Calliope, one of my yg leaders has a daughter with this name as well
ya ever heard of the instrument calliope? Does that have something to do with the pronunciation?
I saw on the nameberry database that it was a merry-go-round instrument
yep.
I love the name though
in the uk here and I’ve always pronounced it kuh-LEE-uh-pee
@bellerose you’re the only greek person that I know of on this site not to make any assumptions, but how is it typically pronounced where you live (if you know anyone with the name?). Again, this is not to assume anything about you, I just want to know how someone from greece would pronounce it.
My aunt is [name_f]Calliope[/name_f] and she pronounces it Cah-lee-OH-pee (Greek family).
I used to pronounce it [name_f]Callie[/name_f]-ope but just recently realized that the correct way is ka-LYE-o-pee and pronounce it that way now. I really want to like the authentic pronunciation, but I can’t get myself to see it as pretty- I only recently realized the beauty of the full American pronunciation.
UK here, also in the cah-lee-OH-pee camp. Had no idea there were other ways to pronounce it!
Never encountered this name before I joined this site, and I pronounced it the same way as you till curiosity made me follow the link and find it’s real pronunciation. I now say it the Greek way as I prefer that over the American pronunciation, but overall, I liked it way more when I thought it was KA-lee-op. I’m not fond of the -pee ending at all lol
Hey
Here in Greece we pronounce it cah-lee-OH-pee. I have known many of them in the past. Most go by Popi.
In the US, definitely ku-LYE-oh-pee
My niece is [name_f]Calliope[/name_f] (Kuh-LYE-oh-pee). We’re in the US.
I’ve never met anyone with this name, so for me it could go either way. But to be honest, I think most people in my area would say [name_f]Callie[/name_f]-ope unless corrected.
I would pronounce it cah-lee-OH-pee, but I am from the UK.
I say Kah-lee-oh-pee unless otherwise corrected I think it’s sweet!
I’m from the UK and would pronounce it Kah-lee-OH-pee, but I do have to say it out in my head, it’s not an instinctive pronunciation for me, in the way that other Greek names are.
