Casey - boy or girl?

As far as I know the name [name_u]Casey[/name_u] has always been a girls name. I’ve always liked it and known a few girls with it. It only recently occurred to me that [name_u]Casey[/name_u] can be used for a boy as well. It doesn’t sound right as a boy name. What are your opinions? Boy name or girl? Or either for that matter?

I’ve known more males with the name than females so I guess it feels pretty unisex to me.

It’s a surname, so unisex.

It’s a surname so technically it’s unisex. The pattern is usually as follows: surname first, then boys name and finally the name shifts to the girls side. There have been many MALE Caseys (eg. railroad engineer, [name_u]Casey[/name_u] [name_m]Jones[/name_m], DJ [name_u]Casey[/name_u] Kasem, actor [name_u]Casey[/name_u] Affleck etc…). It’s probably more prevalent for girls now than boys (in [name_u]North[/name_u] [name_u]America[/name_u], anyway. It may be the opposite in [name_f]England[/name_f]). I don’t see the appeal of the name myself for either gender. It just sounds so juvenile that it’s a name forever stuck in childhood.

[name_m]Both[/name_m]… I have known females and males with the name almost equally.

[name_u]Casey[/name_u] is unisex. However, I prefer [name_u]Casey[/name_u] for a boy and [name_u]Kacey[/name_u] for a girl. “[name_u]Casey[/name_u] at the [name_m]Bat[/name_m]” (poem from 1888) demonstrates a male [name_u]Casey[/name_u], although it could be a surname. The nn [name_m]Case[/name_m] makes it even more masculine.

Yup, unisex. But I really like it on a boy. Not so much on the girls.
It’s a cute nn tho.

I have a friend [name_f]Cassandra[/name_f] who goes by [name_u]Casey[/name_u]. And I know a little one year old [name_f]Cassia[/name_f] who has [name_u]Casey[/name_u] as a nn.

No, at least in the U.S. according to the SSA stats [name_u]Casey[/name_u] is more common on boys (in 2012 550 boys were given the name vs. 352 girls, and for the past several years it’s also likewise ranked higher for boys).

Sorry but i dont like it on either .
But if i had to choose then i would say girl

I like better as a boy’s name.

I probably wouldn’t use it, cause it seems a little dated. But it’s cute.

I know it’s a surname and surnames are technically unisex but to me, [name_u]Casey[/name_u] is all male. The [name_u]Casey[/name_u] spelling might be more popular for boys but I tend to see more creative spellings for girls, which might actually make it more common for girls ([name_f]Kayci[/name_f], [name_u]Kacy[/name_u], [name_u]Kasey[/name_u], [name_u]Kacey[/name_u], etc.).

The numerous spellings of the name on the girls side tips the scales to the female side.

Boys - US 2012 Stats

[name_u]Casey[/name_u] - No# 486 - 550 boys

Girls - US 2012 Stats

[name_u]Casey[/name_u] - No# 777 - 352 girls
[name_u]Kasey[/name_u] - No# 991 - 255 girls - total 607

I don’t have the stats on other spellings like [name_f]Kacie[/name_f], [name_u]Kacey[/name_u], [name_f]Kaycee[/name_f] etc…so it would be more.

Did some quick looking and probably missed a lot of spellings but here’s a few more, these are for 2012:

[name_f]Kaycie[/name_f] - 42
[name_f]Kayci[/name_f] - 32
[name_f]Kacie[/name_f] - 132
[name_f]Kaci[/name_f] - 126
[name_u]Kacy[/name_u] - 40
[name_u]Kacey[/name_u] - 136
[name_f]Kacee[/name_f] - 26
[name_f]Kaysee[/name_f] - 6
Kayse - 7
[name_f]Kaysi[/name_f] - 9
[name_f]Kaysie[/name_f] - 22

There’s a great list on namenerds that does the top 7000 names with all spellings combined. No link because I’m on my kindle but a quick Google search should yield it.

Gosh, some of these are bad! The sugar-sweet frosting is dropping off them as I speak.

I’ve known boys and girls named [name_u]Casey[/name_u]. I say it’s truly unisex.

I know both, but it seems more masculine to me. I prefer it on a boy.

Unisex, but I prefer it on a boy.

In Australia it’s more popular for boys but the two [name_u]Casey[/name_u]'s I know are girls (though one is [name_u]Kasey[/name_u]) but in an Australian soap opera (a popular one too) there is a male [name_u]Casey[/name_u] so I’d say boy.

[name_u]Casey[/name_u] began its tenure as a given name in the boys camp, but today calls to mind males and females in equal measure.

And as an aside, this name evokes a fantastic song (in which the gender of the titular [name_u]Casey[/name_u] is not specified).
