Bit of a mistitle [name_f][/name_f]- obviously we can. But my wife and I have a friendly disagreement and I’m curious about the berry opinions (especially fellow lesbian and bi/pan berries).
[name_f][/name_f]
We both like the name [name_f]Teagan[/name_f] [name_f]Loveday[/name_f] “Teddy”. But my wife is hesitant to put it too high on our list because, “Lesbians naming their baby [name_f]Teagan[/name_f]? Like [name_f]Tegan[/name_f] and Sara?”
[name_f][/name_f]
I personally feel like it’s not that strong am association [name_f][/name_f]- I don’t think [name_f]Tegan[/name_f] and [name_f]Sara[/name_f] are that well known outside of sapphic circles to begin with, and they’re hardly the top band our future baby would be listening to. If we need our twins [name_f]Tegan[/name_f] and [name_f]Sara[/name_f] then sure, that’d be a lot, but one little [name_f]Teagan[/name_f]? Not even spelled the same?
[name_f][/name_f]
What do you all think? If you met a little [name_f]Teagan[/name_f] with two mommies, would it strike you as odd?
I’m sapphic and have heard of [name_f]Tegan[/name_f] and [name_f]Sara[/name_f], and even reading the title I didn’t see the connection, so I think it’s fine [name_f][/name_f].
(Aroace with two moms here) It wouldn’t strike me as odd at all! [name_m]Even[/name_m] if the baby was[name_f][/name_f] explicitly named for the band, I would probably find it more amusing/interesting than strange; like a “we named our child [name_f]Lennon[/name_f] / [name_m]Hendrix[/name_m] / [name_m]Jagger[/name_m] after our favourite singer” situation, if that makes sense?
[name_f][/name_f]
(Also, just like you, I’m not sure how well known [name_f]Tegan[/name_f] and [name_f]Sara[/name_f] actually are, but probably not ubiquitous enough that you would receive nonstop comments.)
I mean, I have no idea who [name_f]Tegan[/name_f] and [name_f]Sara[/name_f] are [name_f][/name_f] and I’ve never heard them brought up among of my lgbtq+ friend group [name_f][/name_f]- or online circles…(and maybbbee they’re just not a UK thing [name_f][/name_f]- or I don’t talk to enough people) but either way, I think [name_f]Teagan[/name_f] is a familiar enough choice that it doesn’t sound tied to one person [name_f][/name_f]- and with nickname [name_m]Teddy[/name_m] I wouldn’t worry so much either.
I’m Canadian, and I remember listening to [name_f]Tegan[/name_f] and [name_f]Sara[/name_f] as a kid when they first became more famous (I think through the mtv music videos)
[name_f][/name_f]
I honestly don’t think there’s any reason not to use [name_f]Teagan[/name_f] !!
[name_f][/name_f]
It’s not like you’re having twin daughters and wanting to name them [name_f]Tegan[/name_f] and [name_f]Sara[/name_f]. Plus you’re spelling it differently so it’s another level away from the band
[name_f][/name_f]
[name_f]Teagan[/name_f] [name_f]Loveday[/name_f] with the nickname [name_m]Teddy[/name_m] is such an edgy, trendy, cool, gorgeous, overall great name! I love it and I definitely think you guys should use !!
I’m a lesbian and although I have heard of Tegan & Sarah it’s probably been years since then! I don’t think it’s the most relevant association nowadays + Teagan is such a normal name anyway, I highly doubt anyone would think of it even if they were more familiar with them. Reading the title of your post, it didn’t come to mind at all! Worst case scenario you’ll get a light-hearted joke about it by other WLW around your age. Definitely not by your daughter’s peers!
I’m panromantic and asexual and though I understood the association once you said it, I don’t think it’s an issue at all! [name_f]Teagan[/name_f] is a name that is not explicitly tied to one person, so it wouldn’t be like naming your child [name_m]Elvis[/name_m], for example. I highly doubt anyone would assume that you named your daughter after the band, regardless of your sexuality.
Another lesbian here [name_f][/name_f]— I have listened to [name_f]Tegan[/name_f] and [name_f]Sara[/name_f] in the past but only thought of them because of the way you framed your question!
[name_f][/name_f]
The musical references people would connect to queerness these days are probably going to be different [name_f][/name_f]— you’re not naming a child [name_f]Chappell[/name_f], but even that would be fine.
[name_f][/name_f]
Unless you run in very [name_f]Tegan[/name_f] and [name_f]Sara[/name_f] involved circles, I doubt people close to you will think of it, and clearly based on previous responses the wider public will not!
I know two Tɛgᴀn/Teagans and both of them are who I would think of first. Also I wouldn’t jump to Tɛgᴀn and Sara automatically if I were to meet another Tɛgᴀn (with any spelling), despite knowing of the duo for years.
A name is just that… a name… and each individual bearer makes it what they will. If you both love Teagan, go for it… I would just skip Sara as a first name in the future though.
I don’t think it’s a problem. I had not heard of [name_f]Tegan[/name_f] and [name_f]Sara[/name_f] before. Now that i know the reference l still don’t think [name_f]Teagan[/name_f] is unusable
Not a lesbian, but know [name_f]Tegan[/name_f] and [name_f]Sara[/name_f]. They didn’t cross my mind, I would have just thought you liked [name_m]Irish[/name_m] names. Also how have people not heard of them? Has no one seen the LEGO movie?!
another lesbian here! i did get the connection pretty quickly after reading the title but hearing teagan on it’s own i never think of the band and i’m a fan of theirs! just like other posters have said i think because teagan is such an established name in its own right there’s nothing to worry about
pan woman here! your title made me chuckle [name_f][/name_f]I am surprised to see so many people (especially other lgbtq+ people) not know who [name_f]Tegan[/name_f] & [name_f]Sara[/name_f] are!!! I don’t think I’ve ever met a queer woman who didn’t know them
[name_f][/name_f]
Anyway, I obviously made the connection on first read, but[name_f][/name_f] I definitely don’t think it’s an issue! perhaps people would notice the connection, and maybe people you know (if they know T & S) would make a lighthearted joke about it, but I don’t think that makes it unusable in the slightest. I know a lot of people (especially those outside of the community or outside of the targetted age range while they were popular) don’t even know them!
[name_f][/name_f]
This definitely wouldn’t seem odd to me, nor do I think it would to anyone! [name_m]Even[/name_m] if you named her after[name_f][/name_f] the group it wouldn’t be odd, honor names like that are used often!!!
[name_f][/name_f]
Also, just wanted to say, [name_f]Teagan[/name_f] [name_f]Loveday[/name_f] “Teddy” is so unbelievably adorable💗 such a sweet, spunky name with a darling nickname [name_f][/name_f]- I love it!!!
