[name_m]Hi[/name_m] everyone! I posted last week in search of a baby name for our third girl. I really appreciate your feedback.
Here is the thing - I adore the name [name_f]Caroline[/name_f]. However, my name is [name_f]Carrie[/name_f] (family usually calls me Care). Would it be too narcissistic to name my daughter [name_f]Caroline[/name_f]? Are they too similar or am I overthinking this?
If we went with [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] we would have: [name_f]Jenna[/name_f], [name_f]Emily[/name_f], and [name_f]Caroline[/name_f]
As long as you don’t start calling her [name_f]Carrie[/name_f] or Care, I don’t think there’s really an issue (although I would avoid [name_f]Cara[/name_f] or [name_u]Caro[/name_u], too). I used to dislike the idea of passing my name down to a future daughter of mine, but after falling for [name_m]Asher[/name_m] for a boy, I don’t really care anymore, haha. I wouldn’t mind giving a similar name to a future child ([name_m]Asher[/name_m], [name_m]Dashiell[/name_m], [name_f]Aislinn[/name_f], etc., or even from my MN, [name_f]Marie[/name_f]–[name_f]Maria[/name_f], [name_f]Mariana[/name_f], [name_f]Mary[/name_f], etc.). If guys get to have juniors, I feel like there should be absolutely no reason why women can’t include part of their name in a daughter’s name, too, especially if they really like the name and it just happens to be similar to their own name.
I think a [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] could get [name_f]Callie[/name_f], [name_f]Lina[/name_f], etc., or just [name_f]Caroline[/name_f], although I think it’d be nice to have a ready nn if someone tried to nickname her [name_f]Carrie[/name_f] or Care, etc.
Have you considered [name_f]Coraline[/name_f]? Maybe just [name_f]Cora[/name_f]? With [name_f]Emily[/name_f] and [name_f]Jenna[/name_f], perhaps;
[name_f]Anna[/name_f]
[name_f]Julia[/name_f] or [name_f]Juliet[/name_f]
[name_f]Lucy[/name_f]
[name_f]Charlotte[/name_f]
[name_f]Madeline[/name_f]
[name_f]Sophie[/name_f]
[name_f]Victoria[/name_f]
[name_f]Gabriella[/name_f]
[name_f]Grace[/name_f]
[name_f]Laura[/name_f]
We intend to call her [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] - but yes, we want a nickname on hand just in case. Definitely not [name_f]Carrie[/name_f] or Care. Would the nickname [name_m]Rolly[/name_m] or Roli be too much of a stretch?
I had a previous student named [name_f]Cora[/name_f] so that name is ruined for me (as are quite a few because I associate them with naughty children).
I think [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] is a bit close but at the same time, I think it would work and especially because you love it so much. Not on the [name_m]Rolly[/name_m] train though. We really have no idea if one day, she may have weight issues and [name_m]Rolly[/name_m] [name_f]Polly[/name_f] is just too easy for teasing potential. Once a person is known by their nn, that is who they are and not easy to have others start calling her something else.
I think they’re really close, but I also wouldn’t think you were narcissistic. I like just plain [name_f]Caroline[/name_f], but you probably do want a nickname up your sleeve in case [name_f]Carrie[/name_f] or Care happens, since they’re the easiest and most logical. [name_f]Caddie[/name_f] and [name_f]Callie[/name_f] are two classic nicknames for [name_f]Caroline[/name_f], if they appeal to you.
My mom is [name_f]Kathleen[/name_f] and my sister is [name_f]Katherine[/name_f] (after my dad’s grandmother, not after my mom at all). My mom through the years has felt a bit bad when people thought she named [name_f]Kate[/name_f] after her, and there have been a few postal mix-ups and whatnot, but nothing too terrible. My sis hasn’t minded, either.
I love the name [name_f]Carrie[/name_f] and the name [name_f]Caroline[/name_f], and [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] does go so well with your other names! If you don’t mind occasional confusion and some people thinking you named her for yourself, I actually find it a really nice connection between the two of you.
Hm, I don’t think it would be that bad, though some people might assume you chose it because it is similar to your own name. It would sound great with your other children’s names. For a nickname, you might consider Liney. My great-grandmother’s name was [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] and some people called her Liney. Have you considered [name_f]Carolina[/name_f] (Care-o-[name_f]LEENA[/name_f])? You could use the nickname [name_f]Lina[/name_f] in that case.
Great point on the teasing with Roly Poly. If we went with [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] and nicknamed her [name_m]Rolly[/name_m] it would be pronounced like [name_f]Polly[/name_f] or [name_f]Lolly[/name_f] but with an R - so more so Raw-lee than [name_m]Roll[/name_m]-ee
I think it’d be awesome to have a [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] after you! What is wrong with that? Men name their boys after themselves so I see nothing wrong with that. And you could use the nn [name_f]Cara[/name_f].
I suppose I worry about [name_f]Carrie[/name_f]/[name_f]Caroline[/name_f] being too close because my [name_f]MIL[/name_f] is [name_f]Laura[/name_f] and named her daughter [name_f]Lauralee[/name_f] (and she IS a narcissist).
So…I guess I am asking is [name_f]Carrie[/name_f]/[name_f]Caroline[/name_f] just as bad as [name_f]Laura[/name_f]/[name_f]Lauralee[/name_f].
[name_f]Carrie[/name_f] and [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] are too close for siblings, but I don’t think they’re too close for mother and daughter. And hey, how many generations of men have been juniors and thirds and fourths, etc., and made it work? I love [name_f]Callie[/name_f] as a nickname - [name_m]Rolly[/name_m] doesn’t seem super intuitive to me and also the RAW-lee pronunciation is quite harsh to me to come from sweet [name_f]Caroline[/name_f].
I agree with oregano7 and was going to say that as well, [name_f]Carrie[/name_f] and [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] would not work for siblings, but for a mother and daughter it would be fine, and I think really sweet. I don’t really have any other nn suggestions although I don’t like the [name_m]Rolly[/name_m] pronounced Raw-lee, mainly because my dh is named [name_u]Raleigh[/name_u] and I think of that as the only way to spell it (but that’s just my opinion).
I am loving the constructive criticism. It is much easier to get honest opinions from strangers. My husband just vetoed the nicknames [name_f]Callie[/name_f] and Liney for nicknames if we go the [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] route and it sounds like [name_m]Rolly[/name_m] is getting a thumbs down. So, if we go for [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] I guess we will have to just correct people who try to give her a nickname?
My sister just suggested [name_f]Adeline[/name_f] which I had not previously considered (it is growing on me). My husband’s top picks are:
We currently have a:
[name_f]Jenna[/name_f] [name_f]Christelle[/name_f] (my grandmother’s and my middle name)
[name_f]Emily[/name_f] [name_f]Joy[/name_f] (my Mom’s and sister’s middle name)
[name_f]Caroline[/name_f] is actually my great grandmother’s name and my husband is drawn to [name_f]Kate[/name_f] because his name starts with a K (and he isn’t getting a boy ).
