Calliope

How would you pronounce [name_f]Calliope[/name_f]? The American way insists it’s Cal-lyo-p ,but a Greek person will pronounce it as Cal-ee-oh-p While neither can be considered ‘wrong’ as such, the internet is awash with people who say it is pronounced as Cal-lyo-pe, which I do find somewhat annoying. I would say Cal-ee-oh-p, simply because it is the original Greek name of the muse. Thoughts?

[name_f]My[/name_f] instinctive pronunciation (which may well be wrong) would be cuh-LIE-oh-pee.

I would pronounce it in what I understand is the Greek way, which is kah-LYO-pee! :slightly_smiling_face:

CAL-lee-oh-pay

The Greek way is actually kah-LYO-pee! If you don’t live in Greece, I’d probably go for the Anglicised kah-LYE-o-pee pronunciation.

I alternate between ka-lee-o-pee (with the lee-o sound sort of smooshed*) and ka-LIE-o-pee depending on the day :person_shrugging:[name_f][/name_f] if I were to meet one, I’d probably ask

[name_f][/name_f]

(*) looking at other comments, I think I probably draw the sound out a bit more than the traditional Greek way

Many Greeks would not agree with you.

I met a girl named this and she pronounced is Kuh-lie-uh-pee. [name_f]Beautiful[/name_f] name

I’m pretty sure @tallemaja is Greek? (@tallemaja correct me of I’m wrong) so she would be familiar with the current Greek pronunciation or at least the Greek pronunciation from the area she is from.

But it’s possible there is more than one correct way to say it in Greek as well.

As for me I would say it kuh-LIE-oh-pee, since I’m not Greek. To me it’s the same as Genevieve. Which is a French name, but it would feel wrong for me as an American to use the zhan-vee-ehv pronunciation. (Even though I think its gorgeous!)

I’m Greek, I think I know how to pronounce my own language. Cal-ee-oh-pee is entirely unnatural to the sounds of Greek, regardless of where in the country you’re from. None of us would say it like that.

Okay. I will accept the Cal-lye-o-p pronunciation. But it isn’t very clear across numerous websites and Call-ee-o-p is listed as an acceptable pronociation, but if most people use the [name_m]Lye[/name_m] pronunciation, I guess it is safest to go with that.
