Can anyone get on board with Elma?

So we were thinking [name]Isla[/name] [name]Christene[/name] for DD#3–[name]Christene[/name] after my great grandma who I was really close with and who just recently passed away (@ 102 years old!). BUT now, we are LOVING the MN [name]June[/name], but I REALLY wanted to incorporate some part of my great grandma’s name for this LO. Her full name was [name]Elma[/name] [name]Christene[/name]. I’ve never been a huge fan on the name [name]Elma[/name], but it has grown on me recently. What do you all think of it? Or do you have any other ideas on ways to honor her, but still use the name [name]June[/name] as a MN? I’ve thought of [name]Zelma[/name] and [name]Selma[/name] which I actually think I could get on board with–DH may be a harder sell, but was just wondering if anyone has any bright ideas since you all are so talented…

[name]June[/name] is a great middle : D.

I’m afraid [name]Elma[/name]'s rather hard for me to hear still, and I think it might be tough for a little girl to wear. I do think [name]Alma[/name]'s a little more ready for her comeback than [name]Elma[/name], but still way ahead of the curve of names coming back in (maybe that’s a plus though : D). [name]Selma[/name] I think is more accessible because of [name]Selma[/name] Hayek, although still mildly tough. I prefer [name]Selma[/name] to [name]Zelma[/name]. I can also see [name]Ella[/name] or [name]Emma[/name] honoring [name]Elma[/name] - both are hugely in of course if that bothers you, and maybe that’s too much of a stretch. [name]Elsa[/name] is less hugely in style right now, but again too much of a stretch for you? I think [name]Emma[/name], [name]Ella[/name], and [name]Elsa[/name] are all nice names and to me they would work to honor [name]Elma[/name].

What else…[name]Amelia[/name], [name]Emilia[/name], and [name]Emmaline[/name] would all contain all the letters of [name]Elma[/name]. There might be more that do that.

Also I don’t know if it’s your style but [name]Christa[/name] [name]June[/name] is really nice to me and [name]Christa[/name] combines something from [name]Elma[/name] and [name]Christene[/name]. [name]Christina[/name] [name]June[/name] is really pretty too but from what I read here I’d imagine [name]Christina[/name] is “napping” for most people, is it for you? [name]Christiana[/name] [name]June[/name]? [name]Christine[/name] [name]June[/name] is nice but probably a lot of -n.

[name]Hope[/name] that helps : D!

The previous poster had alot of great ideas! I thought i would add that you could giver her a first name starting with [name]El[/name]-, then give her a middle name starting with Ma-, so that her close family and friends could call her [name]Elma[/name], without that being her name. Something like:
[name]Eloise[/name] [name]Matilda[/name]
[name]Elsa[/name] [name]Mae[/name]
[name]Eleanor[/name] [name]Maisie[/name]
[name]Ella[/name] [name]Margaret[/name]
[name]Eliza[/name] [name]Madeleine[/name]
[name]Elise[/name] [name]Magnolia[/name]
[name]Elspeth[/name] [name]Maeve[/name]
[name]Elena[/name] [name]Margo[/name]

anyways, there are endless possibilities and i think the idea of any of those names listed above with the nn [name]Elma[/name] could be really cute - keeping the name “up to date”, while still honoring someone you love! Best of both worlds!

What about [name]Isla[/name] [name]Maris[/name] (Ma from [name]Elma[/name] and Is from [name]Christene[/name])? Eye-la mariss. Or [name]Isla[/name] [name]Mariel[/name] (Ma and [name]El[/name] from [name]Elma[/name] but sadly nothing from [name]Christene[/name]). I prefer [name]Alma[/name] to [name]Elma[/name] but [name]Elma[/name] certainly has that vintage quality that I love.

What about 2 middle names?

[name]Christiana[/name] [name]Elma[/name] [name]June[/name] Lastname ([name]Christy[/name]/[name]Ana[/name]/[name]Elma[/name]/[name]Junie[/name])

[name]Elma[/name] is from [name]Wilhelmina[/name], which has a ton of variations:
[name]Billa[/name], [name]Billee[/name], [name]Billey[/name], [name]Billie[/name], [name]Billy[/name], [name]Ellma[/name], [name]Elma[/name], Guglielma, Guillelmina, Guillelmine, Guillema, Guillemette, Guillemine, [name]Helma[/name], Helmina, Felmine, Helminette, [name]Min[/name], [name]Mina[/name], [name]Minna[/name], [name]Minnie[/name], [name]Minny[/name], [name]Valma[/name], [name]Velma[/name], [name]Vilhelmina[/name], Villhelmina, Villhelmine, [name]Vilma[/name], Wileen, [name]Willene[/name], [name]Wilhelmine[/name], [name]Willa[/name], [name]Willabella[/name], [name]Willabelle[/name], [name]Willamina[/name], [name]Willamine[/name], [name]Willeen[/name], [name]Willene[/name], [name]Willemina[/name], [name]Willetta[/name], [name]Willette[/name], [name]Williamina[/name], [name]Willie[/name], [name]Williebelle[/name], [name]Wilmette[/name], [name]Willmina[/name], [name]Willmine[/name], [name]Willy[/name], [name]Willybella[/name], [name]Wilma[/name], [name]Wilmette[/name], [name]Wilmina[/name], [name]Wilna[/name] and [name]Wylma[/name].

[name]Isla[/name] [name]Cristine[/name] ([name]Mina[/name])
[name]Velma[/name] [name]June[/name] ([name]Vivi[/name])
[name]Christina[/name] [name]Willa[/name] ([name]Willa[/name])
[name]Willette[/name] [name]June[/name] ([name]Juni[/name], [name]Willa[/name])

WOW–Thanks so much! I have A LOT to think about!..a good and bad thing, I guess! (esp for DH) I’m just so all over the place because I love the FN [name]Isla[/name] and the MN [name]June[/name], but I really want to honor my great grandma because I just loved her so…If I didn’t have a [name]Mae[/name] I think we would for sure go with [name]June[/name] [name]Christa[/name] or something along those lines, but…[name]Do[/name] you think [name]Isla[/name] is too much of a stretch to honor [name]Elma[/name]? I get some of the same feel with that (just a little daintier) but I just don’t know if I’m trying too hard…I just don’t want to name her something and then down the line wish I would have done it differently. Thanks again for all the input–you guys are the BEST!!!..and keep it coming!

I a word – no.

That should be “In a word, no.”

Why not [name]Isla[/name] [name]June[/name] [name]Christene[/name]?

[name]Hi[/name], I think [name]Isla[/name] is a beautiful first name, and I think two middle names would be a great solution, using your loved grandmother’s name (either one!) and your favourite [name]June[/name] as well! [name]Elma[/name] is very unusual at the moment, but can easily be nicknamed [name]Ella[/name] etc if you wanted to use it as a first name, but have a mainstream option. Best wishes!

I have to dissent, and ask why not [name]Elma[/name]? It’s soft and feminine, but not insubstantial - just like [name]Isla[/name], actually. Yes, it’s very unusual, but it shares sounds with so many popular names - [name]Emma[/name] and [name]Amelia[/name], [name]Ella[/name] and [name]Eleanor[/name] et cetera - that I think it’s very accessible. Plus, the nickname options of [name]Elle[/name], [name]Ella[/name] and [name]Ellie[/name] do allow more conformity if she should ever feel less confident about her name.

I saw it written down recently (I can’t quite remember where, I’ve got a feeling it was a colour of nail polish or lipstick or the like) and thought how lovely it was. [name]Elma[/name] [name]June[/name] would be a beautiful, vintage choice.

[name]Auburn[/name]

[name]Elma[/name] is just okay to me, but I do love [name]Alma[/name], and they are so close in variation. [name]Alma[/name] just seems more feminine and lovely a name. When I see [name]Elmo[/name] I do slightly think of [name]Elmo[/name] from [name]Sesame[/name] [name]Street[/name]. I agree [name]Isla[/name] is a beautiful name too. Good [name]Luck[/name].

I can absolutely get on board with [name]Elma[/name]. (and even more so with [name]Alma[/name] and [name]Selma[/name])
I think [name]Isla[/name] is way too much of a stretch to honor [name]Elma[/name] though.

I agree with [name]Auburn[/name]. I see no reason not to use [name]Elma[/name]. When I first saw your thread title I wasn’t sure about it, but considering how special the connection is I starting thinking about it more. [name]Ella[/name], [name]Emma[/name], [name]Isla[/name], [name]Ellie[/name], even [name]Emily[/name] are all very similar, so why not [name]Elma[/name]? It’s a little different, but not much. [name]Just[/name] a smoosh of [name]Ella[/name] and [name]Emma[/name], really. Surely she’ll have friends with similar names so she will fit in, but stand out. That’s always the goal, right?

You mentioned picking a name and then wishing you had done it differently in the future. I don’t think that [name]Isla[/name] is necessarily too much of a stretch, they’re pretty similar. But (personally) I would regret that in the future, no matter how much more I might like the name [name]Isla[/name]. [name]Elma[/name] [name]Christene[/name] was obviously very important to you and you want to pass on that connection to your daughter. I just know that I would wish I had gone all the way and named her [name]Elma[/name]. If you feel like [name]Isla[/name] honors her strongly enough, then that’s all that really matters. You just have to figure out how you feel.

Would it be weird to have 2 MN with this one when we haven’t done that for our other 2 DDs? This will be our last LO. I kinda like [name]Isla[/name] [name]June[/name] [name]Christene[/name]–last name is like [name]Conrad[/name], but just don’t know if its too much with sisters MaeLee [name]Ann[/name] and [name]Lucy[/name] [name]Rae[/name]. I love the flow of [name]Isla[/name] [name]June[/name] with her sisters…what do you think with [name]Christene[/name] tacked on the end…

DH is willing to go with [name]Elma[/name] just because he knows how important she was to me, but I know [name]Isla[/name] is his favorite and I do really love that name too. I swear if we get this child named it will be a [name]MIRACLE[/name]!

Thanks again soooooo much for the input…I will take as much as I can get at this point!

[name]Alma[/name] is beautiful. [name]Elma[/name] sounds like [name]Elmo[/name] or [name]Elmer[/name] to me. Good luck!
