Caroline alternatives?

I love the name [name_f]Caroline[/name_f], but it’s super popular in my area :frowning: I have it on my list for now, but I’d love to hear what alternatives you would suggest for [name_f]Caroline[/name_f]. (NOT [name_f]Coraline[/name_f], please, that movie creeped me out beyond reason.)

What comes to my mind is:
[name_f]Clementine[/name_f]
[name_f]Madeline[/name_f]
[name_f]Cora[/name_f]
[name_f]Carolina[/name_f] ([name_m]Don[/name_m]'t love this, actually. The second A feels forced.)
[name_f]Adelaide[/name_f] (It has the same pretty three-syllable cadence, with the lovely long vowel at the end)

Thanks, berries
~LL~

I was actually going to suggest [name_f]Carolina[/name_f]–I think she’s lovely! What about:

[name_f]Charlotte[/name_f]/[name_f]Carlotta[/name_f]
[name_f]Emmeline[/name_f] (has a similar ending to [name_f]Caroline[/name_f], and a similar feel to me. Likewise, [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f] ([name_m]LEN[/name_m] ending) and [name_f]Josephine[/name_f]…)
[name_f]Cara[/name_f]
[name_f]Calista[/name_f] (same length and classy feeling, a little uppity like [name_f]Caroline[/name_f]–at least, [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] feels a little uppity thanks to Ms. Bingley to me!–and that sweet nn [name_f]Callie[/name_f])
[name_f]Calla[/name_f]
[name_f]Cecilia[/name_f]/[name_f]Cecily[/name_f]

Good luck!

[name_f]Coraline[/name_f] terrified me as well, and that is coming from someone who’s been reading [name_m]Stephen[/name_m] [name_m]King[/name_m] since age 5. Plus, she spent half the film telling people that no, her name was not [name_f]Caroline[/name_f], which is exactly what would happen in real life.

[name_f]Cecilia[/name_f] and [name_f]Celeste[/name_f]/[name_f]Celestine[/name_f] are soft C’s rather than hard but they have a similar classical unforced elegance feel to me.

[name_f]Christina[/name_f] and [name_f]Catherine[/name_f] have the utter evergreen quality, though [name_f]Christina[/name_f] is a bit of a religious statement and [name_f]Catherine[/name_f] is often mushed to 2 syllables? [name_m]Both[/name_m] are good for not feeling on trend but not needing explaining, similar to the best aspects of [name_f]Caroline[/name_f]. (Sorry to hear its gone popular in your area though!)

[name_f]Gwendolen[/name_f] and [name_f]Gillian[/name_f] have the three syllable but-not-flowery rhythm I like about [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] minus its popularity. [name_f]Lillian[/name_f] has the same rhythm but is maybe too popular?

The “-line” sound ones are natural substitute-wise, I like: [name_f]Jacqueline[/name_f] (but hate [name_u]Jackie[/name_u]), [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f] half the time, [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f], and [name_f]Madeline[/name_f].

After them, the “-eens”: The other half of Emmelines, [name_f]Marceline[/name_f], Racheline, [name_f]Celestine[/name_f], [name_f]Angeline[/name_f], [name_f]Seraphine[/name_f].

Then there’s just names that have a similar “feel” as [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] to me, like [name_f]Susannah[/name_f] and [name_f]Annabel[/name_f], but I can’t explain what the connection is.

[name_f]Carolyn[/name_f] or [name_f]Carrie[/name_f]?

Hmm, the only alternative I thought of before reading the thread was [name_f]Coraline[/name_f], but since that’s off the board, I do like [name_f]Clementine[/name_f], [name_f]Cora[/name_f] and [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f]. [name_m]How[/name_m] do you feel about [name_f]Cara[/name_f]?

I love [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f]! It has the same feel and vintage beauty:)
I think that [name_f]Catherine[/name_f], [name_f]Rosamund[/name_f], [name_f]Helena[/name_f], [name_f]Gwendolyn[/name_f], [name_f]Annabel[/name_f], and [name_f]Ophelia[/name_f] all have similar style to them.

I think if you use [name_f]Carolina[/name_f], you will still have the same problem as it is extremely close to [name_f]Caroline[/name_f]. It would just look as if you wanted to be different from the [name_f]Caroline[/name_f]'s so you switched one letter (which you did). I love the name [name_f]Coraline[/name_f], but your right the movie is creepy! Similar names: [name_f]Cara[/name_f], [name_u]Carmen[/name_u], [name_f]Cora[/name_f], [name_f]Coralie[/name_f], [name_f]Camille[/name_f]/[name_f]Camilla[/name_f], [name_f]Karin[/name_f], [name_f]Korina[/name_f], [name_f]Clara[/name_f], [name_f]Cayley[/name_f], [name_f]Chloe[/name_f], [name_f]Carrie[/name_f], [name_f]Cosette[/name_f], [name_f]Carlene[/name_f], [name_f]Madeline[/name_f], [name_f]Emmeline[/name_f], [name_f]Adeline[/name_f], [name_f]Angeline[/name_f], [name_f]Aveline[/name_f]. Good [name_m]Luck[/name_m]!
