Can you travel at 33-34 weeks pregnant?

So, I just got my BFP. I am likely about 3 weeks and calculated my due date for [name_u]August[/name_u] 6th. We’re thrilled! But one concern… which has been on my mind the whole time we’ve been TTCing.

One of my best friends is getting married at the end of [name_u]June[/name_u]. If this is a sticky baby, I’ll be about 33.5 weeks pregnant. I’m supposed to be in her wedding and her wedding is in ARUBA! I would absolutely love to go and be there for her, but I have no idea if that’s a safe time to travel being that far along.

At this point I’m just wondering if it’s even a possibility. If it is, I will likely tell her I can’t be in the wedding, but plan on going as long as things go smoothly and just make sure we book our trip with travel insurance.

But is it even possible or is traveling that pregnant a big no-no?

It depends on the health of your pregnancy. If you have a healthy, low-risk pregnancy which will become more clear as you progress through your first and second trimesters, then usually you can still fly and travel into your third trimester. You will likely be uncomfortable during and after all travel, you’ll likely swell more than usual on long flights, and you’ll have to clear the travel with your doctor or midwife.

My NUMBER ONE concern as a pregnant woman would be Zika, though, not the travel itself. Travel to and from Aruba will be much more high risk than travel to and from a non-affected domestic US city. You should talk to your doctor or midwife once you hit the 10-15 week mark about the travel and your concerns, and then you can make the travel plans (or not) accordingly.

If it were me, I would decline. I’m 34 weeks and 5 days now and personally would not want to travel, so many aches and pains when you get this far along! Sitting on a plane for hours would be killer, especially with swollen feet! We didn’t even go anywhere for Thanksgiving. I spent most of my time chilling on the sofa. [name_m]Just[/name_m] cleaning the house is a workout!

Also it will depend on your pregnancy, so you can plan on going now, but if it turns out you are high risk or have gestational diabetes, your doctor might not let you travel. It’s hard to plan so far in advance since all pregnancies are different and many different things can happen. I would give your friends a heads up though so she can plan ahead in case you can’t make it.

I also believe most airlines have a policy where you can’t travel internationally after 32 weeks, but you can travel within the states up until 36 weeks. So I would check first to see if you can even find a plane that will let you on at that point.

Also as the previous poster mentioned, Zika is a huge problem right now and my doctor advised to not travel south at all. Luckily we live in Minnesota so Zika isn’t a problem up here.

[name_m]Ah[/name_m] yes… Zika. Something I had my mind, but then completely forgot about. Definitely a huge concern for sure.

Yes, all great points! Zika is definitely a concern.

I feel bad and hope she isn’t too disappointed, but will definitely be telling her within the next few weeks.

I did not know that about airlines. That’s definitely a concern and could make things difficult. Things would be so much easier if she was getting married in Chicago (where she lives). But their dream is Aruba! I’m mostly just worried about disappointing her, because I’m 80% sure I probably won’t be able to go if this pregnancy sticks.

congrats on your BFP!!! I think it is dangerous… I know that you can travel with a newborn and there are no risks to it, but isn’t there a restriction for pregnant women?
hm… I was really cautious taking my baby on the plane and flying all over from Ukraine to USA. But i would not do it if I were you
