I know a lot of people think [name_f]Carrie[/name_f] [name_m]Bradshaw[/name_m] when they hear the name [name_u]Carey[/name_u], but do you think it could work for a boy? It’s a family name and I like the sound of it - it ticks off a lot of my boxes. I just worry that it’s not a name that’s seen as unisex anymore, but strictly feminine.
And what do you think is the most masculine spelling - [name_u]Carey[/name_u] or [name_u]Kerry[/name_u]?
For me [name_f]Carrie[/name_f], [name_u]Carey[/name_u] and [name_u]Kerry[/name_u] are all pronounced differently -I’m in Australia - so I find the idea of them being interchangeable spellings confusing.
I see [name_f]Carrie[/name_f] as definitely female, ie a nickname for [name_f]Caroline[/name_f]. [name_u]Carey[/name_u] or [name_u]Cary[/name_u], while unisex and used more for boys in the past, now seems to be used mostly for girls. I think of [name_u]Carey[/name_u] [name_m]Mulligan[/name_m]. [name_u]Kerry[/name_u] is unisex too, but is again mostly used for girls, and seems quite dated now as well.
Not sure that any of them seem masculine to me, but I’d go with [name_u]Cary[/name_u] (like [name_u]Cary[/name_u] [name_m]Grant[/name_m]) for my best pick.
I pronounce [name_f]Carrie[/name_f], [name_u]Carey[/name_u] and [name_u]Kerry[/name_u] differently as pp says, but I see [name_u]Carey[/name_u] as fairly unisex and usable for girls or boys! I’d stick with the [name_u]Carey[/name_u] spelling or perhaps [name_u]Cary[/name_u]. I really like it as a name too
I pronounce [name_f]Carrie[/name_f], [name_u]Carey[/name_u], and [name_u]Kerry[/name_u] the same and, while the name hasn’t really ever been popular in my generation, I’ve always seen [name_u]Kerry[/name_u] as the male version. That gets my vote then.
For what it’s worth, I think of it as unisex. My [name_m]SIL[/name_m] is a [name_f]Carrie[/name_f]. I know a few male [name_u]Kerry[/name_u]'s and one friend who is giving her son this as a middle name. Other than these connections, I either think of [name_f]Carrie[/name_f] [name_m]Fisher[/name_m], Underwood, the scary movie, or the male serial killer [name_u]Cary[/name_u] Stayner.
This name totally works for a boy. My partners Uncle has the name [name_u]Carey[/name_u].
I also have a cousin with this name, spelt [name_f]Cari[/name_f], however she’s a girl.
I think it really just depends on how you spell it. But when I hear the name I think Unisex.
I would go with the [name_u]Carey[/name_u] spelling (or maybe [name_u]Cary[/name_u] like [name_u]Cary[/name_u] Elwes) [name_f]Carrie[/name_f] & [name_u]Kerry[/name_u] both feel a little more girly.
I think it’s a fine unisex name, but I would spell it [name_u]Carey[/name_u] or [name_u]Cary[/name_u] on the more masculine end. Not sure where you’re located, but if you’re in the US, [name_u]Kerry[/name_u] immediately reminds me of Former Secretary of State [name_m]John[/name_m] [name_u]Kerry[/name_u].
