Cassian

Can anyone confirm the origin of the boys name [name]Cassian[/name]? I’m pronouncing it [name]Cash[/name]-an but I also think [name]Cass[/name]-ee-an is accepted.

I recently saw on another name board someone discussing this as a Welsh boys name and although I had never heard of it I did think that the Welsh origin could be true when pronounced [name]Cash[/name]-an as the similar Osian (OSH-an) is a Welsh boys name. When I google it I find conflicting origins. Some say it’s Irish, some say it’s Welsh, some say it’s both Irish and Welsh meaning Curly haired, but then many say it’s Latin meaning empty or robbed :S Not a nice meaning!

[name]Cassius[/name] is one of our favourite names but I want to use a Welsh first name, so if I could find some trustworthy evidence that [name]Cassian[/name] does have Welsh roots I’d be overjoyed! Maybe someone has an old name book with it in or something?

I know some names have various origins so I’m happy to accept that all the origins are true but I’d just like to make sure the Welsh one is true and thought the berries would know best!

Thanks guys and [name]Merry[/name] [name]Christmas[/name]/Boxing [name]Day[/name]!

[name]Cassian[/name] is an old [name]Roman[/name] family name derived from [name]Cassius[/name] (empty, hollow). I think numerous people confuse [name]Cassian[/name] with [name]Ossian[/name]/[name]Oisin[/name] which I’ve always felt is Irish in origin. Then again so many Celtic names are shared by the Irish, Welsh, Scottish and Cornish that it’s no wonder people get confused. I have read numerous baby name books and [name]Cassian[/name]/[name]Cassius[/name] are Latin/[name]Roman[/name] and [name]Ossian[/name]/[name]Oisin[/name] are Irish.
