[name_m]Hi[/name_m] everyone, we’ve been strongly considering [name_f]Carys[/name_f] as a middle name if our baby is a girl. I have always thought it was pronounced KARE-iss/KEHR-iss, which are basically the same to my ears, or KA-riss, with a short “a” like apple. (To me, these pronunciations are fairly interchangeable… for example, many people where I live say [name_m]Harry[/name_m] like HARE-ee, while many others would say HA-ree, but we recognize them as the same name regardless of the way the individual is prone to saying it. Something similar goes for other -ar names and many -an names like [name_f]Anna[/name_f], [name_m]Manny[/name_m], etc.)
[name_f][/name_f]Lately I have heard that [name_f]Carys[/name_f] is actually pronounced like KAH-riss (kind of like the word “car”) in [name_m]Wales[/name_m]. I’ve also heard that the variant [name_f]Cerys[/name_f] has the KARE-iss/KEHR-iss pronunciation I like. The problem is that I prefer the spelling [name_f]Carys[/name_f] and have loved it for a long time!
[name_f][/name_f]I believe that in the US where I am, the intuitive prononciation of [name_f]Carys[/name_f] would be the one I like. However, it would bother me to use the “wrong” pronunciation if it’s literally never said like that in [name_m]Wales[/name_m]. [name_m]Can[/name_m] anyone confirm these pronunciations for me or let me know if the pronunciation of [name_f]Carys[/name_f] ever varies in [name_m]Wales[/name_m]?
