Cameron for a girl?

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] everyone, my husband and I are having trouble agreeing on a name for our baby girl. We both love [name_u]Cameron[/name_u] but I worry that we may regret it if she is regularly mistaken for a boy. Please let me know your honest opinion of [name_u]Cameron[/name_u] for a girl. Is it unisex or too boyish? We prefer not to change the spelling. Our other option is to settle on a more distinctly girly name that we don’t love as much. Thanks for your help!

I like it  and if you both love it I say definitely go with it!

My suggestions:

  • I know you said you would prefer to not change the spelling but I think [name_u]Kamryn[/name_u] is a more feminine way of spelling the name and last year in the USA there were More girls with the name “[name_u]Kamryn[/name_u]” then there were boys with the spelling and “[name_u]Cameron[/name_u]” was more popular for boys. If you type [name_u]Kamryn[/name_u] in on Google the first things that come up are thing saying it is a girls name and then second things that comes up it [name_u]Kamryn[/name_u] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] [name_u]Beck[/name_u] who is a famous female dancer  But in saying that [name_u]Cameron[/name_u] [name_u]Diaz[/name_u] is a very famous actress who spells her name “[name_u]Cameron[/name_u]” so I think either is fine

  • Make sure you give her a 100% feminine middle name to prevent confusion

example, I would be 100% sure that [name_u]Cameron[/name_u] [name_f]Grace[/name_f], [name_u]Cameron[/name_u] [name_f]Laura[/name_f] and [name_u]Cameron[/name_u] [name_f]Violet[/name_f] were all girls where as i would be unsure of [name_u]Cameron[/name_u] [name_u]Mackenzie[/name_u], [name_u]Cameron[/name_u] [name_u]Taylor[/name_u] and [name_u]Cameron[/name_u] [name_u]Quinn[/name_u]

  • In my opinion [name_u]Cameron[/name_u] also has more feminime nick names like [name_f]Cammie[/name_f], [name_f]Mera[/name_f], [name_f]Amy[/name_f], [name_f]Aira[/name_f] and [name_f]Nora[/name_f]

I like it. I don’t like names that automatically seem like a boy’s name - those where you have to tell everyone she’s a girl before it’s obvious. [name_u]Cameron[/name_u] does not strike me as one of those. And I would go with the original spelling. I’m not a fan of new spellings of traditional names. If you don’t like [name_f]Cami[/name_f], however, I might pick another name. The two female [name_u]Cameron[/name_u]'s I know both ended up being called [name_f]Cami[/name_f].

I think [name_u]Cameron[/name_u] is clearly unisex. Not too boyish. I know one male [name_u]Cameron[/name_u], one female [name_u]Kamryn[/name_u], and one female [name_u]Cameron[/name_u] (who goes by “[name_u]Cam[/name_u]” for short). If I heard “[name_u]Cameron[/name_u]” I wouldn’t assume it was a boy or a girl because it really could be either. Same for “[name_u]Alex[/name_u]” and “[name_u]Taylor[/name_u]”.

I like it, I think it’s fine on a girl. I would pair it with a feminine middle name though to avoid any confusion.

[name_u]Cameron[/name_u] is a boy’s name and it is likely that your daughter will be mistaken for a boy if you name her [name_u]Cameron[/name_u]. I would suggest choosing a girl’s name for your daughter and saving [name_u]Cameron[/name_u] for a son.

[name_u]Cameron[/name_u] makes me think of the House character, even though it was her last name. So, it feels feminine to me. There’s also [name_u]Cameron[/name_u] [name_u]Diaz[/name_u]. I wouldn’t worry about it sounding too masculine.

I think of it as a boys name and would definitely assume she was male if I saw it on paper. It just depends on whether you love it enough to have her put up with a few inconveniences from mistaken gender. I had two girl friends growing up with boy names, and both of them hated being accidentally assigned to the boys locker area, sex ed classes, etc.

I like [name_u]Cameron[/name_u] for a girl. I think of [name_u]Cam[/name_u] [name_m]Janson[/name_m], the kick-butt protagonist in the old children’s book series who is a child detective with a photographic memory

I think she’s called [name_u]Cam[/name_u] because of her photographic memory (camera), but I think it’s a really cool/nice girls name. Give her a very feminine middle just in case. Maybe [name_u]Cameron[/name_u] [name_f]Camille[/name_f] or something with a C so if she feels like she wants something more feminine it will be easy to segway into a “CC” type of nickname?

[name_u]Cameron[/name_u] is one of those names I feel is truly unisex. I know 2 or 3 males and 3 females (with various spellings). A feminine middle would help but there are enough names used on both males and females now in the real world, that people don’t really bat an eye at unisex names.

If you love it, go for it!

Totally usable on a girl. I met one the other day (about 6 years old) and it never even crossed my mind that the name was too masculine.

I know a.Kamryon who is in her 20’s but I see nothing wrong with [name_u]Cameron[/name_u] for a girl. As the others have said it’s one of the true unisex names.

It’s a boy name. You wouldn’t name a boy [name_f]Seraphina[/name_f] would.you?

Thanks everyone for the feedback! Anyone else?

[name_u]Cameron[/name_u] [name_u]Diaz[/name_u] wears it well, go for it! If she has a feminine middle name it’ll balance well.

[name_u]Cameron[/name_u] is one of those rare names that I like nearly equally on both genders. I’ve only met one female [name_u]Cameron[/name_u] (versus 6 or so male Camerons) but it feels truly unisex to me. I’d strongly recommend pairing it with a clearly feminine middle name though.

I personally think it could be very cute, especially with a very feminine middle (ie [name_u]Cameron[/name_u] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]).

I would not change the spelling as I think anything with an added “y” seems distinctly trendy.

I know a girl [name_u]Carson[/name_u] so I dont see why [name_u]Cameron[/name_u] wouldnt be ok

On paper, I would assume [name_u]Cameron[/name_u] was a boy just because the girls I know/knew named [name_u]Cameron[/name_u] spell it differently (2 Camryns and 2 Kamerons). I don’t really like it for a girl but only because spelling it [name_u]Cameron[/name_u] is a boys’ name but spelling it any other way is tacky, but a girls’ name. I would associate any alternate spelling of [name_u]Cameron[/name_u] as feminine though. There’s a girl at my dance studio named [name_u]Camryn[/name_u] who goes exclusively by [name_f]Cami[/name_f].

[name_u]Cameron[/name_u] is very unisex to me, I wouldn’t assume gender one way or the other just by seeing [name_u]Cameron[/name_u] on paper. However- [name_u]Cameron[/name_u] means crooked nose, not sure if that’s a deal breaker for you, but for me it would be.
