Can't Decide on Girls Name…Bayla?

Looking for possible girl names as a sister to [name_m]Jonah[/name_m] [name_u]Elias[/name_u].

quick background, she must be named after my father [name_u]Barry[/name_u].

Does not have to be Hebrew/Jewish, but my name is Hebrew ([name_f]Marni[/name_f]) , my DH name is biblical ([name_m]Aaron[/name_m]) and [name_m]Jonah[/name_m] is biblical, so I don’t want her to feel “left out”

I recently discovered the name [name_f]Bayla[/name_f] ([name_f]Baila[/name_f], Beila ext), a yiddish word meaning white, also has some ties to a biblical stores. What do you think? Does it sound to unique in relation to [name_m]Jonah[/name_m]? i just love the nickname [name_u]Bay[/name_u], I think it is so cute.

Any other suggestions?

I love [name_f]Bayla[/name_f], I know a girl with the name! I know multiple girls with your name too, but they spell it [name_f]Marnie[/name_f]

There aren’t too many Hebrew names that start with B. There’s [name_f]Batsheva[/name_f]. Maybe [name_f]Rebecca[/name_f] nn [name_f]Becca[/name_f]? Is [name_u]Barry[/name_u] short for anything?

Or perhaps [name_f]Bethany[/name_f]? That would go really nicely with [name_m]Jonah[/name_m] I think. And it’s subtly biblical.

thank you for the suggestion @isaberry . I think [name_f]Batsheva[/name_f] is too “hebrew” for me. I like the connection [name_f]Bayla[/name_f] has to being Yiddish/Hebrew, but it isn’t as “strong” if that even makes sense. Kind of like [name_f]Marni[/name_f], it is unique (not as much anymore - but still not a top 1000 name), but people don’t know right away that it is Hebrew.
I don’t like [name_f]Rebecca[/name_f], it is just too boring and I know so many [name_f]Rebecca[/name_f]'s!
[name_f]Bethany[/name_f] I think is really pretty, but I hate the nn [name_f]Beth[/name_f], and I feel like it could be inevitable.

[name_u]Barry[/name_u] is not short for anything, and his flu legal name is [name_u]Barry[/name_u] [name_u]Lynn[/name_u]

Hmm…
[name_f]Bayla[/name_f] is an intriguing choice and feels closely related to [name_u]Barry[/name_u]. [name_f]Bayla[/name_f] works nicely with [name_m]Jonah[/name_m].

Other names that could work…
[name_f]Batsheva[/name_f]
[name_m]Bat[/name_m]-[name_f]Ami[/name_f]
[name_f]Batya[/name_f]
Behira
Berura
Bilha
[name_f]Bina[/name_f]
Bracha

: )

[name_f]Bayla[/name_f] is quite cute  I believe Aeropostale (clothing store here) has a style of jeans that are named [name_f]Bayla[/name_f] - so the name could be somewhat familiar for those who shop at the store like I do.

[name_f]My[/name_f] only B suggestion would be [name_f]Betsy[/name_f] or [name_f]Bettina[/name_f] - both variants of [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f].

[name_f]Bayla[/name_f] is nice.
What about using [name_u]Lynn[/name_u] as inspiration? Linit is pretty

I like it! It does go well with [name_m]Jonah[/name_m] and the nn [name_u]Bay[/name_u] is really cute. In case you were still interested in other names, here are some that I found…

[name_f]Babette[/name_f] (Means my God is a vow)
[name_f]Bailee[/name_f]
Baina
[name_f]Barbara[/name_f]
[name_f]Basha[/name_f]
Basira

Yeah, I like [name_f]Bayla[/name_f] better

[name_f]Bayla[/name_f] is pretty but [name_f]Bayla[/name_f] and [name_m]Jonah[/name_m]. I don’t know, they both have the a ending. [name_u]Barry[/name_u] means spear so, other names meaning spear are…
[name_f]Trudy[/name_f]
[name_u]Corin[/name_u]- [name_m]Jonah[/name_m] and [name_u]Corin[/name_u]…
[name_u]Adair[/name_u]- [name_m]Jonah[/name_m] and [name_u]Adair[/name_u]…
[name_f]Gertrude[/name_f]
[name_f]Geraldine[/name_f]
[name_f]Rhonda[/name_f]

[name_u]Corin[/name_u] [name_f]Bayla[/name_f]? [name_m]Jonah[/name_m] [name_u]Elias[/name_u] is a great name!

You could just call her [name_u]Bay[/name_u]. [name_m]How[/name_m] about [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f]? Or [name_f]Bea[/name_f]? I like [name_f]Bayla[/name_f], but it seems like a mix of [name_u]Bailey[/name_u] and [name_f]Kayla[/name_f]. Which could be good, since it will feel familiar… Easy to pronounce, too. I love your son’s name, by the way.

thanks everyone, I really appreciate the input. I told my DH last night, and he only didn’t like it a little bit, which means I could work on him. The problem is he hates Y in the middle, so he would prefer [name_f]Baila[/name_f] i think. I think the thing I am struggling with is that even though it is a “real name” it does sound made up - just like @lightsea pointed out, its feels like a mesh of two already popular names.

I do like just [name_u]Bay[/name_u] - but I am not convinced I can use it on its own just yet, I think I would need to sit on that idea longer.

thanks for the love on [name_m]Jonah[/name_m] [name_u]Elias[/name_u], i [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] his name so much!!

It’s a family name for me. One of my sister’s names (named after an ancestor who died before I met her) and a great-great aunt I really loved and am thinking of naming after myself.

Anyway, I don’t hear it as made up, as you can imagine. I am indecisive about spelling though, because I’ve seen [name_f]Baila[/name_f], [name_f]Bayla[/name_f], and Beila, and I feel like [name_f]Bayla[/name_f] is the simplest to pronounce but also, well, perhaps the trendiest looking. I’m not sure if I’d use it as a legal name or only a religious one.

I’m very fond of [name_f]Blythe[/name_f]. If I wuss out on using [name_f]Bayla[/name_f] as a legal name, I’ll probably use [name_f]Blythe[/name_f] to nod to it.

Other options: [name_f]Briar[/name_f], [name_f]Bryony[/name_f], [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f].

And for Hebrew names I like Bilhah but I just find [name_u]Billie[/name_u] for a girl cute and that’s probably one of the relatively simple ways to [name_u]Billie[/name_u]. [name_f]Sybil[/name_f] would be the other easy option, but not close to [name_u]Barry[/name_u].

Good luck whatever you decide. I was just happy to see [name_f]Bayla[/name_f] on the board, I had to say something.

If you live in an area with a Spanish population, or a population that took Spanish in school, [name_f]Baila[/name_f] would get mispronounced a lot. [name_f]Baila[/name_f] (pronounced like bye-la) means “dances” in Spanish. For example, “[name_f]Ella[/name_f] baila” means “she dances”.

I’m not a fan of [name_f]Bayla[/name_f], especially with [name_m]Jonah[/name_m]. [name_f]Bayla[/name_f] feels so trendy and made up!

I have to be honest and say I’m not crazy about [name_f]Bayla[/name_f]. It feels invented even though it’s not. I do agree that [name_u]Bay[/name_u] is adorable and I’d use it on its own. I love [name_f]Bea[/name_f] or [name_f]Bee[/name_f] too and would use it on its own.

It’s definitely a challenge to come up with a Hebrew name starting with B if you don’t like the [name_f]Beth[/name_f] family! [name_m]How[/name_m] about [name_f]Belle[/name_f]? [name_m]Even[/name_m] though it’s been off the Top 1000 for decades, it is close to [name_f]Isabella[/name_f], [name_f]Isabel[/name_f] etc. so you’ll hear it a lot. But it’s an adorable name.

[name_f]Bara[/name_f] could of course work though I’m not sure it’s an improvement on [name_f]Bayla[/name_f].

i appreciate the suggestions! I think I am going to keep [name_f]Bayla[/name_f] on the short list for now, but I am not sold.

@stripedsocks - I am glad you have heard of the name before, I thought I was one of the only ones. I don’t really like [name_f]Blythe[/name_f] for us though, thank you for the suggestion.

@pam thank you for the suggestion of [name_f]Belle[/name_f]. I just adore [name_f]Belle[/name_f]. I think [name_f]Belle[/name_f] and [name_m]Jonah[/name_m] sound well together too. [name_f]My[/name_f] cousins name is [name_f]Isabella[/name_f] (they call her [name_f]Bella[/name_f]), so I am a little hesitant on using it, but I am not ready to nix it just yet. She lives on the other side of the county, is 16 years old, and I have not seen her in over 5 years…so I am not sure it matters. Either way, it is such a pretty name. I do love [name_u]Bay[/name_u] as well as [name_f]Bea[/name_f] as a stand alone name, so that is a possibility. I don’t mind the short names, (our boy top pick right now is [name_m]Bram[/name_m]).

I appreciate the feedback, it always helps.

I know plenty of girls named [name_f]Baila[/name_f], and the most adorable one is a little 3 year old who is called [name_u]Bailey[/name_u]!

[name_m]Jonah[/name_m] and [name_u]Bailey[/name_u] is perfect, in my opinion.

If you’re still not sold, what about [name_f]Batya[/name_f]? Or Bruriah? You could call her Bru

[name_m]Jonah[/name_m] and [name_u]Bailey[/name_u] ([name_f]Baila[/name_f])
[name_m]Jonah[/name_m] and [name_f]Batya[/name_f] (no nn needed)
[name_m]Jonah[/name_m] and Brue (Bruriah)

[name_m]How[/name_m] about bayley?

[name_f]Baila[/name_f]/Beila is nice, but [name_f]Bayla[/name_f] looks a bit creative.
