Kalliope[/name_f] looks more authentic, and a bit more strong and fierce.

Your comments on [name_f]Calliope[/name_f]/[name_f]Kalliope[/name_f] are making me want to add it to my list! If only I didn’t have so many [name_m]Al[/name_m]/-al names that I loved…

[name_f]Calliope[/name_f] is so pretty!

I love [name_u]Grey[/name_u]'s Anatomy and I think every character on the show has a beautiful name - except for a few. I really like [name_f]Callie[/name_f]/[name_f]Calliope[/name_f]. I think it suits the character really well and it shows so clearly how such an unusual name can be totally practical for every day life. I think if [name_f]Callie[/name_f] on [name_u]Grey[/name_u]'s can rock it, then it’s a sweet name and you should definitely add [name_f]Calliope[/name_f] to your list!

I honestly really don’t like K/[name_f]Calliope[/name_f], though I don’t mind [name_f]Callie[/name_f]. I have a tenancy to dislike names like [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] and [name_f]Calliope[/name_f], I just don’t like the way it sounds. I do like that fact that it sounds so Greek, I have an unexplainable love for Greek names.

I’ve loved the name [name_f]Calliope[/name_f] (I prefer the C-spelling) since I read one of [name_u]Ellis[/name_u] Peters’ mysteries back in the late '70s (Never Pick Up Hitchhikers!) that featured a [name_f]Calliope[/name_f]-known-as-[name_f]Callie[/name_f].

I like [name_f]Calliope[/name_f] (prefer this spelling), but not [name_f]Callie[/name_f] ([name_f]Calla[/name_f] is a beautiful alternative, but I feel that [name_f]Callie[/name_f] would be hard to break out of) - I wouldn’t assume that a [name_f]Calliope[/name_f] was Greek, since it has a similar feel to [name_u]Calypso[/name_u] (of whom I have met several and none of them were Greek).

I [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] [name_f]Kalliope[/name_f]. I much prefer the K spelling, makes it much more authentic I think. Either obviously is 100 percent ok.
