I recently got bored with my no-nickname name [name_m]Anton[/name_m] and started to introduce myself as “[name_m]Anton[/name_m], but you can call me [name_u]Tony[/name_u]”.
[name_m]How[/name_m] appropriate is that? Some people get confused when they see email from anton@company.com, but guy signs as [name_u]Tony[/name_u].
It kind of depends on where in the world you live. I’m from Norway and we have no tradition for nicknames so I would be very surprised. English speaking countries have long standing traditions for using nicknames, so it wouldn’t be seen as strange for me.
[name_m]Anton[/name_m] is a variant of [name_m]Anthony[/name_m] which is where [name_u]Tony[/name_u] the nickname is from, so it seems perfectly natural for an [name_m]Anton[/name_m] to be nicknamed [name_u]Tony[/name_u] in my opinion.
Thank you for your answer. I currently work and live in UK and it is common practice here - my colleague [name_m]Daniel[/name_m] Chamberlain is referred to as DC often.
I don’t see why that would be a problem. I also know an [name_m]Anthony[/name_m] that goes by Ant, but that may be a little juvenile for an adult Does your middle name, if you have one, have a letter that works well (ex. AJ)?
I would prefer sticking to [name_u]Tony[/name_u] as I have some good associations with this name
No, I don’t have a middle name and i think that introducing myself with initials (ex. AJ) is much weirder than [name_u]Tony[/name_u]. I think middle name introduction is only appropriate in USA.
I think it’s fine. If you can get [name_u]Tony[/name_u] from [name_m]Anthony[/name_m], why not from [name_m]Anton[/name_m]? In fact, I think [name_u]Tony[/name_u] comes more naturally from [name_m]Anton[/name_m], [name_m]Antony[/name_m], and [name_m]Antonio[/name_m].
The rules on nicknames are very subjective. People will get them from initials ([name_u]Dana[/name_u] [name_f]Zoe[/name_f] leads to [name_f]Daisy[/name_f]), from less obvious methods (a [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] can be a [name_f]Daisy[/name_f] too), or from the same sounds within a name (something like [name_f]Adeline[/name_f], who goes by [name_f]Ellie[/name_f]).
So [name_m]Anton[/name_m] called [name_u]Tony[/name_u] makes a lot of sense to me.
Funny, because my great-grandfather’s name was [name_m]Anton[/name_m] and he went by [name_u]Tony[/name_u] exclusively. So I think [name_u]Tony[/name_u] is just a natural nickname here:) And, if that’s the name you really love, use it. It’s not weird. So many people go by nicknames.
Thank you very much for your feedback. I think I just wanted to sense-check it with someone before I will start introducing myself as a [name_u]Tony[/name_u]. Now I will feel myself more confident when introducing myself!
I feel like [name_u]Tony[/name_u] is totally fine for [name_m]Anton[/name_m]. I can understand why the email thing is hard though (I’ve tried to email a “[name_u]Tony[/name_u]” before, only to have to bounce and then realize his name was actually [name_m]Anthony[/name_m] :P) But honestly, for 98% of circumstances and situations, [name_u]Tony[/name_u] is great!
