Can we talk about the names in Fantastic Beasts?

I hope no one has made this thread yet! So, according to the new movie posters here, our characters are:

[name_m]Newt[/name_m] Scamander
Porpentina Goldstein
[name_m]Jacob[/name_m] Kowalski
[name_f]Seraphina[/name_f] Picquery
[name_f]Queenie[/name_f] Goldstein
[name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_u]Lou[/name_u]
Credence
Gnarlak
[name_m]Percival[/name_m] [name_m]Graves[/name_m]

What do we think? Could the movie give any of these names a boost?

[name_f]Seraphina[/name_f] for sure. I love [name_m]Newt[/name_m] and [name_m]Percival[/name_m] too! So excited for the movie

The only one I can see taking off is [name_f]Seraphina[/name_f], though I personally am quite intrigued by Porpentina. Would never use it obviously but it’s quite unique! Makes me think of porpoise though lol

I’m putting my money on [name_f]Seraphina[/name_f] too. [name_m]Newt[/name_m] seems like it will appeal more to the Brits. I would love to see more Percivals too. I wish that it would at least boost [name_u]Percy[/name_u] in the States.

So weird… I know a real life J@cob Kow@lski! I like [name_m]Percival[/name_m] a lot, and [name_f]Seraphina[/name_f] too. Porpentina makes me think of porpoises and porcupines. [name_m]Newt[/name_m] is interesting, but I can’t see it being commonly used in real life.

At first glance the names didn’t appeal to me— I know Fantastic Beasts is set in 1920’s [name_u]America[/name_u], but the names kind of lack that signature “[name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m]”-ish feel to them, if that makes any sense at all. They just don’t sound like character names from a HP book.

That said, I’m happy to see [name_f]Seraphina[/name_f] being used somewhere. The more I think about Credence too, the more I like it.

I thought that too. Although to be fair, I’ve always thought part of what makes the names in [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m] so [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m]-ish is the fact that they’re so eccentric and British. I cannot imagine an American with a name like [name_m]Dedalus[/name_m] Diggle or Bathilda Bagshot. Also, judging from what I’ve seen so far, I get the impression that the American Wizarding world is more “in touch” with the Muggle (No-[name_u]Maj[/name_u]?) world around them. I imagine that would affect the name choices as well, but I might be getting too nerdy and speculative here. :stuck_out_tongue:

I kinda wish she had gone with more American sounding flapper names like [name_f]Zelda[/name_f].

Gah, I hope it doesn’t push [name_f]Seraphina[/name_f] up any! That’s our top contender and it will just get associated with this. Lol. Oh well, I suppose. I don’t really see any of the others becoming more popular from Fantastic Beasts…at least not on my side of the pond. [name_m]Jacob[/name_m] is currently fairly popular here. Maybe Credence could gain some traction?

[name_f]Seraphina[/name_f] is my top choice for a girl andi really, really, really hope it doesn’t get overly popular.

[name_f]Seraphina[/name_f] is my top choice for a girl and I really, really, really hope it doesn’t get overly popular.

Other than that I like Jqcob and [name_m]Newt[/name_m]. I can’t see the other names will be popular because of tgis movie, really.

I never used to be a fan of [name_f]Seraphina[/name_f], but it’s growing on me! I can see that one really taking off. I would also say that [name_m]Percival[/name_m] is likely to get a boost too. [name_f]Queenie[/name_f] is an interesting pick too! I can see [name_f]Queenie[/name_f] gaining some popularity in the UK.

I think the movie will give quite a boost to [name_f]Seraphina[/name_f], but not enough to make it mega-popular overnight. It might put [name_m]Percival[/name_m] and [name_m]Newt[/name_m] (maybe Credence, too) under the radar, catching the eye of people that like surprising but familiar names. Maybe it will also bring a bit of attention to [name_f]Queenie[/name_f]: it fits right in with other “nickname names”, so popular right now.
I’ll have to disagree with others though. I think the names are perflectly [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m]-ish. All names in the saga have these grandious but “funny” feel to them and these have that too- [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m] was the only name I think didn’t really fit in with the rest, but I think that was the point

Id like to add that the character Porpentina will seemingly go by the name [name_f]Tina[/name_f] in the movie, which is short sweet and vintage-sounding. So that, along with [name_f]Seraphina[/name_f] will likely get a boost in popularity.

I only know this because the official funko pop line for the movie has her character labeled [name_f]Tina[/name_f] Goldstein. I guess it’s like a nick-name name?

I wonder if the movies will mention [name_m]Newt[/name_m]'s full first name ([name_m]Newton[/name_m]). I feel like that could gain more traction than [name_m]Newt[/name_m].

I could see Credence taking off as a subtle HP nod, especially in the middle spot.

I think they’re all pretty HP, especially with the addition that [name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_u]Lou[/name_u] and Credence are surnamed “Barebone.” Since 3 of the characters are muggles/no-maj ([name_m]Jacob[/name_m], [name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_u]Lou[/name_u], Credence), and another a goblin (Gnarlack), it makes sense that they wouldn’t have quintessentially Hogwarts-esque names, though.
